Chapter 39 - Chapter 038

No matter how one sees it, Charmander was his main Pokemon currently and it would be the same going forward, but as he was just starting out currently, Charmander had a lot of apparent weaknesses.

One of them was his moveset.

Arthur had already given thought to this before, but he wasn't able to do much about this problem.

Because of this, he was worrying more and more about his gym battle with Brock. Despite being his ace, Charmander won't be able to last long against rock Pokemon due to the non effective typing and a bland moveset.

Charmander doesn't have a single super effective move to use against Brock's rock Pokemon and Arthur was even contemplating whether he should use Scyther over him.

But finally, there was hope.

He now had a TM that contained dig and he was sure that this move would suit Charmander a lot, especially in his current situation.

After all, dig was a move that would work perfectly on rock Pokemon and Charmander's quick movements would surely make it more lethal, giving it an extra edge.

It was surely not beneficial to him in the long run as Charmander would get wings after evolving into Charizard and he can just fly, making dig practically useless.

But there was no doubt that it was great as a short term investment.

Not only would it give Charmander a wider variety of moveset, it would also come in handy at various other situations outside of battle.

That's why Arthur decided not to sell the TM, but to use it on Charmander instead.

The upcoming battle with Brock had surely helped him in taking this decision, but nonetheless, it was a good one and he was gonna make sure that he won't regret it.

He felt bad for the lab coat wearing man, but there was nothing he could do. He said sorry to him and scurried back to the reception. There, a lot of gazes glanced at him.

'I sure got famous just cause of a TM.'

Arthur thought and ignored the gazes.

He would have to wait before he can use the TM on Charmander as he was still getting a full checkup done along with his other Pokemon. Apart from that, he needed to register for his gym battle at the Pewter city gym.

As there were a lot of trainers wanting to have a gym battle, there was a procedure to follow just to take part in one.

It wasn't something that he liked, but he didn't have a choice.

That's why, he made his way outside the Pokemon center and started walking towards the gym. The Pewter city gym was located in the southern part of the city and it was one of the biggest and most renowned buildings.

The exterior of the gym was made up of the most sturdy rock in the Kanto region, giving it a sturdy feeling and as it was just renovated a few years ago, the gym also had a modern touch to it.

Arthur was able to see many trainers going in and out of the gym when he reached there, but there were no signs of Brock.

'He must be in the middle of a battle.'

Arthur guessed as he walked towards the reception.

"I want to register for a gym battle." He said, walking up to a young guy wearing a brown cap, who looked to be one of the gym trainers.

Gym trainers were sort of apprentices to the gym leader and they also handled the job of maintaining the gym.

During their apprenticeship, they learn about Pokemon battles and tactics from the gym leader and if they were lucky, the gym leader would nominate them as the next head of the gym after he retires.

This was also one of the ways to become a Pokemon trainer as a gym trainer would receive a Pokemon from the gym leader, qualifying him as a trainer.

The gym trainer that Arthur talked to looked to be one of the younger ones.

"You need to wait for two days before you can challenge Brock. He's quite busy with the other challenges these days and the only open slot is after two days. Is that fine with you?"

The young gym trainer said as he looked up through his tablet.

"That's fine with me."

"Give me your trainer ID and I will make an entry for you. Remember to be here on time for the gym battle or you will be disqualified."

Arthur nodded his head and passed on his trainer card.

The rest was quite easy and he didn't need to do anything else. While looking around the gym absentmindedly, he asked.

"Is Brock in the middle of a battle currently?"

"Yeah, he's currently being challenged by a trainer from Cerulean city. It's a tough battle as the trainer is using water Pokemon, but he doesn't seem to be losing."

The gym trainer said with a hint of pride in his voice. Water Pokemon were the main nemesis of rock Pokemon and the ability to win against them had made Brock a famous trainer.

"Can I see the battle?"

Arthur asked, wanting to see Brock in action. He wanted to get a view of what he was going to be facing to prepare better for the battle, but the gym trainer shook his head.

"Brock doesn't allow people to barge in the middle of an ongoing gym battle. It's a rule of our gym and we can't do anything about it."

A dejected sigh escaped his lips when Arthur heard that, but rules were rules and he can't break them.

Some gym trainers do allow the audience to come in and out of a gym battle, but it mainly depended on the gym leader. Some think that the audience will cause a disturbance during a gym battle and some just didn't want to lose their focus.

Brock also seems to do the same.

As Arthur couldn't do anything about it, he left the gym and headed back to the Pokemon center. He did want to sightsee a little, but he was too tired.

The only thing in his mind was to get some rest and as soon as he reached his room in the Pokemon center, he fell asleep.
