Chapter 31 - 2.22

President Wayne Wright was frowning. He had just read a report that showed his son, William, had lied to him. The report showed William's search history from the past week, and nothing indicated William had searched for a list of civilians. His story about how he got to know that civilian woman was an outright lie.

The president just couldn't find a reason why his son would lie about something like that. Of course, he knew William lied. It was something he encouraged in his son. One couldn't be a good ruler if one didn't know how to lie or manipulate. But he had never considered his son would lie to him, especially since William knew his father could check his every move. Where the heck did William find that woman Karin Kelly or something? And why did he give her a special guest suite? Wayne's mind was going crazy trying to find some answers.

Just when he had put the report in a drawer reserved for things regarding his son, someone knocked on the door.

"Mister president, Olivia Ortiz is here to see you," the doorman announced.

Wayne immediately cleared his head. This was one of the spies he had send to keep an eye on that woman William had some sort of infatuation with.

"Let her in."

The woman that came in was absolutely unremarkable. She wore a maid costume, just like almost every other female civilian in the palace, and had a subjugated look.

"Speak," the president said curtly.

"Reporting. Kailey King left at around 10 am towards the garden with the head butler Mason Mason who was ordered to do so by young master Wright. While in the garden butler Mason cornered miss King, they got into some sort of an argument, and then miss King started screaming he is a criminal."

Wayne Wright had listened with only half an ear until the word criminal fell. He jerked his head up and stared intensely at Olivia. "Repeat that last part."

"Miss King started screaming butler Mason is a criminal."

The president clenched his fists. He didn't want to believe the words he was hearing. Head butler Mason couldn't be a criminal. He couldn't be a genetic abnormality. Criminals didn't exist anymore. He made sure all the possible law and rule breakers were eliminated by birth. It wasn't possible for one to fall through the net. And even if it was possible, head butler Mason couldn't be one of them. All his personnel was thoroughly vetted, and the position for something as important as head butler only went to civilians who got a personal recommendation from someone who themselves had an important position. It was impossible for a criminal to survive his regime.

But even if it was virtually impossible, Wayne Wright wasn't stupid. Mistakes, and exceptions could always happen. He couldn't just ignore this piece of news.

"Go on with your report."

"Normally we would've intervened, but since your orders said…"

Wayne right interrupted Olivia. "Don't tell me things I know. Don't tell me what you didn't do. Tell me what happened next."

Olivia cleared her throat and went on with her report. "After Kailey King started screaming butler Mason knocked her unconscious and brought her to his room. After about an hour and a half Mason went out to see a palace guard named Jessica Johnson. She gave him a package after which he returned to his room. While he went out we made sure to place a camera and microphone in the room. After miss King woke up butler Mason used a glasslike device on her that made her stop screaming. The conversation that followed confirmed butler Mason is a genetic anomaly, but the conversation didn't last long before the two… started getting more intimate and stopped exchanging words."

The president impatiently drummed his fingers on the table. "I don't need to know the unimportant details."

"I think you do, mister president, because right when things were getting more heated between the two young master Wright entered the room, appearing very upset, wet and half naked, and flung himself between miss Kailey and butler Mason."

Wayne Wright blinked a few times. His son did what? His son entered the servant quarters? Not even dressed to protect himself from the lowliness of civilian life? The more the president heard the less he understood.

"Young master Wright successfully removed the two people, and it seemed he has known for a long time that head butler Mason is a genetic abnormality."

The president abruptly stood up from his chair, and slammed his hands on the table. "What?! Show me the footage!"

Olivia was startled with the presidents sudden outburst, but she could have expected it when announcing news such as this. She immediately got her bearings together and showed the footage to the president.

Wayne Wright shook his head upon confirming himself the words that came out of his son's mouth. What was he thinking? If William knew the head butler was a criminal why hadn't he told him? What was going on in that tiny mind of William? And had this something to do with why he had brought that woman with to the palace?

"Is there anything else I need to know?" the president asked Olivia.

"They went to young master Wright's room and stayed there for quite a while. Ambiguous sounds could be heard. Head butler Mason brought Kailey King back to her room, after which he left to resume his duties. Young master Wright is currently still in his room, presumably with two of our staff who seemed to have stayed in his room after he had left in a hurry to go to miss Kailey and butler Mason."

"You didn't catch what was being said in William's room?"

"No, mister president. We didn't have the time to install camera's or microphone's."

"Useless," the president said angrily. How come his servants were so incompetent? Didn't they notice they were in a crisis? A criminal! In the palace! More than one! Maybe an entire organization. An organization who has already developed a technology that seems to counteract the hypnotization and indoctrination program! This was simply a disaster. He needed competent people around him! But who could he trust when even his son seemed to be plotting with the genetic anomalies? The son he had been spoiling since birth.

"I need you to escort those two servants here when they leave William's room. I need to know what was said."

"Of course, mister president. What about head butler Mason and Kailey King? Do we need to bring them in for interrogation?"

Wayne shook his head. "No, let them continue on as usual, but make sure to put a tail on them. Especially head butler Mason. I want to know every move he makes, and every word he utters."

"As you wish, mister president."

"Good. You can leave now."

After Olivia Ortiz had left, the president let his head fall into his hands. Shit! This was so not a good time for discovering a complot against the presidency. In six days all the world leaders would be here for the ball. President Wayne Wright couldn't let them show weakness. He couldn't let them show he was being plotted against.

He needed to get to the bottom of this. The faster the better.
