Chapter 6 - Chapter Five: U.A Sports Festival

(~....~ just means something is written down)

While Midnight was giving the speech at the beginning of the festival, Monoma began walking up to Masa but the class noticed and went to block him from getting close enough to bother her which made Kendo walk over and karate chop Monoma causing him to pass out and apologize before walking away. Midnight noticed this and sighed but continued her speech while Aizawa was proud of his students. 'They protect her like she's their little sister. It makes me happy to see she is trusting people again.' He let himself smile slightly at the thought. Midnight finished her pep talk and told everyone that they'd be hearing a speech from the person who scored highest in the entrance exams. Masa looked up at Aizawa and saw him shake his head.

She looked over at the podium and saw the Pomeranian walking up to the microphone. She sighed and put a shield around his mouth, giving him a clear message: Think before you speak. He looked over at her and nodded and she released the shield on his mouth. He sighed and looked around at all the students. "I just want to say....give it your all. 1-A is not going down without a fight." Masa was touched but every single other person that knew him looked at him like he was an imposter.

Present Mic then announced the festivals start after a few minutes to compose herself then began to watch the event wheel spun. It landed on Obstacle Course. "Ah! This one is fun! This is a 4 kilometer race around the outside of the stadium with things you need to pass to move on to the next one." She continued to explain the event before the gate opened and they were set loose. Things went the same as the anime except that Masa came in second place, using her shields as bounce pads and actual shields, while Midoriya got first and everyone else was just bumped down a place for the first event. 'Well done Rhea.'

Midnight took most of the explaining and some of the commentary and Present Mic took care of most of the commentary but Aizawa cut in every so often with commentary, still not happy about doing this since he doesn't like being in the spotlight. 'I believe you will go far. I hope you believe the same.' With Aizawa's last thought, Midnight took over and the wheel began to spin again. "Oh, what will it land on this time~?" The wheel spun for another moment or so before stopping on the Calvary Battle. "Now, I don't want to restrain anyone....yet~" She then goes on to explain how it will work. "Only the top 42 people will be participating in this event. You all will split into teams of two-four and will have points based on your ranking in the race. 1st place will have 10,000,000 points and second will have 205 points and the points will be in increments of 5. You will choose your teammates. You have fifteen minutes to choose, plan and get into formation starting...now!" Everyone began to choose their teammates and Nakama was kind of left behind due to her lack of ability to speak. She looked around and saw a purple haired guy standing on his own before she walked over and tapped his shoulder with a questioning look on her face.

"Who are you?" He asked, not accusing her of anything, and she mouthed the words Nakama Masa. "Alright, what's your quirk?" She made a little shield and showed this to him by throwing a pebble on it. "A shield? Alright. You don't talk much do you?" He looked over as she looked down and away and shook her head but followed him and they made a plan before getting into position with Nakama as the rider and Shinsou as one of the legs Nirengeki Shoda and Mashirao Ojiro as the other legs. "Is everyone ready?" Everyone confirmed this and a few minutes later, after 1-A defended Masa from Monoma again, Midnight started the event and Masa put a shield up around them all and they were off. Halfway into the battle, Monoma finally gets his chance to poke fun at Masa and does so relentlessly until even the people she has teamed up with defend her which makes Monoma and his team begin to walk off but not before Masa steals his headband from behind and puts it around her neck completely unnoticed, keeping their shield up. 'She isn't like the others is she?' Shinsou thought as they continued snagging headbands from behind and the side but never launching a frontal attack. By the time they were done, they had most of the headbands and were in the first place. "Thank you Nakama. It was a pleasure competing with you." Shinsou bowed and reached out to put his hand on her shoulder which she backed away from after bowing. 'What was that about?' He shrugged it off and turned to listen to Midnight again.

"Alright, we are going to take a break to do whatever anyone may need to so be sure to come back for the last event!" Everyone, namely the students and teachers, cheered and went to go get lunch. Masa was on her way but Shinsou stopped her.

