Chapter 41 - Chapter 41

Cameron opened his eyes as he plopped onto the ground rubbing his ass. He noticed the symbols on his arm disappearing and attempted to use his ability once more. His body reacted to the thought as moisture in the air gathered, and crystallized in his hand.

'It's easier than I thought.' Cameron clutched his hand as it dissipated.

"Thank you for all the help," Cameron announced as he stood up.

"You're welcome." Gabriella smiled.

"Did we bring everything down?" Cameron asked his comrades.

"Most of it. We ditched the food bag, but that's it." Megan clutched her bag tightly.

"Have an extra bag?" Cameron asked Henry.

"There's a duffel in the closet," Henry pointed.

"Could I borrow it?" Cameron walked towards the door.

"I don't mind." He replied.

"You shouldn't be going out yet." Megan scolded.

"There's something I have to do, and nothing will change my mind." Cameron declared.

Cameron opened the closet before walking towards the door. He passed a mirror noting his eyes were still blue, and he placed his shades on before exiting. The interaction was brief, but they noticed the changes.

"Is something wrong?" Kinsey asked.

"He gets like this when it happens," Megan replied.

"What do you mean?" May inquired.

"I think it's a reminder that he's only half-human," Jordan stated.

"We have ways of adjusting it." Megan trailed behind Cameron.

Megan exited the house to see Cameron fading up the mountain.

'Not gonna outrun me that easy.'

Megan dashed after Cameron as the others cleaned up the area. The bloody towels were still present when someone knocked at the door. Henry opened it to see sheriff Tobias and one of his deputies on the porch.

"We need to talk." Tobias stepped in and noticed the clutter along the ground.

Jordan peered out from the kitchen to see a cop, and panic ensued. He leaned against the wall with an uneasy feeling. His mind ran scenarios on getting to the others.

'The windows aren't large enough, and I didn't see a backdoor, but there was another window.'

Before Jordan could move the sheriff stepped forward witnessing the blood. He quickly drew his pistol and turned to see Jordan in the corner. Recognizing him from the wanted poster Tobias raised the gun.

"I need backup at the Henry residence." Tobias' radio went static.

"Go check the car." Tobias nodded at the deputy.

"Give us a minute to explain," Gabriella requested.

"Why are you even here?" Tobias scolded Gabriella.

"You know my work keeps me intuned with our people," Gabriella replied.

"Since when does that include aiding and abetting known felons? Dad would be turning in his grave if he saw this." Tobias turned back towards Jordan.

Jordan's hands were interlocked upon the back of his head to assume the position. Tobias stepped forward putting Jordan in cuffs. Hearing a knock at the door Tobias shouted out.

"Just open the door!"

"Okay," Enki replied.

They all heard an unusual voice as the door pushed open. Walking in was Enki wearing a hoody for discretion and at his side a security detail. He removed the hood as May fainted, and the others just stared in awe. Tobias quickly retrieved his pistol once more as Enki raised his hand.

"Disarm please." Enki requested.

"Yeah right," Tobias replied while dropping the magazine, and clearing the chamber.

'What the fuck?'

"We're here to talk, and nothing more," Enki reassured them.

They all heard the voice, but Enki's mouth never moved a muscle. His security detail stationed themselves by the door as Enki admired the room. Seeing the yellowbelly rifle his eyes widened.

"Can I touch it?" Enki asked.

"Su-sure," Henry replied.

Enki trailed his hands along the weapon with admiration. He picked up the rifle examining its dimensions. Enki shouldered the weapon and tried to fire it, but there was just a click.

'That's right they use ballistic weapons. I think they did this.'

Enki cranked the lever-action before trying again as a bullet went out the window.

"Sorry about that. That's a lot louder than I expected." Enki placed the weapon down.

He retrieved an object from his waist resembling a price scanner. It ran over the wall to analyze the material. In a matter of seconds, the window was as good as new. Enki approached the rifle and scanned it for replication later.

"Why can't we move?" Tobias demanded an answer.

"I can move just fine." Gabriella walked forward to retrieve his keys.

Enki walked toward May on the ground and awoke her. Her eyes were readjusting to the light to see a grey hand before her. Enki could feel her anxiety about meeting his gaze still.

'I warned them our forms would be forgotten.'

"I didn't mean to startle you. I hope this helps going forward." Enki apologized.

Enki's hand slowly resembled a human in May's eyes. The others still saw the grey-skinned man towering over them in the kitchen. May grabbed his hand and noticed it was soft and warm like a human's.

"We are more alike than you think." Enki guided May's hand to his heart.

"I'm okay now," May reassured Enki.

Enki nodded as his form was revealed once more. The eyes took a moment for May to adjust to, but she returned to her seat. Enki began grabbing food from nearby countertops and testing them. Those that interested him were promptly scanned to share with the crew later.

"You said we needed to talk." Jordan felt his wrists relieved to be free.

"Sorry we don't typically get to make contact like this, and it's easy to get distracted." Enki returned the sleeve of Oreo's to the counter.

"I thought you took people all the time," Jordan stated.

"We study new lifeforms, and you were discovered long before the flood." Enki checked on his drones.

Enki relayed the images to the present company. In front of them was a detailed image of the agents chasing in the opposite direction. Next was the roadblocks dissipating, and traffic returning to normal.

"We have a team running interference right now to give you time to rest. There will be more details on the operation tomorrow. Please tell your friend to answer when I call." Enki announced.

'Operation?'

"Why didn't you contact him, to begin with?" Gabriella asked.

"He's strong enough to block us out. Before I go is this one gonna be a problem?" Enki gestured at Tobias.

"You gonna hit him with the flashy thing?" Jordan asked.

"The what? Oh, I've seen that movie. I wish your organization on Earth was that friendly. If you want him to forget that's easy." Enki gestured at the door.

Tobias' expression went blank as he grabbed his keys, and returned to his vehicle. He drove back to the station with a passed-out deputy in the passenger seat. Reaching his office his senses returned, and he imagined the follow-up report going without an issue.
