Chapter 24 - A new start and a helping hand

"Shall we?" Marie asked trying really hard to hide the excitement in her voice. "We shall" Shadow Cat replied with a wide smile. At first dinner was nothing but complete silence, all that was heard was the sounds of their breathing and Marie hated that. Deciding to break the silence she began to ask him about his day.

"How was your day? You are home early for a change." Shadow felt immense joy at her question. This had to be a dream. Was he really sitting here eating dinner with the love of his life and she was starting a conversation with him? Did he actually die and went to heaven. "Umm it was good sort off."

Shadow did not want to lie to her but he also did not want to worry her. He did not want to tell her that he pissed off his gang's leader by leaving a job early due to his wounds. He had made sure to stop in a bathroom to clean his wound before arriving home so that she never finds out. Marie did not know what to say to that. She really wanted to ask him more about it but would he really trust her like that and would she want to know about his crimes. Lost in thought she stared at the man before her she really did want to know what happened in his day. Maybe she could have made it better.

Marie's thoughts were cut short when she noticed a small red stain on his shirt's shoulder area. First she noticed that for the first time since she met him he had been wearing white and boy did he look good after her eyes landed back on the red spot on the shoulder. It was in the exact position as the one he got three nights ago but that's impossible right? He would have gotten that fixed by now. Marie noticed the spot was becoming a bit bigger she needed to know that it was.

"Shadow, what's that?" Marie asked pointing towards the red spot on his shirt. "Is that blood?" She asked again. Shadow did not want to answer. He had tried to fix his wounds before but it was extremely difficult so instead he would apply alcohol and cover them over again. It would have probably worked but the wound got reopened with every job. Shadow silently cursed himself for forgetting to cover the wound. Great after how hard he tried keeping it away from everyone one simple mistake got him caught.

Marie did not hesitate to get up and walk towards Shadow Cat. "Shadow let me see" Marie commanded both forcedly but also gently trying not to upset him. Shadow only looked down trying to avoid her worried gaze. Marie groaned in frustration. She needed to check on him, she had to help him fix his wounds, he needed to stop being immature. "Cat let me see. Please?" Marie begged while reaching for his shirt earning a nod from shadow as a sign of her being granted permission to continued.

Marie proceeded to lift up Shadow's shirt up to remove it completely but she stopped as she heard Shadow wince in pain. At the slightest move from shoulder he would feel like it was being torn off. The pain was beginning to become unbearable. After a few minutes Shadow was able to remove his shirt off earning a gasp from Marie. His wounds were worse. They were way worse. Marie was not sure how he manages to make them this bad but his side was definitely infected and his shoulders would need serious stitches.

Marie looked into Shadow's eyes disappointed in him. She felt upset with herself. She was not aware that Shadow allowed his wounds to become worse instead of coming to her because he wanted to give her space. She though of how he didn't trust her but she knew this was all on her. "Why? Why didn't you tell me? Why didn't you ask me for help?" She questioned him earning a shrug as a response. "Shadow p-" "because you hated me. Because maybe you were right and I deserved to die." Marie sighed loudly.

There it was, the reason she knew she would hear. The sad part was that it was all her fault. She made him feel this way. She made him feel hated and alone. She made him feel like he deserved to die. She was the one who said she regretted saving his life and he believed it. "I don't hate you cat. I honestly don't think I ever did." Marie was finally honest to him "but" "but nothing cat. Come on let's go get you fixed up we can eat later." With that Marie took Shadow by the hand and led him to the medical supply room where she wasted no time in disinfecting and stitching his wounds.

"Marie?" Shadow called her name. Marie was surprised he had called her by her name. He had never done that before and to be honest she kind of preferred it when he called her princess. "Yes?" she responded. "I-I am sorry. I swear to everything I love that I never meant to hurt you. I truly didn't" he spoke his voice cracking and his eyes watered towards the end.

"I know Cat. I know"
