Chapter 4 - The One Day Bet (4)

"My innermost feelings I never showed to anyone and yet... I showed you. Why? Why did it have to be you I surrender and lose to? I fought a battle that could not be won." —Siyeon

"Hey, wait up!" he shouted, I sighed turning around.

"What do you want?" I asked hoping to get rid of him as soon as possible.

"Coffee." he said, making me raise my eyebrow at him.

"I'm sorry, what?"

"Let me buy you some, since I spilled the first." he suggested to my surprise. I mean if he wants to buy me coffee I don't see anything wrong with that. He did crash into me so its only fair and who am I to refuse free coffee.

I thought for a minute before responding, "I guess, I'm okay with that."

"Great, let's go!" he said interlacing his fingers with mine, pulling me along with him, almost making me fall over my feet. For a brief moment, I thought the feeling of his warm hand on mine was a feeling I could get used to; maybe it was because of the autumn chill which caused my hands to become cold and his hands were the only source of warmth they had all day, but I enjoyed it.

The sound of my phone ringing brought me back to reality as I stopped walking and untangled our hands abruptly, surprising him. I took my phone from my pocket and answered, "Yes mom... no you don't need to pick me up... then leave, I'm hanging out with a friend for a while... no I'm— mom please just go. Okay, I'll be home in a bit don't worry, love you too, bye."

As I hung up I heard the sound of snickering behind me. "What are you laughing at?"

"Sounds like your mother really worries about you." he said, now smirking at me.

"It's not like that, I don't really 'hang out' with my friends that much anymore so she was just surprised and... why am I explaining myself to you?" I began walking ahead of him in annoyance.

"Wait up! You don't even know where we're going, why is she always leaving me behind?" he mumbled catching up to me. "My car is over there the Red SUV."

"Huh, nice car." I commented in a surprised voice when his car came into view.

"What's with the exaggeration in your voice?" he questioned, giving me a look.

"It's nothing." I simply replied opening the door to the front seat and getting in, he sighed tilting his head to the side in annoyance before he did the same.

We drove in awkward silence for a while before he cleared his throat. "So, I'm your friend now." He mischievously referred to my earlier conversation with my mother.

"Don't get caught up. I said that to avoid my mother asking questions, if I said I was with a boy she'd ask a lot of ridiculous questions which I'd rather not answer."

"What kind of questions?" He focused on the road but occasionally glanced at me.

"I can't tell if you're playing dumb or if you're being serious." I said turning my head to look at him and he did the same as we stopped at a red light.

"I am serious."

His response made me roll my eyes. "Forget it, I'm done talking to you." I folded my arms looking out the window, as we returned to silence.

The cafe we went to wasn't that far away from the school so we arrived rather quickly. As I got out of the car I got a message from the girls wondering where I was.

Siyeon

Joey, Sua, Seol

Alright.

I sighed and rolled my eyes and placed the phone into my pocket with a slight smile. I sensed someone was staring at me, so I turned around to see Baekhyun looking at me rather strangely.

"What?"

"I just haven't seen you smile like that since we met."

"We've literally only known each other for an hour."  I said as we entered the cafe and he held the door open for me.

"I know, it's pretty, really pretty." He followed behind me, I stopped walking to look at him.

It hadn't been that long since someone told me that, guys hit on me all the time and I usually ignored them but why is it that my heart just skipped a beat when he said it?

"What will you be having?" he asked, bringing me out of my thoughts.

"A latte." I replied and he nodded going to place our order.

As I waited for him to return I found a nice seat by the window so I could look outside, I then scrolled through my phone for a while.

"Well, well, well, what do we have here?" A voice that sent a shiver down my spine; a voice that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up upon hearing it, chuckled.

I slowly lifted my head up taking my time, letting my eyes start from his shoes and go up, as I silently prayed he wasn't who I feared he was.

When our eyes met my heartbeat sped, my eyes widened, everything he did to me started flashing briefly before me. My breathing was hitched, I felt as though I could pass out, but I wasn't going to let him see that or my fear.

"You." I was barely able to say before my hands started shaking, and it wasn't because of the cold.

He looked at my shaking hands and smirked causing me to place them into my pockets, he then stepped closer. "Don't come any closer!" I shouted standing to my feet backing away from him.

He smiled with arrogance. "Or what? You're going to taddle on me? Your friends aren't here to protect you this time, you seemed to have forgotten but," he paused coming closer, towering above me. "you're mine." he finished, his eyes not leaving mine as he said those words.

"You crazy bastard." I spat with hatred, he scuffed at my words before reaching his hand out and grabbing my wrist. "Let me go!" I said to him, my voice not betraying me, sounding as firm and unafraid as I wanted it to be.

