We came over to the girl who yelled.
"What's the problem?", asked Jenny.
"Jefferson is gone!", she said.
"Who is Jefferson?"
She looked at me with disgust, like she saw me eat dog crap and liked it. "The boy you punched in the face."
Oh... that kid.
"Well why did he leave? Did he just go to the bathroom or something?", asked Jenny.
"He left because of him", pointed her index finger at me, shaking with anger and hate.
I did not know how to react to that, so I just stood there dumb founded about the whole thing.
"What do you mean it was his fault that he left?" Jenny asked.
"Jefferson didn't want to be around someone who punched him in the fac-."
"He tried to kill me! I break through the ceiling, and you're mad that I punched him the face for calling Jenny stupid?". She stood there unable to answer, with her mouth gaping wide open.
"I'm sorry it's just... I am his sister and I do not want anything bad to happen to him. You know?". She looked at me with sorrow and sympathy, and I understood why she was so upset with me. She is trying to look out for her family. I felt bad so I accepted her apology and told her I will find him myself.
"What will you do if you don't?" she asked.
"You have to trust that I will."
"Okay".
I walked away grabbing my bat and started to head out of the auditorium. As I was walking, I heard footsteps behind me, I turned around and saw Jenny with a hammer in her hand. I looked at her with a worried face, but before I could say anything, she shushed me and said, "I can take care of myself; you don't need to worry about me".
"Are you sure you want to come along?" I asked her.
"Do you want to go and do it, even after today?", she remarked.
"Touché", I said with a grin. "Well, we better get going".
"Yeah".
As we walked down the halls, we were careful not to cause any noise, so we did not attract... unwanted attention. Everything was dark and cold at first, but our vision adjusted, and we could see every little detail. There was glass everywhere, from the door being smashed in by the "infected" as we called them now.
Other than a cough or two, there was nothing here that could kill us in any way, shape, or form. Complete and total quiet was unsettling to the point we stopped every few feet to listen to the quiet.
"Where do you think he is", asked Jenny, "because this place is deserted. It's also huge, we'll never be able to find him in the dark", she pointed out.
I thought for a moment considering the situation. The odds of finding him were slim, there is nowhere else to go, and there were infected all over the place. "I don't know how we are going to do this, no matter what we can't split up. Understand?"
"Definitely."
"Good, let's continue our search."
As we continued to walk down the hallway, we kept noticing there was paint all over the floor. I knelt and touched the substance. It was strangely warm, and it did not have a paint smell to it. Processing what was in my hand I heard a rattle of a doorknob.
"D-did you hear that?", asked Jenny.
"Yeah, I did. Stay behind me, if anything goes wrong run back to the auditorium, and tell everyone to keep quiet. Understand?" She only nodded, and that was all that I needed to know. I approached the door with a bat in one hand, and the other hand outstretched for the doorknob. I grabbed the doorknob and started to open the door. When the doorknob started to move the banging stopped. Jenny and I looked at each other. She nodded for me to open the door.
At least she not running away.
I opened the door and there was Slade in the room holding Jefferson by the shirt. In confusion, I walked towards them both in a fast pace. "What is going on here?", I yelled in a whisper.
"This one was trying to lure one of the infected in here. You're welcome." We looked at Jefferson in shock. Jenny was the first to react. She walked up to him and slapped him across the face.
"What the heck is wrong with you? We were looking for you because your sister was worried, and you wanted to get us all killed! You're just as bad as the infected." Jefferson looked down, he had nothing to say about his actions. Quietly we all walked back to the auditorium.
The night went on cold and damp.
