Two hours later, the agreed time arrived. Roselyn picks up Ruby in her battered car.
Ruby, who saw Roselyn's arrival, immediately smiled broadly, then invited the girl to enter her house first. Emmy wanted to see what Ruby's new friend looked like.
"So you told your mother about me?" Roselyn was utterly shocked. She thought that Ruby and her mother's relationship was not that close to the point of telling something that she felt was not important at all.
"Of course I tell my mom anything," Ruby replied. "Since Dad left Mom and me here, Mom has been the only parent I've ever had. Since then, she's played a dual role as father, mother, and best friend to me."
Again, Roselyn was touched by Ruby's story.
Before the atmosphere really mellowed again. Ruby invited Roselyn to come in and sit on the sofa while waiting for her mother to finish making Roselyn's drink.
"Why? I just brought you here."
