"Mahakali commands you to sit." The deep voice drifted in again. Surya immediately plopped onto the floor, with his legs crossed and hands resting on his knees.
"Our mother, Goddess Kali, bears no light." The Guild master's voice continued. "But she sees the darkness. She sees the creatures that lurk in the shadows and whisper into the night. The dead speak to her. The spirits sing to her." His voice became soft and tender. "And she sings to me. Can you hear it, child? Can you hear her song? Oh, what is it, mother? What do you say?" He paused for a moment. "Yes, mother. Child, mother asks why a son of the light holds a shadow inside him? Why does darkness lurk within the heart of gold?"
If Surya could answer, he would. But words that did not form in his mind could not pass his lips.
"ANSWER HER!" The voice barked that gave Surya a sudden start.
