Anna looked at the man and smiled. "Thank you, but there is no need for that."
The man waited for a long time before giving up. Anna turned back to Ladislas and heard keys jingling, the door of the apartment building slamming, and then nothing but a heavy sigh and silence.
"There are still good humans out there," Ladislas said after a while when Anna didn't speak.
Anna felt the weight of his eyes on her. His eyes were purple but the word didn't begin to adequately describe the color of his eyes. Even in the dark, and a couple of feet away, Anna could tell the exact shade. There was something otherworldly about it that she couldn't find a simile to. His eyes were paralyzing, intimidating, and yet, at the same time, mesmerizing.
