Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: Crescent Gleam

Mayari took a breath before she twitch the knob and open the door. She finally entered Adolf's office and close the door behind.

"What do you want, Mayari?" Adolf asked while looking at his big glass window as he holds a glass of wine and suck cigarette.

Mayari took a step closer.

"I want to quit the organization" Mayari goes straight to the point.

Then in anger her father immediately face her and throw the glass of wine to her. Mayari can easily dodge it, but she didn't instead she received it, she knows it will only make her father more angrier if she dodge.

The glass shattered in Mayari's head, scarlet blood then drip after but she didn't mind it, like nothing happened.

"Remember this Mayari, you can only leave the organization if you have left this world! Therefore, you can never leave unless you die!" Adolf loudly said with anger, "Understood!?"

"Yes, Father..." she replied.

She turned with her heels and walk to the door.

"Don't even think about running away, you know how powerful my organization is, you'll be in hell in no time" Adolf threatened.

"This is already hell." Mayari whispered to herself.

She then grabbed the knob once again, open the door, and left right away that she didn't notice the evil smile that her father sickly wear.

Mayari is in her apartment, treating the wound in her head.

She stared at herself in her mirror and then she sighed.

"I couldn't leave this hell 'till I die." She mumbled to herself.

She took a minute staring at her reflection, then she hurriedly opened a drawer. Inside there is a gun, she then took it and immediately pointed it to the side of her head.

She inhaled a shaky breath and entwined her finger to the trigger.

"Pull..."

"Pull..."

"Pull..."

She repeatedly whispered to herself 'till her hand started to shake.

'Just pull the trigger...' she thought as she close her eyes.

Then she let go of the gun.

Mayari woke up.

Her eyes then shot open to the unfamiliar ceiling before her. She then sat up, and scanned her surroundings.

She clearly see that this isn't her room, the place had an old fashion style, even all furnitures are antiques, yet it is beautiful and luxurious.

Mayari then pinned her stare to her bed and reach her hand to hold her head as she tries to remember what happened last night.

Memories then flashed before her eyes like lightning as she remembered everything.

She immediately pulled her shirt up and trace her fingertips to her abdomen. There are no bullets, there is no wounds or scars, it is like nothing happened.

She heard noises outside, so she stood up and opened a window.

Her eyes rounded in shock to see that all buildings and structure outside are all different.

Even the roads, there are no vehicles, there are only carriages but it wasn't drawn by horses instead it is drawn by a very big, strange looking, lizard.

The peoples are dressed different, most of them are dressed in long dresses and formal wears.

'Where am I?' she asked herself through her mind but her subconscious only answered silence.

"Oh! Your already awake" Mayari heard a familiar voice from her back.

She immediately turned around and saw the same, middle age woman that accidentally bumped her at the parking lot.

"Good morning and welcome to your new world." She said with a warm smile.

"Is this the afterlife?" Mayari asked with a serious tone.

But the woman only stared at her for a second and then burst into laughter.

"I'll take that as a yes".

"Hahaha... No dear, this is not the afterlife..." She informed, "This is another world hidden from the stars of the universe, and your still alive, I healed and brought you here last night"

Mayari look back at the window and whispered to herself, "This is a different world..."

With her back still facing the woman she asked.

"Why did you save me?"

"Because I have chosen you to be my apprentice" the woman immediately replied while smiling at her.

"Your apprentice?" Mayari turned her head slightly.

"Yes, I am an aging sorceress, I need an apprentice to pass my knowledge before I completely forgot about them all." She took a step closer to Mayari, "And I find you worthy."

"Don't worry I won't force you, the decision is yours to choose if you will accept my offer or not" she immediately added.

'A world of freedom' her subconscious echoed those words repeatedly in her head and she knew this is what she always have wanted.

"If you need more time-" she was suddenly cut off.

"Yes, I'll accept your offer." She immediately answered.

The woman blink once, twice then smiled at her with all warmth. "I'm very happy you accepted my offer, dear, but I hope you aren't forced."

Mayari averted her to gaze to the sky and replied, "I decided with my own free will."

