Daniel had been following the trail for a while when he came up to a huge sign that read, "Welcome to Chicago!" He had to be cautious. There was not a single sound made as he walked through the city. There were signs of the invasion all over; a crumbled building here, a collapsed apartment there, and the road was broken up in many places. He hadn't seen anything out of the ordinary yet. That was the scary part. As soon as that thought went through his head, he saw them.
There were thousands of them. At first he thought that they were the aliens coming to abduct him. He was about to run away when he saw something that stopped him dead in his tracks. They were humans! All this time he had thought that the people under the dome were the last alive, but here they are. Maybe they won the war and living under the water is pointless, he thought. Overjoyed, he ran to them.
The closer he got, the more he noticed something was off. They moved like an army. Every step in sync with the person next to them. When he could see one of their faces, he made out not a face of joy, but one of malicious intent. As he turned to run, he hit something and was knocked off of his feet. That something, he would find out, would be what caused him to unravel the most. When he looked up, he met the eyes of someone who raised him, loved him, and cared for him beyond limits. He could do nothing as he looked directly into the eyes of his father.
His father did not embrace him. He didn't even seem to recognize him. Instead, he merely bent down and picked Daniel up. "How could you do this!" Daniel cried. His dad was working with the enemy! "It is better this way," his dad said without emotion. This cannot be right, he thought. They must have done something to him. His dad would never do this. He knew that much. The aliens must be controlling him in some way. He could do nothing but struggle as his father carried him away.
