Chapter 17 - Chapter 17 - The list

[*The first chapter has been completed*]

Every player in the game received world messages. One after another they kept talking about some unknown hero. A hero of dreams. It instantly became a topic of interest for everyone playing the game.

"Who's this hero of dreams supposed to be?"

"Is it Apollo?"

"No, it's got to be Kale right?"

"I think it might be Nyx. After all it doesn't specify a gender."

Debates came in droves as players tried to find out who the mysterious hero was. High ranking players were gathered for interviews as soon as possible. Everyone wanted to know who the next rising star would be.

After a couple of hours of waiting in the dark. A conference was held by most of the current high ranking players of the Ushian kingdom.

Apollo ranked 3rd, Iris ranked 7th, and Emir ranked 5th sat in front of a crowd of over 5000 reporters. The population of players in Silver skies was already reaching numbers over 1 billion. It wasn't a stretch to say it was currently the largest and most talked about game in the world.

After quieting the crowd, Apollo pointed to a female reporter raising her hand. "Apollo, as I'm sure everyone is wondering. Who is this mystery hero?"

He cleared his throat before speaking. "Currently our guild is unaware of this user's identity. But we have reason to believe that it is one of the two legendary class users that has sprung up recently."

Another male reporter raised his hand. "Do you know the identities of those two users?"

Apollo could already tell where this was going. "As it stands, no, we don't know their identities." The moonlight blade guild was aware of who the second user was, but preferred to keep that information more hidden. The broadcast was going out to all players after all.

They couldn't afford to reveal any information that might affect their current advantage in the war. Kale was known to be the number 1 player among users, but it wasn't known that he was also a legendary class user.

He currently didn't want to belong in the war. But he still resided and completed quests inside the confines of the Ushain kingdom. 'His reputation within the kingdom must've also gotten him that damn legendary class' Apollo thought.

Kale's level was rising at a terrifying rate. It was publicly listed on the ranking list as 167. After getting his new legendary class, it seemed like his leveling speed almost doubled. There wasn't much info they could get on Kale from the king as he wanted to keep a tight lock on Kale's identity.

It was like trying to talk to a brick wall whenever they messaged him for answers. The frustration Apollo felt when he was compared to a mute. It wouldn't be long before Apollo could look back on these memories and think of how much stronger his guild would become over the solo legendary player.

Another reported interrupted Apollo's thoughts with a question. "Apollo, should the Ushain kingdom be worried about possibly fighting against these legendary class users in the upcoming war?"

"No, the Ushain kingdom has nothing to fear." Apollo's response was serious. Ushain citizens cheered at his response. He was a little ticked off at the question, but he couldn't reveal what he really felt. There was nothing more he wanted than for the Cosal kingdom to fall.

The profits he and his guild would receive from the newly gained territory was 10 times as much as they earned now. He wouldn't have to worry about money inside and outside the game for a long period of time. The variables just needed to be taken care of before the battle began.

Back in the real world. A massive amount of the BDG staff were trying to understand Luna's battle. The first hero's epic activated during the battle, signifying a huge game changing event for the game's story. It wasn't easy for the staff to just pull up footage of her gameplay when it's piled under millions of other potential top tier users.

Using the locations she was previously at, they tried to follow her movements from whichever NPCs she interacted with over the past couple of days. They were able to track her appearance down to three story driving NPCs.

It was Archer the Northwind Knight, General Braggart of the Cosal kingdom, and Jessica Braggart, general Braggart's granddaughter. The event quest to save the Braggarts and their soldiers was meant as a way for a party to gain early fame. It was not for a single player to tear down the Ushain soldiers one by one.

Somehow with her minimal level, Luna was able to surpass Archer in damage and defeat him. It was originally meant for an entire party to fight alongside the general and defeat Archer with minimal loses.

The death of every Cosal soldier was never supposed to happen. It changed the course of things and activated a quest that invited Luna to fight the necromancer named Draec. Her participation in this quest now just changed the course of the war. General Braggart and his granddaughter were supposed to lose the battle and Jessica was supposed to escape alone.

Draec's level was over level 130 and became 150 when he transformed into a lich. Overtime players were supposed to learn about Draec's past and then kill him when the average player's level was 90. Luna's ability to unintentionally manipulate the system of the game's story development was amazing to say the least.

James Yung immediately held a meeting to inform every team of the full picture. He needed them to know what was causing so much chaos currently within the game's media sources.