"Then everything is settled," the woman stated, "I'm Helen Revinyr and for now on I will be your teacher, Mayari Alverno."

Mayari haven't introduce herself to Helen, but she already knows her name. With unexpressed shock, she the turned to her with suspicion.

"How much do you knew about me? And how did you know?" Mayari asked coldly with a glare.

"No one knows best about you, dear, than me. Every secrets, every little lies, and sins you did I knew it all." She told while still smiling, Mayari couldn't see any malice but she felt uneasy. "I have been with your shadow in all those years. You have grown so as your power."

"When we met at the parking lot, that's not a coincidence, isn't it?"

She nodded, "Yes, I planned that on purpose to plant a spell, teleporting you here."

"What do you want from me?" Mayari asked with blankness on her tone.

Helen then walk near her until they where just inches apart, she then reach her hand and stroke Mayari's cheek with all gentleness. The sun's rays gleamed her feature with delicate warmth that correspond her loving smile.

"I've seen you suffer since you were a child, dear." She spoke with all means, "Sorry, it took me long to decide to take you away from hell. I want nothing from you but to give you a blissful life of freedom that you could cherish living."

Mayari's pupils widened in surprise, no one have ever spoke to her those words in such long years. All suspicions and anxiety then slipped from her view, and all is left to see is something that she could only comprehend as opposite to hell.

"Who really are you?" Mayari breath.

"Define me whatever you want, dear. Just remember that I am someone you  could rely."

Mayari was dumbfounded by what she is hearing, this is too good to be reality yet this isn't a dream. This woman before her truly cared, she don't know who she is but her uneasiness was suddenly replace with assured feelings in just her simple words.

Helen then recoiled her hand and took a step backward.

"I already prepared a bath for you, in case you woke up, and you did. I've already bought clothes and a pair of shoes for you to wear, it is in your closet so you don't have to worry about anything" Helen utter, "I shall take my leave now, I'll come back later"

Mayari followed a stare as Helen was about to leave the room, when she suddenly remembered something. "Oh I almost forgot, when I change your bloody clothes, I noticed there are a lot of scars in your body, the bath I prepared has a healing magic that can remove your scars and smoothen your skin, so do enjoy" then she left.

Mayari then put aside everything that is twirling in her mind making her head ache. She went to the bathroom, there was a bath tub, she touched the water, it is still warm, and somehow the water smells like perfume, and it's fragrance filled the entire room.

Mayari took off her clothes and sunk her body to the water, she touched her scars from her back, it is still there. She relax herself and face the bathroom ceiling. She closed her eyes, and a memory suddenly invaded her thoughts.

It was from years ago, she was still very young and her father had already signed her in to the assassin training, the training and lessons are very hard that she couldn't keep up, she fell down on her knees and cried.

"Please... I don't want this anymore... Please... I quit I can't do this anymore... Father, please" Mayari beg as tears fell down on her cheeks.

But her father just grinned wickedly at her, and grab his whip. Mayari knows what will happen next so she tried to run, but before she could even get up, two men that is with her father grabbed her. And with the chains they shakled her hands and feet. Adolf stood up from the couch, and slowly walk towards Mayari, facing her back.

Adolf raise the whip high above his head and slash it with force to Mayari's back, the wind sung as the whip repeatedly strike to her skin tearing it off as it implant deep wounds where crimson blood unendingly ooze out.

"Father, please... no... please-",

But Adolf just ignored her begging as he continued to grin with pleasure, whilr Mayari's tears of pain flooded down from her eyes as she screamed and cried for mercy.

Adolf didn't stop, and again and again and again whip Mayari like an animal of no value, she almost fainted in pain yet her father showed no clemency towards her.

When he was done, he left. Mayari's  shirt from the back was torn off, her bone is sticking out of her tattered flesh and countless bleeding wounds and painful bruises decorated her skin with agony.

The other kids, who was also in assassin training, and their trainor didn't dare to help. And just ignored her, they are afraid that they will also get whip or worse, if they help or even be friends with her.

All of the kids are training to be the organizations assassins in the future, they do that on their own free will just for money, not like Mayari who wasn't even consulted. Mayari is also the youngest of the group and the weakest, she is treated with less care, she always fail the training because it is too hard for her age, and she is always beaten up everyday by her father.

