When Charles left the diner, the room felt like it brightened up as though the sun came out after a long stormy day.
Elaine wiped any traces of food in the corner of her mouth with a napkin. Why did she for one second believe Charles would act properly and not cause a scene? She shouldn't have gone upstairs to bring him down before they started dinner. They should've just started without him.
His presence wouldn't have been missed. It wasn't missed now.
"I'm sorry for how this night turned out Helen. This is not how I planned for the first dinner to turn out. Next time I will meet you both without Charles. Maybe Eli can host the dinner in the home he never invited me to," Elaine suggested throwing a jab at Eli for not taking his own mother to see his home.
