Chapter 12 - ~10~

"You thought you could freeze me?" Vespertine laughed.

Prim shrugged. "It was worth a shot"

"You'll never bring them back you know" Vespertine taunted.

"You have no idea of what I'm capable of" Prim seethed.

"Oh...But I do. You defeated Mazereth last year. That is something not even the elder could achieve"

"And I'll kill you too"

Vespertine shook her head. "No dear one. You won't"

"Watch me!"

Prim darted across the sand, knocking into Vespertine. And as she was focused on finding her balance again, Prim snatched the dagger and sprinted off in the opposite direction.

"After her!" Vespertine shrieked. And suddenly four wolves emerged from nothing but air. And instantly, the chase began.

Prim turned up the small hill into the trees. Then she let her hold on time slip form her fingers.

"The dagger!" The girls voice echoed in her mind.

Prim looked back just in time to see a wolf leaping through the air, almost directly above her head.

"Ahh!" She cried as she shielded herself with the small blade.

She could hear Vespertine's painful screams as the blade dug deep into the wolfs chest. But not deep enough to kill it.

Prim ducked out of the way as the wolf toppled to the snow.

Then once again the patter of paws and deafening howls faded so quickly it was as if nothing was even chasing her to begin with.

Prim collapsed to her knees, out of breath and sticky from sweat.

"NO!" She screamed as she pounded her fists angrily against the snow. She almost had her. She could have killed Vespertine right then and there! Why had she missed?

At the same moment, Vespertine was also on her knees, but in a different kind of pain.

Her wound was reopened and deeper this time. As soon as the blade had stabbed her she lost hold of her dogs, she was growing weaker and weaker every time she attempted to kill Primrose. And honestly she was growing rather tired of it.

She crawled back to the safety of the sea as blood dripped from her open gash.

The cool water soothed her cut, but it didn't heal it. It was annoying. Any other time she would be able to heal just fine. But now she's let that child play with her knife. And she didn't know how to get it back.

Prim didn't go back to the shore. She continued through the forest, shivering and hungry. She peered up at the dark grey sky and noticed that she couldn't recall the last time she had really seen the sun. It reminded her of how warm earth was at this point in the year. Everything was green, and flowers were blooming, and the sky were always clear.

She missed her friends. She was beginning to think that without them...She'd never be able to save everyone. The fates of two worlds rest on her shoulders, and it was a lot to handle. Powerful she may be, but she was still just a girl.

She could barely drive! But yet she's saving worlds...

How did she get herself into this?

"Where are you off to?" The dragon called out to her.

Prim turned to see the dragon curled up in a tall tree like a snake.

"I need to find my friends"

The dragon shook his head. "I hate to say it. But Vespertine is correct about one thing"

"what?"

"You won't be able to find your friends without her. And if you would've killed her today, your friends would have been lost forever. Unless your friend manages to escape, that is"

"I found where Mazereth was hiding for thousands of years. I can find this too-"

"Mazereth kidnapped you. You found nothing. Your friends are the ones who found where Mazereth was hiding. And then they saved you. You see, your not as powerful as you say. But you know this already. You have flaws. And so do you friends. You wouldn't have been able to kill Mazereth without Dolion's knowledge of the Plane, or the girls guidance, Or your leadership skills, or Benjamin's bravery. Now do you understand? This is why I'm here "

"Because I can't do this on my own. I know" Prim sighed.

"That's not a bad thing" Said the dragon slithering down from the tangle of branches. "You are still stronger than any human I've ever came to know"

Prim smiled up at the salmon colored beast. And deep down she knew he was right.
