Chapter 17 - 2.8

Mason was tired after the day he had. Not only was he crazy busy with preparations for the ball next week, he also had to welcome home that lazy, spoiled and arrogant little elite. If that was just it, it would be fine, but William Wright also brought home that woman, Kailey King. Instead of doing the tasks he needed to do, he had to bring miss King to her overly fancy room. Why couldn't William just order someone else to do it? He didn't have any consideration at all for people's job descriptions! Since when was it a head butlers task to bring guests from room to room? He had better things to do.

Anyway, Kailey King was a mystery. After she had hurt her nose by walking into the wall, she hadn't stopped asking Mason dubious questions about William. 'What do you feel about William?' 'How well do you guys get along?' 'Do you find him handsome?' and so on. Mason really couldn't understand why she asked those trick questions. He could only answer diplomatically, by seeing that he just saw William as his generous boss that he admired and hadn't really paid attention to how he looks. She looked very disappointed with his answers. Seriously, what did miss King expect him to answer? That he hated William, wanted all the elites to go to hell and that no devil could ever look handsome to him? He wasn't stupid! But her constant interrogation made him sweat bullocks. If he gave even one answer that indicated his true thoughts, he would probably be doomed. Mason had to find out what her motives were.

Mason closed the door to his tiny room in the servants quarters and took a cellphone from his hiding spot underneath his mattress. This was the cellphone with which he contacted The Criminals. It wasn't the best hiding spot, but since criminality wasn't something that the elites were worried about because, they didn't really check servants rooms. The elites greatly underestimated the amount of people that weren't under their control, thinking they detected and killed most of them during childhood – which was true – and there was no possibility of the very few people that escaped their grasps to ever organize themselves. This greatly helped the organization in giving Mason his undercover position.

Mason sat down on the small one person bed and hesitated to call. Normally, he only calls once a week to give his reports, but he needed extra information on Kailey King immediately. Her appearance in the presidential palace was just too out of the blue.

Without thinking twice he dialed the only number on the phone. After only a few rings, the leader's voice came through the speaker. "Speak," he said curtly.

"It's Mason."

"This is not the arranged time. What's wrong?" Darian Davis asked, a frown could be heard through his words. This was not anything like Mason. He knew it was too risky to call outside of the appointed times, so it must be urgent. It couldn't be that his true identity was discovered, could it?

"The president's son brought a suspicious woman home." Mason was suddenly worried that this wasn't enough reason to call the chief of police outside of his weekly reports.

"What makes you say that?" Hearing Mason's reason he was a bit unpleased. Surely, reporting a suspicious person could wait a few days? But Darian was a patient person, who trusted Mason to do his job. Mason may be a rookie, but he was devoted to their cause and a good worker, which means that if he called it had to be serious. Mason's instincts were pretty reliable, otherwise Darian wouldn't have put him in this undercover mission. So Darian didn't show his displeasure immediately, not wanting to miss something potentially important and endangering his undercover agent.

"Well, William Wright never brings home anybody in the first place, and he normally looks down on everybody, but then he suddenly brings home a normal civilian? That doesn't feel right."

"I get where you're coming from, but can't it be that he is simply attracted to this woman? Maybe he brought her home as a pet. That wouldn't be so unusual." The more the leader of the Criminals heard the more he thought that Mason was making a big deal out of nothing, but now that they were on the phone there was no helping it. He'd better be thorough in questioning Mason.

"I doubt it. William let her stay in one of the guest rooms. If he considered her a pet, he would either put her in a servants room or in his own room so he can play with her. Besides, she isn't pretty enough for the elites standards."

"Okay, is there any other reason you find her suspicious?" Darian was sure there had to be more, because he couldn't believe Mason would call him just for this. Maybe he had really underestimated him? There were plenty of reasons for somebody to bring a woman home, even if she wasn't considered beautiful by normal standards. Everybody's taste differs.

"Yes, she kept asking me questions about how I feel about William, what I think about him, if we talk a lot, and more. It was like she was trying to make me say something bad about him, as if she knew I wasn't under hypnotization and indoctrination."

This put Darian Davis under high alert. Why had he doubted Mason? Of course, the person he picked to infiltrate the presidential palace didn't call for nothing! "Did she ask anything else?"

"No, the only questions she asked were about the president's son."

"Do you think she is a spy, or maybe one of us?"

"I don't know. If she were a spy, I don't think they would give her so much preferential treatment. And the chances of her being like us, are extremely small. While she was asking me these questions she walked into a wall. I think it might have been a punishment for something. She could've easily avoided it otherwise."

"That's interesting. Maybe she was thinking badly about the presidential family?"

"Maybe. It would be great if we could get an ally that is closer to William than I am, but I don't know anything about her."

"What is her name? I can look up some of her basic information." Darian was still at work, and his computer was right in front of him. He could easily search any persons information.

"Kailey King."

"Alright." The chief of police typed in the name. "It says here she is twenty five years old, never turned herself or anybody else in for something and works for the identity registration department. Two days ago she got married with a certain Liam Lee, but I see here that just yesterday they got a divorce under the command of the presidential palace."

Hearing that miss King was married even if only for a day, gave Mason a strange stuffy feeling inside his chest. He didn't like the thought at all. He decided to ignore it for the moment.

"And there isn't anything else that connects this Kailey King to William Wright?" Mason asked.

"Not that I can see. She is a model citizen. The only thing that strikes me as odd, is that William took the effort to divorce them. This shows he cares enough about this woman, to not let her suffer self-punishment for abandoning her marital duties, but he should have only met her yesterday according to my data. The whole thing is off."

"I'll observe her for a little while longer," Mason decided.

"Do that, but be careful, she can still be a spy no matter how improbable. Try to figure out how the president's son got his attention on her, what their relationship is and if we can get her to work for us if she isn't a spy." Although Darian was very satisfied with the current development since this could be what they needed, he still felt that it could have waited a few days. From the looks of it Mason's identity isn't compromised and there wasn't anything that required immediate action.

"Sir, if she is proven useful, are you planning to use the prototype on her?"

This question momentarily distracted Darian. "Yes, there is no other way. We can't use her otherwise. It would be too dangerous."

"But, what if it fails? We have never tested it before." Mason thought about the risks. Thinking about Kailey King getting seriously hurt made his chest ache.

"I get your hesitation, Mason, but we'll have to test it out eventually. We can't change the world if we are too afraid to try. We need to take risks, or we'll get nowhere."

"I understand." Mason swallowed. The leader was right. Since when was he someone who was afraid of taking risks? He didn't even know Kailey! What was he worrying about, when it wasn't even sure she was on their side? He needed to get it together.

"Good. And Mason, don't you ever call outside of the arranged time ever again unless your life is under an immediate threat."

"Yes, sir!" Mason got chills all over him. It seemed that he had made a mistake. But at least, he knew all that he wanted now.

Darian Davis hung up the phone, and Mason splayed himself on his small one person bed. The rest of the night Kailey King haunted his mind. He wondered if she ever completed her marital duties with that Liam guy. Imagining her naked and moaning, made him incredibly excited, but then the thought of someone else enjoying her ruined the fantasy. It seemed Kailey King had made a huge impression on him. This could be quite troublesome.
