Elina was surprised by my answer, as I could see that from her facial expression alone.
"Really? I thought you're going to become an adventurer... You're on level 60 after all so I doubt taking the adventurer exam wouldn't be difficult at all."
One of the words that piqued my interest was the adventurer exam that Elina just mentioned. As I always think that becoming an adventurer would be just filling some important paperwork and then you already become an official adventurer just like that.
To think that there's an exam... This is somewhat new to me as I absolutely had no idea about it.
"There's an exam? Why would there be an exam? They don't want people to become adventurers that easily?"
"Well that's because they wanted to make sure you're strong enough to be one, as in the past there's a lot of people died on doing quest because they're low-level and thought that defeating bigger monster would make them level up quicker... but with that sort of thinking, most of them had died in the process."
"I see but why would the adventurer guild care about their death? There's still a lot of adventurers that could take up the quest..." I paused for a bit. "Besides, it's not like the adventurer guild would be troubled by that matter. I doubt that the family members of the deceased would want some compensation as surely they know that adventurers are all about risk."
"The only reason why the guild cared was because of undead issues," Elina said.
"Undead issues, what do you mean by that and why would the guild be concerned about that at all?"
"It's because there's a lot of necromancers around these parts of the kingdom... mostly they're the ones that requested the quest and know for sure that the new adventurer would take up the quest. So when the new adventurer arrives at the destination, they would be ambushed by the necromancer and get killed."
"Okay, I somewhat understand that as the dead adventurer would then be turned into an undead by the necromancer... but still I don't see why the guild was concerned about this."
"To be honest with you, Yei. The guild doesn't really care at first about the situation..." Elina paused for a bit, "But as time goes by, the effect of turning a blind eye about that matter soon would be their worst mistake... as one of the villages in the east had been destroyed by an undead army recently..."
Elina continues to give me an explanation about the situation, I listen to it very carefully as it might be a piece of the necessary information that I needed to know.
After the destruction of the village, the nearby town lords realized that the situation was caused by the guilds. So the lords held a meeting and discussed it with the guild master. The discussion ended with all parties agreeing that to reduce the death toll, the adventurer guild was required to hold an exam for the ones that wanted to be an adventurer.
Of course, there's another condition, that is if there's a report of a dead adventurer. The adventurer guild was required to collect the corpse and cremated it so that the necromancer wouldn't be able to use it as their undead soldiers.
...
Thanks to Elina, I finally understand why the adventurer guild was somehow related to the undead issues. Also, the reason why there's an adventurer guild exam in the first place.
But there's still one thing that I need to know about, that was-
"Elina, what sort of things do people need to do to pass the exam?"
"I'm not sure as I heard the exam would be different each time... but one thing I could be sure of was it would involve some combat." Elina paused as she gave me that kind of look, "Why do you ask Yei? Are you interested in becoming an adventurer?"
"No... I am still with my original idea. I'm just curious about how the exam will go... that's all."
After that, there's silence between us as there's nothing much to talk about right now. Maybe because we had run out of things to talk about... Well it was expected as-
Elina then asked me something, "Are you really sure that you wanted to open a shop?"
She asked that as she seems a bit worried about my decision on that matter.
"Is opening a shop a bad idea?"
"Probably not as it needs a lot of money for you to be able to rent out one of the buildings... like a ton of them."
"So how were the other people able to open their shop then?"
"About that... most of them are wealthy merchants and the rest of them probably took out a loan."
"I see, so what's the problem then? I would just do the same then... take some loan. I'm sure that what I am going to do will be a huge success and in no time, I will be able to finish paying all of the loans." I said that with confidence.
"If you really want to do this, may I ask something then?" Elina said that.
"Sure." I nodded.
"Do you have citizenship yet?"
"Citizenship? No... I don't have that."
"Just like I thought..." Elina paused for a while as she looked straight at me. "I fear that you can't take out a loan or do anything legal like opening a shop here unless you have citizenship."
"What!?" I said as that surprised me...
The heck? I need that in most of the anime or light novels that I have read. Mostly there's no citizenship at all to do something like that... But when I think about it, not all of the MC intends to open a shop as they're busy trying to defeat the demon lord or forces of evil.
"I know it might be shocking but you do need that, a citizenship needed to open a shop and take a loan," Elina repeats herself yet again.