But as years pass by, she change. Being ignored, she became used to it and also ignored them back, the hard training doesn't stand a chance, she have already been the strongest and the best, and the everyday beat up, she endured it, like it was nothing anymore, no tears had fallen or any scream that can be heard.

But that change, also didn't go well, Mayari became emotionless in the surface, instead of showing and sharing her emotions and expression to others, she hides it inside. She also don't show mercy to her prey, like her father, she is a perfect example of a killing machine.

Mayari opened her eyes after suddenly feeling the sooting relaxation from her back. She touch her scars again, and she was surprised to felt that all her scars dissapeared, even the deep ones. She touches it again to confirm and it is really gone.

She quickly stood up, wrapped her body with a towel and run out of the bathroom, towards the mirror of the bedroom. She turned around and loosen the towel in her back, there she can see in the mirror that all her scars vanished from her feature and her morena skin is as clear and smooth as a new born baby.

After the amazement, Mayari dried herself, she opened the closet and saw a long sleeve and length orange dress. She wore the dress and it suits her perfectly, she also do her long, straight, black raven hair, and her deep brown eyes  reflected herself clearly, from the mirror.

A knock then came in from the door after she finished.

"It's me, are you done?" Came Helen's voice. Mayari opened the door, Helen came in bringing food.

"We haven't have breakfast yet, so I brought food" Helen said, while she is preparing the meal in the table.

"Where are we exactly?" Mayari asked as she sat down.

"Where at a Inn in the central city of  Enchantia" Helen said as she also sat down.

"So this country's name is Enchantia?"

"Yes, and it is ruled by King Stephen and Queen Elvira Arscelor"

After their meal, Helen started packing up her stuff.

"Where are we going?" Mayari asked.

"Where going shopping" Helen replied with an exitement in her expression. "C'mon, let's go" she immediately grabbed Mayari and head outside.

When they got out of the inn a carriage drawn by some kind of a big lizard is waiting for them.

"Are you ready, Ms. Helen?" the coachman asked politely.

"Yes, I am." She answered, "Mayari, this is my own dragon drawn carriage, isn't it fancy?"

Mayari didn't responded, and stayed silent while staring at the alien creature.

"Now, let's go in and head to the dress and jewelry shop" Helen said as she pushed her to get in the carriage.

Helen brought Mayari to different shopping places in the big city, and even though Mayari refuses to buy such fancy dresses and items, Helen still bought it for her, specially if it looks beautiful on her.

It is almost night time when they have finished shopping, and after shopping Mayari and Helen arrived at a big mansion, far from the city.

"Where are we now?" Mayari asked with boredom as the carriage entered the big gate.

"This is my home." Helen replied looking at the big beautiful mansion, "and so as yours.

"Welcome back home, Ms. Helen" All servants bowed and welcomed her, while she and Mayari are coming out from the carriage.

"Thank you everyone, by the way this is Mayari Alverno, my apprentice, she will be living here for now on." Helen explained when she and Mayari had gotten out of the carriage.

"Welcome Ms. Mayari, for now on we shall  be your servants, feel free to asked anything" they bowed again to also welcome Mayari.

"Now, ready one of the bedrooms for her, while we eat dinner"

"Of course Ms. Helen, we will take care of the rest" a maid, that is the head of all servants, replied politely.

After a hearty dinner, a maid showed Mayari the way to her bedroom. Her bedroom is huge, with a theme colour of white and gold, it also has a king size bed, a large closet, fancy bathroom, and expensive furnitures, but it didn't really surprise her, after all she is a rich killer in her world.

After taking a warm bath and changing into her night gown, she turned off the lights and lay down in her big bed. She notice the moonlight passing through her window, she stared at it and remembered the nights she cried in pain, when she was still a child, and the nights where blood always flows as the pool of bloody rose form below the unfortunate corpses she met.

Soon she drifted into a relaxing sleep, her mind is at ease and her eyes are now closed, that she didn't know her crescent moon birth mark gleamed along with the moonlight.