"But I don't want to." he refused, instead he tightened his grip to the point where it began to hurt me.

"Hey! She told you to let her go!"  Baekhyun's voice sounded as he grabbed his hand and dragged it off of mine, he then stood in front of me, so that he came between us; he held my hand, giving me a reassuring smile before looking back at Sin-jae.

"Who do you think you are?!" Sin-jae asked in annoyance and anger looking down at Baekhyun.

"I'm her boyfriend." Baekhyun replied suddenly, making me look at him like he was insane. "And I don't like the way you were touching her." My heart sunk when he said those words, and it wasn't because I was touched, it was more like because I was worried for his safety. He then interlaced our fingers which Sin-jae saw. I couldn't tell if he was trying to help me or make things worst by provoking him.

Sin-jae grabbed Baekhyun by the jacket-collar, raised his fist and was about to punch him.

"Punch me if you want, but I wouldn't if I were you, not with all these people watching." Baekhyun pointed at the on lookers, who had their cellphones out, recording us and whispering to each other.

Sin-jae looked around before mumbling, "You're not even worth it." Then he stormed out of the cafe.

I released a shaky breath of relief, I then kneeled down, closing my eyes to calm myself down, slowly breathing in and out with my hand on my chest.

"Are you okay?"  he asked me and I nodded.

"Are you crazy?! What if he had actually hit you?! Why did you even get involved?!" I started questioning him for the reckless thing he did.

"I didn't think that far ahead." he said with an awkward laugh making me sigh. "And I got involved because it looked like you needed it."

He was right I did need it and I was beyond grateful that he intervened.

"Can we go somewhere else? I don't think I can stay here after that." I asked him and he nodded, bringing our coffee with him as we left the cafe.

We came to a park instead, sitting on a bench that over looked a pond.

"Here." Baekhyun said, handing me my drink and I thanked him taking a sip letting it warm me up a little as I enjoyed the scenery. "If you don't mind me asking, who exactly was that jerk?"

I looked at him and wondered for a moment about whether or not I should tell him, we did just meet but... he did save me so... I guess I can trust him enough to tell him. I took a deep breath in preparing myself for the scars I was about to reopen.

"It's a long story so bear with me... we used to date. Sin-jae was my close friend up until two years ago. I thought my feelings for him were one-sided but it turned out that he felt the same way; when we began dating at first everything was fine, it was everything I wanted but with time Sin-jae changed. He became obsessive and aggressive, he started keeping tabs on me, he'd literally have people follow me around, if I was with other guys who were my friends or anything, he'd get upset, I remember one time he fought with some of them and when I defended them he... he slapped me.

"When those things started happening I knew something was wrong, so I told my friends about everything and they tried their best to help me avoid him by making up excuses for me. After I finally broke up with him, he broke into my house and tried to make me stay with him, saying things like: 'I'm sorry, it'll never happen again, I promise'  When he saw I wasn't buying any of it, that son of a b*tch knocked me out with a glass bottle... and tried to kidnap me."  I tried my best not to cry but to no avail, as tears began to stream down my cheeks.

"I was lucky he didn't get a chance to do anything because my parents came home just then. But you know the worst part is? He didn't get arrested even though the evidence was clear just because his family was rich; they sent him away and I thought that would be the last time I saw him, guess not. He's the reason I can't easily trust anyone, he was such a good friend to me I just... I never imagined that he was a two-faced bastard.

"That person... he ruined my life."  I finished, wiping my face but the tears just kept on coming, Baekhyun took my face in his palms and wiped my tears away pulling me into his arms; I buried my face into his chest as he patted my head, running his fingers through my hair gently and lovingly.

"Shhh it's okay, don't cry, I'm sorry I asked okay? I was wrong, so don't cry." he murmured and I looked up at him with my tear-stained face.

"But why... are you crying too?" I asked in confusion seeing his tears as well.

"I'm not crying." he denied turning his face away from me, and I smiled as I lifted my hand up and wiped his face just like he did for me.

He was actually crying for me.

'I guess you really are a good person.'

"Cute." I whispered and hopefully he didn't hear me.

"I mean who wouldn't cry after hearing something like that and then, the look on your face was so heartbreaking, I just couldn't take it." he rambled, trying to defend himself.

"Alright, alright." I laughed a bit finally letting him go. "Thanks for comforting me." I said patting his head and he stares at me for a long moment before clearing his throat.

"What's with this gloomy mood all of a sudden." he said jumping to his feet suddenly. "That's it, let's go." He pulled me up, interlaced our fingers and began running taking me with him.

"Yah! Where are you taking me?!"

"You'll see soon." he replied with a laugh.
