Chapter 74 - This is where we stand.

In the end, Yana still relied on Luka. It was best to have Luka back her up in this situation and help her if there were any problems.

Yana wondered if Luka was willing to go so far as to support her, after all, they weren't that close and in hindsight, it seemed both had their reasons to exploit each other.

But it seemed like Yana didn't need to stress much about it as Luka sounded very worried on the phone, albeit it could be about the children, seeing how he tried to get close to them.

Since Luka was still, for whatever reason, at the company, it took a while for him to come to the police station but Yana didn't mind. After all, the police didn't need to talk to Luka at all since he wasn't present but they might still question him as the owner.

"Miss Yana, are you finished with your call?" a police officer walked into the room to check on her.

Yana nodded.

"Then can we begin?"

"Yes."

After thinking about what to say, Yana decided not to leave the matters to the police, after all, what she was about to do afterwards was as grave as what the managers have done to the orphanage.

So, in the end, Yana dished them the same story as the others, more or less. She suddenly woke up as she smelt something burning, then realised that a fire had broken out, so she instantly ran to wake the others up. Yana wasn't able to leave out Carol and her siblings as Melinda and Seli begged the police to find them.

Yana had mixed feelings about Carol. Ultimately, what Carold did wasn't right but now, looking at the bigger picture, Carol didn't do anything bad apart from acting as a spy.

Carol wasn't the one who set the orphanage on fire so whatever future had in store for Carol, Yana didn't care. The only concerning thing was Carol taking her two siblings with her.

If anything happened to Carol, it was the children who had their future taken away. So, in hindsight, it was better if Carol and her siblings were found.

Yana's bigger concern was the police investigating the cause of the fire.

The possibility of them finding out that it was arson wasn't that low.

Considering the sloppy work the managers have done before it could be possible that they left traces behind. But here laid the problem, the police might not be able to find the culprit, after all, three major companies would be backing them up and might even pressure the police to drop the case and sweep everything under the rug.

Yana's concern was that the police would get in her way. She couldn't rely on them. It was more or less notorious for them to be corrupt and get money from influential people.

Especially in a city like City M where there was almost an abundance of the upper class while those with nothing most of the time, had to suffer injustice or were silenced to never speak up.

This was just how the world was. Going against people with power and money was basically impossible for the little people and no matter how wonderful City M seemed to be, it still had its very dark sides that never saw light.

It wasn't possible for a single small person to change anything but it probably could spark a chain of pebbles to fall onto this unfair mask and slowly but surely put a dent into it.

However, this was none of Yana's business.

Fighting for justice to care about others was never in Yana's dictionary. She has always put herself and her goals first, it was just thanks to her appearance and bubbly personality that no one easily recognised.

Back then in uni, it was only Mia who more or less saw through Yana. Yana quickly shook her head. These were memories of the past that had to be forgotten.

"Then this is all for today," the police officer stretched himself and yawned. Well, Yana glanced at the clock, it was already 2 am. The children were asleep too and Yana also wanted to rest but there was still so much to do.

"Thanks," Yana smiled at the officer who nodded when another came in, "There's someone."

It must be Luka.

Yana followed the officer and spotted Luka and Bao at the entrance. Seeing Bao's pale and tired face, Yana wondered if he was always plastered to Luka but before she could say anything she was already swept off the floor and found herself in a warm embrace.

Strong arms held her tightly while a big hand slowly stroked the back of her head.

"You're not hurt, right?" a low and hoarse voice brought a weird tingling feeling inside Yana.

She couldn't move nor shake her head, so she pressed out, "No, I'm fine."

"Good," Luka abruptly answered before holding her closer to him as if he deemed the non-existent distance between them was still too far and wanted to mould him and Yana together.

Yana felt a bit helpless. She didn't know what to feel. Having Luka instantly run to her, worried and anxious, was an alien experience she wished didn't happen, because the more she spent time with Luka, the more it seemed to chip away on her determination.

"Luka, I can't breathe," Yana tried to push her hands against his chest but couldn't, so she had to wait until he showed her mercy and finally let her go.

Once he put a bit of distance between them, Luka still held Yana on her shoulders and looked her up and down wanting to make sure she told the truth about not being injured.

Yana wanted to know what expression he was making but didn't dare to look into his eyes because she was sure, the minute she did, she would be drowning in the warm and tender glint in his eyes and this was absolutely not what she wanted.

She needed to put distance between them again. Yana has thought this several times before. Luka was really dangerous.

She was just being nice to him to exploit him but if she wasn't careful, his actions would tear her apart and have her beg him to glue her together again.

At this rate, Luka might be the one exploiting her. Yana still wasn't sure if he was sincere or not.

"I'm fine, I already said,'' Yana brushed Luka's hands and walked towards the entrance, "I only called you to do us a favour, nothing else. Sorry if I disturbed you."

It was even obvious to a stranger that Yana was keeping Luka at an arm's length.

Luka was perplexed. What did he do for Yana to act so coldly again? What did he do wrong for them to grow apart again? Luka wanted to grab her and ask but calmed down at the last second and only smiled, "If it's you, I don't mind anything. What do you need?"

Yana still remained distant but was slightly shocked to see that Luka wasn't fazed by her acting cold instead threw more cheesy lines at her. Could it be he really had an ulterior motive? Yana only glanced at Luka before saying, "Book some hotel rooms. The children need a place to stay."

Right. Yana was only exploiting Luka. This was their relationship.
