Chapter 37 - A Hail of Lead

Luke fired back at the cops while Andrew reloaded his gun. Faust on the other hand was baby sitting Leo and Avery Junior. Leo was rapidly shaking of the mental exhaustion and returning to his normal state.

They slowly moved up the street to reach better cover without a proper plan to get out of the situation.

Luke and Andrew didn't know the city well enough to come up with a plan to escape. Meanwhile, Faust was only confident on getting away in a car without an army of men with guns surrounding them. That left them with Leo who was still loopy from getting his head hit in the car.

Currently they were trying to reach a building that didn't have that many windows and seemingly only one entrance at the front. If they could get inside, they'd be in a pretty defensible position. At the moment, they were approximately three-fourths of the way to the building and were moving ever closer. One more sprint and they'd most likely make it to the building.

They stopped at another cop car and took refuge from the gunfire. But it wasn't for long.

A flood of lead ripped through the air absolutely shredding the police car that Doe squad was getting cover from. Hundreds of rounds had been shot in less than a minute as the men from the black vans walked forward with their guns drawn.

"What the fuck!" Andrew said as he lowered himself as much as possible, as did the rest of Doe squad.

The rounds kept flying towards them, the group of men alternating in their firing in small squads. Whenever a squad, which was the men in a single car, ran out of ammo in their magazine, a different squad that was previously assigned would take over shooting. This allowed them to shoot nonstop as they advanced towards Doe squad with unimaginable suppressing fire.

The cops obviously took notice of the men and without knowing who they were, began firing upon them. Even if the men were firing upon Doe squad and only them, they didn't have any legal grounds to do so. Especially not in such a public space.

Once the police began firing at them, they gunned down the officer's responsible with frightening speeds. The police fell to the ground and the Myer's Munition hit squad only sustained two injuries. Medics wearing white and red body armor appeared from the back and dragged the two men away while treating them. Their efficiency was astounding to all that saw it.

The police didn't know what to do in a situation like this. They were completely outgunned and outmanned. Even their tactics and skills were obviously far above theirs. So, they did all that they could do.

"Bring the goddamn SWAT now!" A cop yelled into their radio with sweat trailing down his forehead.

"They're currently responding to the same scene as the MCF. You're all on your own for now."

The cop looked at their radio in anger for a moment, "Now means now goddammit! We're under automatic rifle fire at the corner of 43rd and 44th, we need backup assistance now! NOW, GODDAMMIT, NOW!"

"The SWAT teams are suffering heavy losses. There isn't enough manpower for them, even after sending multiple teams over."

"Shit!" The cop yelled as they hit their hand against their car.

Once the police stopped shooting at them to take cover, the hit squad shifted their complete attention back to Doe squad. As they hid their bodies from the bullets that were tearing apart their cover, Leo finally woke up all the way and started speaking coherently.

"Uh… so, what's happening?" Leo asked from his prone position.

Andrew looked at him with joy, "Fuckin' finally! Help us get out of this pickle, you know this city more than the rest of us!"

Leo blinked a bit, "…okay. But you didn't tell me what was happening."

"There's an army of police and an army of those Myer's security people."

Leo opened his mouth, only to close it after a brief pause. Then he opened it again, before closing it once more.

Finally, he asked, "How many is an 'army?'"

"Uh, Faust, Luke, how many do you think."

"I'd say combined, around a hundred." Luke answered quickly.

Leo laughed deeply, "Oh, okay, we're screwed is what you mean."

They went silent.

"Look, a hundred people shooting at us is a bit much. Unless a miracle happens, then we aren't getting out of this."

"Then call over the proctors!" Faust said.

"Nah, they don't want us to die and if they think the situation is out of our control, they'll save us without deducting points. Meaning, as long as we wait for them, a miracle will arrive. A hundred people shooting us is probably enough for them to take action."

"Yeah, but then we'll have a hundred people shooting us! Call the proctor!"

