Chapter 18 - Chapter Sixteen

All the dragons scrambled to get into the air, almost losing formation entirely. Some dragons seemed to ignore their riders completely as they tried to take off in different directions, clearly panicked.

Shouting from different soldiers could be heard in between the occasional roar from a dragon. Molis stayed mostly calm, except MeiAnne could feel her heart beating rapidly. The same could be said for all of Raba's Flight, truly. It was the most under control and calm compared to the others.

Loola used her magic to light up the field, for the sake of the soldiers and to also try and blind the beings on the ground. None of the other dragons had used their magic yet, although whether or not it was out of fear or remembering to wait for a command MeiAnne wasn't sure.

Raba was shouting at those behind him, with the Flight Commanders helping to spread his orders. They needed to get up high first to regain formation. Then they would dive down in mass to strike the field with as much as they could.

MeiAnne knew what Raba was most likely thinking, they don't know what these things are so they are not taking chances. Now she hoped that would work.

The light from Loola remained at the same spot and same intensity while everyone regathered at a higher altitude. It took longer than MeiAnne would've thought from all of these veteran soldiers, and when she looked up at Raba she could see he was disappointed in his forces. His glare swept the air space behind him, as he was fuming. Once his eyes met MeiAnne's he froze. His face changed quickly to one of concern as he held his gaze with her.

He had to break that look, however, as there was something more pressing. Now with everything back under control the Flight's began their dive.

Every dragon held their wings close to their body to gain as much speed as they could. Dragons each did what they could with their magic. Brown dragons like Truis in front of her tore gashed in the ground as the earth shook. Fires raged all round, yet the shadowy figures seemed to barely notice. Molis brought snow and winds like a blizzard beneath her. Other blue dragons used their magic to freeze the ground at the feet of the mysterious beings in an attempt to lower mobility. The green dragons pulled together to speed the approach of the violent storm over the mountains. Wind raged along with all the other forces to aid the other dragons in their dive.

Through all of that only a few figures collapsed to the ground, as most remained unmoved.

The Flight's had to pull back up to be able to go for another run after circling. As they all tilted in the air MeiAnne looked down. Each of the figures had something growing in their hands. It elongated at the same rate the beings appeared at, forming spears from the same material the beings were.

This time as the dragons tucked their wings to dive they were met with resistance. A few spears rushed past Molis and MeiAnne before she heard the screams.

She looked back to see several dragons and their partners had been hit. All the air froze in her lungs when she saw one pair. A spear had pierced both dragon and rider, pinning the dragon's neck to the riders chest, both screaming as they careened to the ground. They weren't the only one's falling either.

They couldn't pull up fast enough to avoid another volley of spears. MeiAnne saw as they were only feet above the ground as three spears came straight towards Molis. She heard the tearing of leather as she saw her harness strap flying in the wind. Red droplets flew past her as well as she felt a searing pain in her side.

Yet her heart plummeted when she saw the spear that caught her had torn through Molis' right wing. Her partner struggled to force herself higher into the sky and out of danger, but with each push and beat of her wings the membrane tore more.

"You can do it! Please Molis!'' MeiAnne cried out as Molis groaned and whined; tears streaming from MeiAnne's face as she felt how hard her partner was pushing herself.

They broke out of formation to get to safety, hearing Gen yelling out behind them. Dragon's roaring and soldiers screaming continued in the distance.

Then MeiAnne felt Molis lurch and roar out in pain. She looked down to see the end of one of the shadowy spears protruding from Molis' underbelly.

"No!" MeiAnne screamed out as if she had been the one struck.

They were losing altitude fast, and since MeiAnne's harness had been torn she felt herself losing her grip on Molis and lifting off the saddle.

Molis whined as she pushed herself to form a snow drift below them. MeiAnne reached out to try and hold on, but Molis bucked, pushing MeiAnne towards the snow drift at the last second.

As MeiAnne crashed into the freezing snow, landing with the sound of her leg snapping despite the cushioning, she heard Molis crash into the bare field.

MeiAnne could not hear anything, not even the scream she felt passing her lips as she crawled towards the glacier blue dragon she loved. Each movement drove pain up her leg and through her whole body, but it was as if her need to reach Molis numbed her. The closer she got the more blood she saw pooling around her partner.

She dragged herself around to Molis' head, laying on the ground motionless in the reddened mud. Her eyes were still open. It allowed MeiAnne to watch as the beautiful sunset colored eyes glassed over as she felt Molis' last huff of air hit her.

This time she could hear herself scream out. She clutched Molis' lifeless head to her chest as the pain in her body came back to her attention. As she clenched her eyes shut she heard her cries grow silent before her body shut down. She slouched over her partner's head and neck as she lost consciousness.
