Chapter 36 - Chapter 36

A fire gleamed over the dark sky, the shadows of the trees lurked and danced along the brightness of the fire. Kazein's field felt all of those which he couldn't have.

[I remember, before that seraph fell, I was able to take the moment and switch with him. Where am I? Why's there a fire and a camp here?] He thought by himself [Argh! My head is killing me! What is it? I feel like I have to remember something!]

"You woke up? It's good that you did." The gentle voice of a woman echoed through his ears.

[Shit! Who is it?! I couldn't even feel her with my field. Why?!]

"Oh? Don't be like that. If you're wondering why you couldn't sense me. It's because I have no path power within me. Field? That's a useful ability for someone like you."

"Who are you? Why did you help me?" Those were the first words he asked of the woman.

The woman smiled, and walked towards him, she stopped two meters away from him, and sat by a log. "Qin Xia, and I just did so because I saw you fall to the river. You? Who are you? And why are you here?"

"I don't know. I don't even know why did I fall to that river." Kazein answered while he had his arm by his head.

"You can't remember? Well, that's a bad thing. So, do you have anywhere to go? Do you want to go with me?" She offered while she extended her hand towards Kazein.

"Why?" He asked reluctantly.

"Hmm. Because you have nowhere to go and you can't remember stuff? What else is a good reason?"

"Kata! Kata! Kata!" The sounds of horses galloping could be heard and the shouting and yelling of men in a language that couldn't be defined by what one knows. Suddenly, they found themselves surrounded by men on horses, they were roughly equipped, as if to say they ransacked it themselves.

A man with a sword 3 feet long and had a curved blade had his horse a bit more nearer by the two. He spoke in a loud voice in a language unknown, but it was clear, they meant to bring harm. After it's voice finished roaring, the men on horses rushed to attack them. By instinct, Kazein protected Qin Xia, when the men on horse back were close, he disappeared. Shortly after, blood spilled, heads rolled and horses panicked.

Kazein appeared after killing twenty people. The man who had a large sword and a curved edge, dismounted and yelled in a loud voice "#@$1$€£¢¶¢" still, it wasn't understandable. In a moment, Kazein just cut off his head. The remaining soldiers saw this, and in the loss of their leader, ran away and fleed.

A moment later, Kazein looked at his arm, it held the slayer's sword flowing with blood. He couldn't release the grip from it, he tried using the other arm to force it open, but he couldn't. Then, two hands opened it with a bit off struggling.

"Just, who are you?" Qin Xia asked.

"I told you, I can't remember." Kazein replied with a smile.

Qin Xia didn't seem to be bothered with blood nor killing. "I see, then, should I call you, Shiyi? It means lost memory. You say you can't remember stuff right? But what do you remember?"

"I was, being hunted down." Remembering the arrows shot by his back and the chains that bounded him. "A someone shit me with mysterious arrows, then I was bound by chains." He paused while he placed his arm by his head to support it as it ached once more. "I feel like, there is something I must really remember."

Qin Xia looked at him and said "Then, what happened?"

"There was someone, a woman, she hugged me and talked to me? After which, everything was bright, earthen walls took her from me. I can't remember all too well, but it's all I know." He sat up by the fire.

"Well, no use worrying about what you can't even remember. Why don't you worry about that later?"

"True, thanks for the help. I'd better leave now. Those guys must be from those that want me dead. If I stay with Qin Xia, you'd be in danger." He said while having the scent of worry by his face.

"Pfft!" She laughed while her hands held her stomach. "Sorry! Hahaha. I can't stop laughing. Those guys? They're from the enemy army. How could they have time for you? Oars mercenaries. They control the south east sea, they have ships of all sizes. But their battle prowess on land is considerably strong, they may not be fans of horses, yet their amazing discipline and unyielding behavior even in the face of death causes them to be feared all through out."

"Oars... Mercenary?.... Old... Man?..." Kazein had his sword appear once more by his hand. "I remember... Oars... Mercenary... That was my old man's old place... He ran from the order... He met my mother... They had me, raised me by a small remote border village..." He paused for a while, Qin Xia looked at his face, it had a deathly expression and eyes mad. "If he didn't escape his duty... War and kill order... They wouldn't have been issued... And those innocent lives wouldn't have been massacred."

Kazein's reasoning was complicated, but it had a point. If Ur didn't escape the order and abandoned his duty, a kill order wouldn't have been issued. If Ur didn't had him as a son, he wouldn't have suggested hunting to sustain the village's needs. And if those who were capable of fighting, stayed in the village. Maybe some of them lived, and he didn't have had his eyes burned.

"Oars... Mercenary. Why don't you go with me and I'll give you a chance to fight them? Qin kingdom and Raphan empire are at war as of now. Come with me and I'll give you the chance. Your strength will be formidable and a great addition." She offered after having a short moment to think.

Kazein had a gastly pale by his face, his sword dropped to the ground, he said one word "Gladly."

Qin Xia smiled, then she gave him a bowl of stew. "Sorry if it's only stew. I don't know how to hunt. Not like I can in the first place."

Kazein ignored her and had a sip, in an instant, his body felt warm. His face returned to a bright and warm expression, his eyes had tears in them "Mother." The stew reminded him of when he was at his mother's home. He gulped it all down, coughing as his tongue was singed. But he still wanted more, Qin Xia kindly gave him seconds.

"I see, you must have been attached to your mother."

"Yes, I loved her." He replied after finishing the second bowl.

Qin Xia touched his hands, and looked at him. "Even though your eyes were burned and you are blinded. Don't forget, she still loves you. Her soul must be in heaven praying for your safety."

Kazein didn't speak, he just let the tears by his eyes flow.

"Look, even when you had a scary look on your face a while ago. No one would have guessed you are capable of tears."

"I guess so. Hahaha" He laughed.

"Then, for now as you don't remember your name, I'll still call you Shiyi. Okay?"

"Sure."

For a while, they chatted. And they went to rest when the wolves howled at the full moon as clouds that shrouded it's brightness moved and let light pass through.
