Chapter 6 - Ch 6: Setting Off?

"Right, the defenses are up and running," Spiro says verbally checking her list.

"The hydrogen tanks are full and I've easily got 7 months of power running on full draw and probably 2 years if I use it sparingly. Then I'm gonna need to come back here for a refill." Spiro says checking her backpack as there's a clang as a hatch falls from the roof.

"... Well as long as the defense turrets still work it doesn't matter," Spiro says

"I've got emergency rations in case I find any humanoid companions. Along with a full campground set up to not seem out of place." Spiro says as she looks at the door that leads to the outside. It's partially jammed open at an odd angle showing how broken it is.

"The largest group of nanomachines is about 22 miles east of here," Spiro says slinging her pack over her shoulder as she walks out.

"Now, we wait till sundown," Spiro says sitting in the shade.

Getting a top of the tall dune near the downed spacecraft; Spiro can see a cloud of sand being thrown upcoming in her direction, the sun setting behind her.

"The radar didn't pick up a sandstorm," Spiro says as it draws closer she can confirm it is indeed not a sandstorm because she sees what appears to be horses running towards her.

"More scavengers? Looks like they brought the Calvary." Spiro says as she gets in a martial arts stance running through multiple simulations in her head.

As the horses draw closer to her they come to a stop.

"Hello?" Spiro says as she throws back the hood on her grey cloak.

"Hi, may I ask what you are doing out here?" A man wearing polished steel armor says taking note of her stance along with her hair color and clothes.

'Thank Yume they speak English.' Spiro thinks.

"Trying to get to civilization," Spiro says

"Hmm, that's a complicated word for a peasant to know, Could we get your name? We would also like to ask if you've seen our companions?" The man in the armor says taking off his helmet before using the nanomachines in the air to project a picture of the two people that were killed by the defense systems.

"There were footprints leading into there, but I get this bad feeling whenever I approach it," Spiro says pointing at her ship, happy she was already hiding her tracks in the sand.

"... Right, now, your name miss?" Ornum says defensively.

"Spiro. My name is Spiro." Spiro says

"No last name? Because I can guarantee that normal people aren't able to pass through the Sea of Sand without getting sick." Ornum says certain she is a noble from some other country.

Spiro shakes her head no.

"Right, well... How about you accompany us?" Ornum says after thinking for a second which puzzles the other knights and adventures before looking at the ship.

"Well, it's a ruin and a new one at that. If you adventures wanna take a crack at it, give it a go. Let us know if you find Sir Charles or James." Ornum says as there are a few cheers as the knights set up camp.

'At least I disposed of the bodies and repaired the defense system.' Spiro thinks as gunshots ring out in the distance killing the first few adventures that attempted to get aboard the ship.

"Yeah, I have no clue how the first two got in." Spiro says aloud watching the adventures drag back their injured colleagues.

Ornum Sighs before looking a little depressed.

'Not my fault they trespassed.' Spiro thinks knowing the defense system activating is what saved her, it's likely that if they didn't show up and die, she would have eroded to time.

"Right, well. I believe camping here for the night and leaving in the morning is a good idea." Ornum says

"So what's your name old man?" Spiro asks sitting down near the fire pit as the sunsets in the distance.

One of the other knights dressed in light armor used the nanomachines to make a fireball lighting the fire.

'That's a wasteful way to use them. Their energy should replenish eventually though.'

"Old!?" Ornum shouts in shock.

"Young?" Spiro says looking at him.

"I'm 35!" Ornum says

"Right and I'm 4 thousand." Spiro says jokingly even though it could very well be true.

"Ornum Torkish" He says sitting down by the fire next to the girl.

"It's a bit hard to pronounce isn't it?" Spiro says

"Coming from the girl named Spiro." Ornum says biting back a laugh.

"It's not that hard, it's similar to a nondescript purple dragon," Spiro says

"What?" Ornum asks.

"Ah of course it would be lost on you," Spiro mutters

"So, anyway. What are you doing all the way out here?" Ornum asks

"Traveling," Spiro says

"Traveling?" Ornum asks

"Yep, traveling," Spiro says

"Where from?" Ornum says

"That way." Spiro says pointing in a random direction.

"Right well, I need to go talk to some people about a few things with the ruins over there and get you a tent." Ornum says knowing the way she pointed to is the direction to the center of the Sea of Sand.

"I've got a tent," Spiro says pulling out the packed away tent out of her pack showing that it's larger than the bag itself.

Ornum looks at the girl then the bag.

"I shall be back," Ornum says as he walks over to the knights setting up camp.

"Duke Ornum sir." A mage says looking at the girl that's staring into the fire.

"I know, she is able to travel through the Sea of Sands and isn't sick. On top of that, there is also her bag which is likely a relic that belongs to a noble family." Ornum says looking over at the girl.

"A runaway?" The mage says coming from a Viscount family himself.

"It's possible, though if she's from a kingdom from across the sea of sand, it's not like they can track her through it," Ornum says

"That makes sense, Your Grace." The mage says

"I don't have a successor and the other nobles won't leave me alone about marrying their daughters… " Ornum says

'If she is a runaway I could probably adopt her. She is obviously of noble blood that should get the damn leeches of my back. Not to mention she's obviously strong, I don't think even I could make it across the Sea of Sands without catching the sickness. I could tell from the way she reacted to a threat of danger immediately that she is experienced at the art of survival..' Ornum thinks,

'Also, this would be a very convenient way to get those damned nobles off of my back about all that heir nonsense. Now how to go about breaking this idea to her' Ornum thinks

Meanwhile.

'How can my tracking systems not find the drive tower.' Spiro thinks to herself, shocked that the ship couldn't find any trace of her memory drive on the planet.

'Well I could just let that knight lea... was he just called your grace? I can only match that to an archbishop or a duke.' Spiro thinks looking at him wearing the armor.

"How about we get out of this damn heat!" Ornum shouts to his men.

'Definitely not an archbishop.' Spiro thinks as she starts running through calculations in her head and trying to see if there is anything in orbit that could be used to help her search for her memories.
