Maria did not know what to do after Arthur had left her alone in her massive room. She opened the chest of drawers, looked inside the desk drawers, and opened the vanity cabinet, but of course everything was empty.
She walked over to the windows and saw that her room overlooked a lake. Swans rested on the water with their heads tucked into their bodies, and monarch butterflies flew around.
Not knowing what else to do, she took her sandals off and sprawled across her bed.
"I'll just close my eyes for a moment," she said to no one in particular since she was alone.
Maria hadn't meant to fall asleep, but the sound of people rustling about in her room woke her.
"What is she wearing?" she heard a female voice ask mockingly.
She didn't dare open her eyes as she wanted to hear what else they might say.
"It looks like a nightgown. I hear the women from Greece are scandalous, so no wonder she attracted a man like Prince Arthur. Crazy always finds crazy," the other said.
