Chereads / How To Summon A Monster Girl / Chapter 20 - Among The Brave

Chapter 20 - Among The Brave

Dale stood on his brown stained porch. A cold beer in hand made his fingers almost ache. He couldn't see the blue ocean, but he knew it was a few miles ahead. In the far distance, flashing missiles shot up into the sky like bottle rockets. Leaving streaks of smoke behined them. It must've been some kind of act of pride from the Navy. At least Dale assumed so. Considering the missiles clearly wouldn't reach space to hit the aliens. Then Dale looked up at the alien's ship. The ship itself was still charging, collecting energy. Orbs of glowing yellow light accumulated in front of it. They looked like massive glowing bubbles being collected into one giant bubble of light. A flock of birds flew between him and the sight of the ship. Dale felt uneasy, again he wondered if a bird would be free. Perhapes the aliens would ignore those flying ducks. Chimes hung by his door and they played their random tune as the wind blew.

"Why won't they just leave us alone?" Stella's voice broke the silence.

Dale looked back and saw Stella standing by the door. Dale slowly moved his head up and down, then he took a deep breath.

"It's like telling a kid why he picks a fight with his brother. You can be smart as Hell, but that doesn't mean you're wise. It doesn't mean you know best." Dale said.

He remembered the cruel torture they did to him. Then he compared that idea to animal experiments. Dale laughed and looked at Stella. She looked back with a confused look.

"Maybe they've got aliens that stand for us. Like hippies. Vegan aliens and all." Dale chuckled more. Stella thought about it.

"I mean, maybe they do. Maybe we deserve this, like karma." Stella said.

"I wouldn't go that far..we were made for that genie God. We have a reason to survive. As long as that genie has absolute power. This is what it means to be alive. Shes the one that gave us justification, and thats good enough for me." Dale said.

"Well genie worshipper. I hope you're right." Stella said.

"Dear father in heaven. Please show us your favor and mercy, oh lord. Please have mercy just like you spared Job. Just like you spared Noah." The pastor fell on his kneese, his hands shook mildly. The congregation kept on praying. They had a large T.V set up with the live news. A red emergency warning flashed under the reporter. It read-evactuation of these states, Arkenfel, Eastern Texas, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Kansas, Missouri, Indiana, Arkansas, and Louisiana.

"This will be the largest evacuation ever seen in U.S history. We're seeing booked hotels all across the country. Now I'm handing it over to Alan on site with the FEMA officer." The reporter finished and the scene showed an on scene reporter. He stood before a hotel and a man wearing a blue vest.

"This is Alan, so right. For those of you unable to find a place to book. FEMA has confirmed temporary tents set up accross the states. Isn't that right Mr, Web?" The reporter said as he handed his mic to the man.

"Thats right. We're expecting the alien ship to fire a particle beam. The damage is calculated to be more or less like that of a perfect tornado. If you're afraid, then good. I hope you all evacuate safely. We don't expect radiation, but we do expect total distruction." The man said as he looked at the camera.

"So tell us. Is Zilla the cause of all this? Before now, the kaiju would just land. Giving us a fighting chance. Did the loss of the two black robots have anything to do with this…umm, roach bomb tactic?" Alan said.

"We can't confirm or deny it, but I personally don't believe in coincidences. I do firmly believe this is punishment for biting back." Mr. Web said.

"And last question. Is Zilla going to wipe this mess? Will she help us again?" Alan asked.

"I don't think she can. She is going to try though. May God help us all." Mr. Web said.

Martha sat near the back of the church. She was an old lady with fluffy white hair. She was a deacon for the church and she had been for nine years now.

"Why don't we evacuate like they asked." She said.

"You mean what they said on the news? We've all got our reasons..financial suicide is the most common one. If you lack encome, you're as good as dead a lot of the time." Old man Pete said.

"Money is the root of all evil I guess." Martha looked down at her bible.

"Thats not how that verse goes. It says the love of money is, not money itself. I've seen poor people do the most evil.." Pete said as he stared forward. As if in some kind of trance.

Martha stayed silent.

The doors flew open with a loud thud. Three men wearing bandanas and sunglasses walked stepped into the church. They each had heavy black pistols, aiming them straight up at the ceiling.

"Don't move! Unless you wanna die tonight."

——

The plan was simple. Plan A- Use Zilla's armor ability to stop the blow. Or they could initiate plan B and run away. Dale stood at the harbor. The military stood by to back them up. Zilla was there too and it made Dale feel sick. Was this a stupid plan? He thought.

"You know, you don't have to be here. You can go with Jill down West." Dale said.

Senko's tail jerked to the right.

"No, I have my block spell. I can block one shot. Maybe…" She paused.

"We talked about this. That cannon might be multiple strands or..or even a rapid fire. Like a machine gun. Your shield might not even work." Dale said.

"But Lilly's isn't any better.." Senko said.

Dale noticed a soldier walking towards them.

"I think you're still treating me like a child..I was a soldier. I owned my own properties.." Senko looked hurt. Dale didn't know what to say. On one hand he wanted to tell her she looked like a kid. No, she was a kid. It didn't matter how old she claimed to be. Dale couldn't drop his case, but he knew he hurt her feelings. Dale looked at the ground.

"Hey, you need to eat and I have to see it." The soldier said.

"O.K.." Dale said.

The sound of multiple engines began to roar nearby. Probibly light tanks and army trucks, but why?

"Whats going on?" Dale asked. He looked up expecting to see alien ships flying around or maybe a kaiju. There was nothing alien around.

"Since the city is evacuated. Organized criminals are taking advantage. Hell, it might just be thugs." The soldier said.

"And they're taking care of it?" Dale asked.

"More of a warning shot, but you are our top priority. Those soldiers going out there are volunteers." He said.

Dale looked over and saw Zilla standing in the water. Sparks flashed around her from soldiers welding devices to her armor.

"I gotta go then. Theres no way I'm letting people get hurt. Senko, you back Zilla if her shields break." Dale said.

Senko's face lit up in surprise.

"R-really?"

"Yeah, Might as well try. You said you were a soldier. I trust you can lead Zilla." Dale said.

"I'm sorry, but I can't let you leave." The soldier swung his assault rifle over and aimed it at Dales chest.

"You can let me go. I'm no hero. These two here are the ones who can stop it. I can't do crap." Dale held his arms up.

"Understood. They stay, you can go." The soldier said.
