About 20 minutes later the doctor and nurse were back. The nurse was glaring at Alexia hard while the doctor moved over next to Anna, on the opposite side of the bed as the chair that Alexia was occupying once more.
"Your jaw is broken. We are going to give you some medication to make it so you don't feel when I reset the bone, however your going to have to have a special brace for a few weeks while the bones heal. The brace will help you not move your jaw too much while the bone mends. But before we do all of that, I need to ask you some questions. Are you ok with your mom stepping out for a little bit while we chat?"
Alexia's jaw dropped "do you really think I would EVER hurt my daughter?!?" Anna tried not to shudder as her mother's voice rose in both pitch and octave. Meanwhile the Dr and nurse both stood fast, neither showing any shock at the outburst.
"It's standard procedure ma'am. Especially in cases presenting such as your daughters." Came out of the nurse. Anna looked towards her mom, nodded slightly, and tried to hide the fear she was feeling for her mother's sake.
After Alexia was escorted out by the nurse, the doctor met the young lady's eyes. "Did someone in your home hit you?" Anna nodded as tears started falling once more. "Was it one of your parents?" Anna shook her head hard, regretting almost immediately the movement as her jaw throbbed. "A sibling?" Anna just stared this time, unsure what would happen. The doctor let out a long sigh before speaking again. "I understand you don't want more trouble, especially if the person abusing you is going to retaliate for you telling, but we can't help you if you don't tell us what is going on. Was it a sibling?" Anna nodded slowly, her fear once more showing on her face. The doctor nodded to himself as he turned to step back out of the little room. He returned within a few moments, the nurse and her mother behind him.
Alexia saw that her daughter was trembling and sweating, and rushed over to her, holding the girl once more. Doctor and nurse talked in whispers for a few minutes before the nurse started speaking while the doctor again left the room. "Mrs. Chavez it is your duty as a parent to keep your children safe. You have failed to do so. In this instance we do have to report to Family Services due to the fact that your daughter has admitted to being abused by a sibling in your home. I am making you aware of this as a courtesy. They will follow up with you at their earliest convenience. "
Dr. Davis returned with a syringe, a weird looking package, and a bottle with some pills and a handwritten label. "Once I give you this shot, you won't remember anything beyond me counting backwards from 10. Next thing you know, you'll be on the way home." Anna nodded and looked at her mom pointedly, then back to the doctor. "Yes, your mother is staying with us until you leave". Anna nodded slightly and sat back against the tilted head of the bed. The doctor gave her the shot in her arm and started counting. "10. 9. 8. 7." Then everything went black.