"Look, they're probably on their way over, if we call them now, we'll fail our test."

Faust groaned in annoyance.

The police finally coordinated themselves to get everyone prepared to fire at the hit squad. They all lined up behind their cop cars with their weapons drawn. They fired their ammunition at the hit squad nonstop.

The hit squad turned and stopped firing at Doe squad and shot at the officers. The slowly moved into cover and hid themselves as they returned fire. The officers were ripped apart much like their cars.

At the same time, Doe squad decided to move towards the building.

As they got up and began running, they failed to realize that one man in particular was watching them through the scope of their gun. In between his breathing, he fired a single shot from behind his men. The bullet traveled through the air before piercing Faust in the abdomen.

Faust fell down during the run and brought Junior down with him. Immediately a large amount of blood escaped his mouth and landed on the ground. Leo and Luke instantly noticed this as they were behind Faust. Leo grabbed Junior quickly while Luke grabbed Faust.

Andrew made it to the building and shot the glass door apart before jumping inside. Once he landed, he looked out the building and saw the now injured Faust.

"Shit!" He muttered as he scanned for the shooter. Eventually his eyes landed on a man at the back of the hit squad. He was aiming towards them still. Andrew's eyes widened and he quickly raised his gun and aimed at him.

But before Andrew could do anything, Edward fired another shot at Leo to make him drop Junior. The shot flew across the battlefield but instead grazed Luke's stomach as he happened to get in between them. Luke stumbled slightly but kept running with Faust.

Andrew fired his gun at Edward, and it struck Edward in the left shoulder. Edward instantly dropped into cover and began changing his position. As he shifted his position, he sent a lot of mana to his shoulder, and it started regenerating at a pace visible to the eye. At the same time, Andrew watched for him, scanning across the hoods of the cop cars.

The rest of Doe squad and Junior made it into the building. Edward lifted himself from a random car and Andrew instantly shifted his aim at him. The two fired their guns and the bullets ripped through the air.

A slight spark appeared in the air between the two as the bullets collided with each other and melted into one mass. The new merged bullet fell to the ground and the two went back into cover and changed their positions.

Luke and Leo instantly started treating Faust's wounds to the best of their abilities. Luckily the military academy wasn't a slouch when it came to teaching them about treating wounds. Unfortunately, they didn't have much in terms of medical supplies. Leo gave Luke the job of helping Faust as he ran into the building looking for a first aid kit.

Edward peeked again from another car, and so did Andrew from one of the building's few windows. The quickly found each other and shot. Edward's shot grazed Andrew's neck. It started bleeding slightly but Andrew didn't even react to it.

At the same time that Edward shot, Andrew fired a round and it hit the cop car's hood. It dug deep into it and came out the other side, but it missed Edward.

The two quickly changed their positions again.

While the two were having their gunfight, the hit squad was massacring the police. Nearly every cop that revealed themselves was shot. For every member of the hit squad injured, at least six cops were. But as time went on, more cops arrived at the scene.

Eventually a set of two SWAT vans arrived at the scene. They pulled over to the side and some men quickly started filing out. One of the hit squad members stood up in one of the nearby buildings. They were a few floors up and their partner smashed the window apart. In the man's arms was a large object and it was aimed directly at the SWAT vans.

In his hands was an RPG, he aimed it at the vehicles and waited for his partner to tell him his backblast was clear. Once he received that, he let the missile fly through the air down towards the vehicle. It struck it's target perfectly and blew up the truck, sending shrapnel flying all over the streets.

At the same time on another floor, the same thing was happening. Immediately after the first truck exploded, another missile flew through the air. It then blew up the other van.

A slightly wounded man arrived at the end of the street. He looked towards the chaos unfolding in front of him with a sigh. They began walking forward while flexing their fingers slightly. They swiped their hand across the battlefield and small explosions rang out on the hit squad's side.

One of Leo's proctors had arrived.

Arlo.
