Chapter 35 - The Regent

The old soldier froze for a second, then he had to put his hand other his mouth so he did not burst out laughing. Then seconds later we could hear yelling come from the house.

"Boy, where do you think you are taking them?!" Looking back, I saw the by taking his mother and what looked like his two sisters out of the house. The man was right behind him, yelling his mouth off, though I noticed that now he wasn't grabbing the boy at least.

My words seemed to have sunk in a bit at least.

The boy then turned around and looked straight at the man.

"I am taking them to a new home which is better for them, they will be coming with me!" His words were so confident that they made me smile. Then the man still dumbfounded at what the boy had said, carried on standing there with his mouth agape as the whole group left.

Elsewhere Pavitra was now stuck in a meeting with a representative from the crown. He apparently had heard what had happened and had been sent by the king to take control of the region and govern it until a noble could be appointed to rule properly.

She was furious as one might expect but more to the point she did not know, how the crown had found out at this point. She had still yet to send word of what had happened. Yet, all of the documents were correct and even the seal was correct. It was just amazing that he had arrived so quickly.

She did some quick calculations in her head and soon found that it was impossible for him to arrive here from the capital that quickly. Looking down at the skinny man, she carried on thinking to herself.

"Where were you when you got this?" The skinny man looked around uncomfortably for a second. Seeing this Pavitra knew she had finally asked the right question. The man then looked up at her, his eyes wavering a little bit.

"I was with the people following you…" Hearing what he said, Pavitra froze. Then her face became very quickly dark. He was following her the whole time? Why?]

"How and more importantly who sent you to follow me?" Her words were icy and cold.

The man began to shake a little, as he felt the room get colder who that is what he thought anyway. The room itself did not though, it was just her voice causing him to feel really uneasy, after all, he did not know that much himself.

"I...The King summoned and had me follow you! He suspected something was going on here as the reports were always the same. I was meant to take over and rule it for him once you had dealt with the Lord if you well did." He almost spewed out all of the information as he struggled to get it all out in a breath.

As she heard who had sent him and why Pavitra leant back into the throne. Her mind was muddled. Why would her father do this? He had basically used her or at least that is what it felt like.

More importantly of all, as she thought of her father, this was not something he seemed like he would do. Not now at least, she could remember the rumours of the past where he apparently had been assassinated and other hidden deeds but she assumed they were false. Though there was also the matter with her mother…

Ignoring the odd and weird suspicions that she was currently having, she then looked down at the man who was going to be the regent for a while. "So how will you rule this city?" She for at least had no intention of just giving up the power she held here currently.

She had planned on making this city her main connection to the rest of the kingdom and wanted it to be fully under her control. But now, it seemed like it was going to be much harder to make that happen.

The man slowly looked around. "I plan on restoring the city and its economy. Drawing people back here and making it more wealthy again. That's all my task as regent is really." The man seemed like he had a firm idea of what he wanted to do and yet as she heard him, Pavira could not help but frown more.

His words mean that she would not be able to control him like she wanted, even if she was the reason for money to come through the city, it seemed like he would still not help her. And if the regent helped the local soldiers as well she would more or less lose the control she had over them once the deal for support was over.

"What about me? Will you give me benefits if I help with the economy?" She asked this carefully as if not to come off, as she was trying to bribe him or sound corrupt.

The man looked at her for a few minutes, he was clearly thinking of what to say or do. His face changed from a frown to a smile, then to a frown before finally ending at a face that was filled with thoughtfulness.

"I can not help you. Though I will not take office until tomorrow. So my advice is, use the time well." The man then bowed and walked away. He had not asked to be dismissed, but Pavitra ignored it for the time being.

Her mind was racing on what she could do and what would have to be done for her to sort everything out.

Then as she looked up she realised one thing. That she would need in this city for some control. That was land.

Looking up, she suddenly yelled out. "Get me someone, who can help me buy land!"

She heard the running of boots on the floor and not ten minutes a later man came in panting. He seemed to be someone from the city hall, though she had no idea who.

"Your majesty," the man said as he panted. "You wish to buy land?"

He slowly caught his breath. He seemed to have run the whole way here which surprised Pavitra a great deal.

"I want to buy all of the lands in the outer city that I can. Talk to my financial adviser about it, to sort out the details." The poor official looked up in shock.

"Yes, your highness." After saying that he slowly walked away still in shock at the amount of land Pavitra wanted.
