Chapter 9 - Ch 11: Capital.

"Those are some big walls." Spiro says looking out the window of the carriage at the 10 meter tall walls

"There was a point in time where they were needed." Ornum says with a chuckle

"So the capital is a fortress city?" Spiro asks

"Yes though there is a large farming area to the south that sustains it." Ornum says

"We are using the noble entrance aren't we?" Spiro asks as the carriage skips the line.

"Yep, we have to talk with my brother." Ornum says as they get ushered through by the guards.

'This is crazy. The time periods don't match that of earth at all.' Spiro thinks seeing how the city architecture matches late 17th century early 18th.

"Those are street lamps?" Spiro asks surprised to see them

'1790s gas street lamps, introduced in London England of Earth. The designs look identical to those.' Spiro thinks

"Yes, those are street lamps. They are powers by runes. Creating light with magic they light up the street when it goes dark. It's really reduces crime at night." Ornum says

"I'm surprised you know what they are called. A researcher at the academy invented them last year. We only started putting them up 4 months ago." Ornum says

'Have spies already sent word to other countries.' Ornum thinks to himself.

'The road is curved so the water runs off of it. It's construction seems to be a mix of concrete and stone slabs. Guess they haven't found a way to reinforce concrete or they would be making buildings out of it already.' Spiro thinks comparing it to earths history it seems like the method to produce concrete wasn't lost and rediscovered.

The 4 story wood and stone town houses that line the streets could easily become skyscrapers.

The knights suddenly stop escorting the carriage and break off to do their own thing.

"Father?" Spiro says

"We are going to see my brother and will meet back up with the knights at the mansion." Ornum says

"What about the contract?" Spiro asks seemingly worried. Not because she is worried, but because she's still playing the part of a runaway.

"Most of them have been following me for at the very least a decade, I trust them. This shouldn't take too long." Ornum says

"Yes father." Spiro says as they eventually arrive at the carriage entrance and get out at the front of the palace.

"Do you have any shoes?" Ornum asks Spiro realizing she hasn't been wearing shoes this whole time.

"Ah, Yes, give me a second." Spiro says having forgotten she made shoes originally. As she starts digging into her bag pulling very fancy red laces sandals putting them on with ease.

"Come now Spiro." Ornum says as he heads up the stairs.

Spiro first takes a look around just to get the view.

The castle seemed to be made out of large red bricks more comparable to cinderblocks than chimney bricks. Surrounded by a 3 meter high metal fence with smoothly cut grass. In between the fence and the wall.

"Spiro." Ornum calls from atop the stone stairs.

"Sorry father." Spiro shouts running up the stairs her grey cloak flowing behind her.

"It's fine, I sometimes forget how nice the view is here." Ornum says as a the door is opened for them by a guard who is watching Spiro curiously.

As they walk down the halls Spiro sees a maid that had cat ears.

'Cat girls, there are several different races she could be but, this world seems to be mostly made up of human.' Spiro thinks

'A DNA sample would solve this question.' Spiro thinks to herself.

Ornum chuckles to himself seeing Spiro's curious stare.

"They are part of the Demi human race. A lot of kingdoms that listen to the arcane church see them as less than human and actively hunt them and sell them into slavery." Ornum says waiting for Spiro's reply.

"That's horrible." Spiro says

"My personal theory is that their ancestors did a ritual with magic to merge parts of their bodies with animals to revive a physical boost." Ornum says happy with Spiro's answer.

'Modifying DNA... that's dangerous especially for those who have no clue what dna is' Spiro thinks somewhat dumbfounded.