"First off, I apologize about my previous misconception of the user Luna. If it wasn't for my judgement that day, then we could have monitored the user and prepared for this." James bowed his head.

The manager of the programming department spoke up. "James it isn't just your fault, I don't think any of us expected something like this to happen so early into the game's life-cycle."

A young woman raised her hand. She was the head manager of the chrysalis department. "If you two don't mind... I would like to explain a strange issue we're currently trying to deal with."

The two nodded and she continued. "We all know that Luna was able to surpass the system's original outcome. But there was a strange awakening that her chrysalis received." She laid out files on the round table. "Somehow her chrysalis linked its properties to her class."

A couple of the people in the room gasped. Most were confused as the chrysalis system was often unclear to them. "Well, normally when we scan the brains of our users and take into account everything they're doing, it doesn't take long for their chrysalis to appear." She pulled out a sheet of paper from the file.

"But a chrysalis was supposed to form around the user, not the user's class. After going through the NPC design department, we discovered something interesting." She pointed to a picture of the paper. It was Luna after she just awakened her chrysalis.

"AI number 21 disappeared from the system logs three days ago. We have reason to believe that the user Luna... somehow formed a bond with It." The room became silent.

James lightly coughed. "So you're saying a user made an NPC into their pet?"

"Not just a pet sir.... it's her chrysalis now." The atmosphere in the room grew quiet.

"How is that even possible...?" The general media manager asked. Everyone looked to the head manager of the programming department. The spotlight was put on him and he tried thinking of some type of explanation.

"Well.... although we did implement vague parameters when the game was being developed. There was most likely interference from AI number 4 which caused this to happen."

James Yung spoke up. "I'll need someone to check that as soon as possible. For now, the user Luna should be placed on the list. It's a high priority that she's watched carefully."

"Should we assign AI number 7 to monitor her?" The manager of the development department asked. James thought for a moment. Currently inside the game, the first 10 AI that they implemented were designed to run the game in an orderly fashion. Every AI after that was designated into the game as they usually should.

Out of the 10 AI they had running the game. 3 of them were already occupied with observing variable players that were on the list. Each one would eventually be given a player to observe and study over the course of the game's life so that the system doesn't go out of control. Their role will be to balance out players that are going beyond the system's capabilities.

"Assign number 4 to her. He already seems interested in her after all" James Yung ordered.

"Understood sir!" The group dismissed and left James alone in the room. He walked over and picked up the leftover files that covered the event of the first chapter. Luna's battle against the Draec was an unforeseen circumstance of multiple changed events.

"Let's see what you can do... DreamWalker." James then left the room, bringing the files with him.

A young man with black hair laid against the damp walls of a dungeon. He was drenched in sweat as his eyes glowed a bright orange. It was Kale, Anselme's descendant.

A small creature sat next to him with a large bag on it's back. It's face was reminiscent of a frog with goggles covering the creature's large eyes.

"How much further do we have to go until we reach it?" Kale asked the frog creature.

He pulled out a map from his large bag and looked it over. "It should be another 2 or 3 hours before we can actually find the shield" The frog creature responded.

*Sigh* Kale scratched the back of his head. After he read the contents of the first chapter, he felt a tight feeling in his chest. It was anxiety for the future.

For the first time since he started playing, Kale felt a competitive desire to stay the best. It was his goal from the beginning to exist as an omnipotent user within the game. But someone was taking his glory from him.

Someone named the hero of dreams.

He already knew about the contents of how to write a chapter. It was a passive effect of the title: Legendary one. But no matter how many challenges he faced and how relevant he stayed in the kingdom with his reputation. There was no sign of a chapter appearing as a world message.

It was frustrating to hear those words for someone else. His position at the top felt like it was teased. Even if he was the highest level player, it hurt his pride.

He had to be faster than before. The shield was related to the class quest he originally received from the king. For the past two days, Kale and his new companion named Dip were dungeon crawling in one of the largest ancient temples in the world.

It was troublesome to keep going deeper. The enemy's levels kept increasing the deeper they went. At the depth they were at currently, the average level of the monsters was 190. It wouldn't have been a problem if they fought one at a time.

But each enemy was a mummified ancient warrior. For each one he started to fight, another 2 would appear and join the battle. It slowed his progress and required him to take more breaks.

He was tired and worn. But each time he reminded himself of his dream, he grit his teeth and stood right back up. Dip sat right up with him. "Are you ready to keep going?" He asked.

"Yeah, let's get this over with."
