Chapter 30 - Chapter 30

Although she didn't start to make her own assumptions to convince her of something untrue, she rather resorted to accept things the way they are. Martha also hadn't adapted to this new way of thinking completely as witnessing a werewolf walking just by means of its rear limbs was hard to digest.

Anyway, she coped with it and prepared herself for even adverse conditions if destiny plans to confront her with any.

Cindy looked behind to watch Martha and upon first sight, she could sense by the behavior that her daughter had picked the right words out of whatever she just said.

Cindy posed a warm smile to Martha to which Martha too responded with a nervous smile.

Cindy turned to the front and despite keeping an eye on the road, rested her head on the seat and closed her eyes for a while.

"I must comfort my daughter as much as I can since we're not too far away now. She must be capable of understanding whatever is going to happen now and must not freak out. Question is ``how do I do this?" Cindy too felt alone on this trip.

She didn't remain on talking terms with her husband throughout this trip and didn't want to speak much with her daughter intentionally which she now regretted.

Suddenly, while her eyes were closed and her head was comfortably resting on the headrest, she felt a hand on the top of her own hand. Realizing this, she opened her eyes and found her husband, Benjamin's hand on top of her own hand.

He understood it was the worst phase of this day that Cindy was going through and that he only can help her out, provided he could only fathom her trouble since he too was a party to it.

He caressed her hand lightly and reassuringly smiled at her. This led Cindy to melt down a bit. She too curved her lips upwards and responded to Benjamin's reassurance for her.

However, her weak smile was nothing but a camouflage to the disturbing thoughts going on in her mind which nevertheless expressed themselves by a tear or two.

Yet both of them understood that they had to improve the atmosphere inside the car and begin to speak to Martha as well as each other casually before the destination arrives.

Cindy cleared her throat and spoke, "Martha, honey, do you remember when I used to come to your room to wake you up for school and ask you to get up? And then sometimes I would almost scream when we are running out of time for it?" a hint of sorrow is evident in her voice.

"I do mommy" said Martha, her voice appearing stronger than before. Martha continued,

"And then I would cry in a sweet tone to resist going to school for that day" Her mother let out a small yet genuine laugh upon remembering those days. "You will go on saying 'please mommy' and lift your blanket up till your head so to avoid even an eye contact with me.

No matter how hard I would try to pull off the blanket but you wouldn't loosen your grip over it and continue to resist" Cindy adjusted her position on the headrest and looked upwards while she reminisced those old and beautiful memories.

"Our little tug of wars would go to such an extent that your daddy would enter the war scene and offer a solution. He would then lovingly ask you to make a decision for whether you've to go to school or not and you would instantly respond in favor of the latter" Cindy smiled as she, for a moment, forgot how distressed the circumstances around her are.

"And do you remember the time some two years back when daddy was getting ready for office and I too was about to leave for school but I couldn't find my socks?" said an animated Martha who had been longing to have a conversation with either of her parents and didn't want to miss this chance.

To this, Cindy let out a laugh and looked at Benjamin who was a bit embarrassed when Martha shared that incident. "I wholeheartedly remember that time Martha.

You've been rummaging through the cupboards to drawers to laundry to even the fridge" Cindy said while she turned around to face Martha with her eyebrows raised and lips smiling.

"Then you must be remembering where I finally did. I found my socks" asked Martha in a sarcastic manner as she took a look at Benjamin's face. Her mother said with her eyes fixated on Benjamin, "Come on Martha.

He wore them mistakenly!" This made both the ladies let out a good laugh.

Seeing both of them having a good time, even Benjamin chuckled a bit which didn't go unnoticed by the two ladies.

They both went silent upon hearing Benjamin laugh a bit. The sheer silence made the only gentleman in the car shift his eyes from the road to either of the two ladies to find out the reason they went into sheer silence.

As soon as he took a quick look of both of them, he saw they were smiling, rather controlling their laughter, while looking at him.

This embarrassed him and he finally let out a good laugh.

All of them then shared laughter.

This was bliss for Martha. All her tormented experiences in today's trips were alleviated by this laughter.

Neither of them now cared of what surrounded them.

Neither Martha nor Cindy nor even Benjamin focused on whether the fire torches were going off or not.

None of them cared where the fire torches would end up now.

Nor did they remember any of the dreadful experiences that they had in the past few hours.

They just focused on the qualities of togetherness and liveliness and bonding, may it be for a brief moment only.

Martha didn't want this moment to end. She wanted to immerse her whole life into it. But alas, her sole thought couldn't change her fate.

After having shared the laughter, Martha looked to the far end. After a certain point, she couldn't find any more fire torches.
