Chapter 75 - Different from the past

"How about staying at my place? My mansion's big enough to house all of you. I just bought it three years ago, so it's fairly new," Luka proudly flaunted though a bit embarrassed.

Luka knew that Yana was all about money and food, although he knew deep down that Yana's changed from that, Luka still didn't know that Yana wasn't interested in these things.

"No thanks," the doors of the police station closed and Yana stepped into the cold night.

It was quiet and lonely. The lights of the building behind her illuminated the empty parking space full of empty police cars.

Yana rubbed her hands as she looked up at the starry sky. Things from here on would get busy but there was still this bad feeling nagging and nailing itself on the back of her head.

This wouldn't be the end. For them to set the fire they must have another plan. The manager wouldn't be so clueless as to create such a spectacle and leave it to the police to take care of. No.

Also, this kind of petty yet dangerous act couldn't have been schemed by the managers alone. There must have been someone behind it pulling the strings.

It must be 'them'. Yana pulled out her phone. She had to report this to Roy.

The only thing Yana was able to bring with her was her phone she had on her when the fire broke out. Apart from that, all possessions, not only hers but everyone else's turned into ashes.

"It's cold,'' Luka's voice rang behind her and she smoothly stepped away from him to avoid his jacket that he now sadly lowered, then his lips curled into the unfamiliar smirk Yana hasn't seen in a while, "What? You want to get a cold, so I can pamper you in my bed?"

In an instant, Yana pressed her lips into a fine line, she hadn't expected Luka to make such a fatal attack. She thought that he was trying to get on her good side, what was with this provocative temptation that instantly hit her brain into a corner to perform a K.O. on her?

Yana was so shocked that she didn't have a comeback. She could only stare at Luka who was even more enticing in this dark night, shadows hushing across his face, mysterious and daunting, wind rustling his clothes, hair falling over his eyes.

All of sudden, Yana felt like she was back in uni. The time when Luka and her didn't get along quite ye,t when each of them made snarky and mocking comments about each other. At this very moment, Yana desperately wished she could go back to that time.

Carefree and happy, only worrying about some money and what she ate next. If only things could be so easy now. If only Yana continued living in the bliss of the unknown, not yet hit by reality. Only when she laid dead on the streets, would she come to know the truth of the world but then?

Then in her final moments, wouldn't she have regretted being so oblivious to everything? Would she have been happy about living such a boring and normal life even though there was so much suffering and such a big threat?

No, probably in the last seconds before she glided into eternal sleep, she would've wished for an opportunity to save this world to save herself, make use of her life to play the hero. That was why Yana didn't regret, no shouldn't regret the choice she made.

Even though she wasn't her own hero, or was it villain, yet and pursued a life that fit her goal not caring about others, Yana chose this and she wouldn't fall back in nostalgia.

Knowing the terrifying truth and fighting to survive and take revenge was better than dying suddenly with no damn clue, with having nothing achieved.

The more Yana looked at Luka, the more she found he was a shackle that bound her to the past. And she hated it.

"What's wrong?" Luka's smirk dropped as he saw Yana staring at him with a blank face where occasionally a few fleeting yet intense feelings rushed through.

Anger, pain and sadness. Yet why? Was it because of the orphanage?

Luka took a step towards her and it seemed that at this moment, Yana came back from her thoughts and evaded Luka. Seeing his arms slightly stretched out, Yana had the feeling he was going to embrace her and she didn't want that.

"Nothing," Yana looked back at the police station before returning her gaze to Luka, "Have you now booked the hotel rooms?"

"Oh," Luka scratched the back of his head before clearing his throat. He felt like he was caught on the spot. For some reason, it still felt natural to take a dab at Yana, on the other side, it didn't.

Once again, Luka was reminded just how their relationship has deteriorated from the past.

"Bao's taking care of it."

As if the name magically teleported said Bao here, Bao appeared out of nowhere and professionally, still hoping for a raise because of his good work, said, "No need for hotel rooms. I booked an air BnB. Enough for you all to stay in for a while. Very spacious apartment, very good, very comfortable and convenient."

Bao nodded and quickly wiped the smug from this face that sneakily tried to appear every once and then. His big brain play even made himself proud.

He was really the best assistant there was. He deserved the number 1 spot as the top assistant in the whole world.

Seeing that Yana didn't disagree, Luka quickly said, "Good job."

Then he pulled by Bao to the side and whispered, "Do you have someone keeping tabs on Yolinda?"

Bao flinched and nervously twirled his fingers. He was after all a disgraceful assistant, "Actually we lost her a while ago."

But Luka was neither angry nor annoyed. Instead, it was a given. Every time she appeared out of nowhere and disappeared into Neverland, Luka, no matter who he hired, has never been able to trail her or trace her whereabouts, so he wasn't expecting anything.

"Ok, just make sure she doesn't find out about this or-"

"Miss Yana, got it," Bao nodded but then shook his head, "I doubt it'll be easy though."

"Yes, it won't," because just as Luka wasted her time, it seemed like Yolinda knew of everything Luka did, even the things he tried hard to hide.

Luka looked at Yana who talked to Seli and Melinda and a complicated look flashed through his eyes. What was this ominous feeling he got?