"Nakama , you haven't spoken a word. Why?" She looked down and away but didn't verbally answer. "Nakama, are you ok?" She looked over momentarily and nodded but looked sad. That's when it hit Shinsou. "You are mute, aren't you?" She nodded and hung her head. "It's alright. That explains why you are so quiet is all. How did you become mute?" She sighed and looked around for a classmate only to find that they were all gone to lunch and so she just looked at him like how am I going to answer that? He chuckled and nodded as he walked off while she followed. "Fair enough. Were you born mute?" He looked over to see her shake her head. "Was it because of an accident of some kind?" He watched her shake her head again and he tilted his head. "This was planned?" She shook her head for the third time and now Shinsou was completely bewildered. "This wasn't planned, but it wasn't an accident and you weren't born this way.... Did someone do this to you?" She made a so-so motion and looked over at him. "Was it recent?" She nodded again. "How recent?" She signed U.S.J and stretched afterwards. "This happened during the U.S.J incident?" She shook her head. "Before?" She nodded and crossed her arms, still happy she could cross her arms. "I'm sorry you have to deal with that. It doesn't seem like any fun." She smiled and shook her head, trying to agree with him.

"You have to admit though, you are lucky." She turned to him and tilted her head. "Quirks that need someone to talk to you before hand don't work on you because you can't respond. So that's that many more quirks you can't be hit with" He chuckled and shook his head. She tapped his shoulder and looked up at him.

"Hm? What is it?" She looked to her hand and took the prosthetic off. "Did this happen around the time you went mute too?" She nodded and reattached her hand. "I am so sorry. Really, I am." She just shrugged and smiled gently. 'How is she so nonchalant about it!? I'd still be in denial..... She still is in denial. It's why she's hiding them isn't it?' He reached over and hugged her gently. "It'll work out. Don't worry about it. But you have to accept the fact that it happened. It won't get any better until you do." She nodded and hugged him back. "Why do you hide it?" She let go and signed mom and sighed gently before signing freak out as well. He nodded as he understood both what she was saying and the meaning behind it. "Let's go get something to eat before lunch is over hm?" She chuckled and nodded as she was hungry. With that, they went to go get something to eat, talking, laughing and joking around, most of which was Shinsou but she responded in her own ways. They got their lunch and a few people from 1-A joined and Shinsou learned that only Katsuki was....well Katsuki. The next thing they knew, Midnight was speaking over the loud speakers.

"Alright students! Come on back to the field! We are revealing the last event!" Masa looked up and cleared her spot before heading out to the field with Shinsou and those who joined them tailing her. A few minutes later, all the other kids were on the field only to have most of them be told they weren't moving on and were allowed to do the rec games and those who passed, were told to draw lots to decide their first one on one match. The line up was the same but Masa was going against Mina. She looked over at Shinsou who pointed at Izuku and she began to think for a moment and grinned before running over to Shinsou and dragging him off, having a strategy he could use.

"What is it Nakama? Something wrong?" He asked, worried and sighed as she shook her head. "What did you need then?" She got a pad and paper from a random drawer and began to write. Once she was done, she showed him what she had written. ~I have a strategy for you if you want it?~ He looked over and chuckled. "I'd love some insight." She smiled and once again began to write. She showed him her strategy and let him read it over as she crossed her arms, proud and confident in her strategy. "Do you think this will actually work?" She nodded, 100% sure it would work. "Alright, I'll give it a shot." She nodded and smiled while she went back out to go participate in the rec games, already having a strategy for herself for all fights. Shinsou stayed in and mentally prepared himself, studying the strategy he was given.

By the time the rec games were halfway over, Nakama was completely relaxed and in a very good mood, wishing everyone luck in her own way and hugging her classmates and skipping around. "Alright! Once everyone is in their specified areas and Cementoss finishes the ring, the first match will start!" Everyone cheered and the games continued for another little while and soon enough it was time for Shinsou's match for which, Nakama deliberately waited till he was walking out to hug him as a way of wishing him luck in his match before going back to her class.

"Alright, fighters to the ring!" Midnight said and both Shinsou and Midoriya walked to the middle of the ring and without much time, their match started and he began to use her strategy but had his own behind it. He got Midoriya to talk and made him begin to walk out of the ring but this time he followed behind Midoriya and right when he stopped, Shinsou pushed him out of bounds and sent a grateful smile towards Masa who just nodded in response. "Shinsou wins! The next fight will start on just a few moments!" Masa went to go see Shinsou and congratulate him in his victory.

"Thank you Masa. It was all thanks to that strategy of yours that I won." He tried to hug her but only got whacked in the head by her hand. "Ow! Alright alright, my quirk too but you know what I mean!" She smiled and hugged him. "Thank you. I mean it." She just nodded and went to drag him back to watch the fights with her. By then Shoto's match had finished and they were melting the ice. This was what they came back to. "What the hell is with your class and overly powerful people?" She just shrugged and went to the front to watch as the ice melted, making a bunch of mini waterfalls that made her smile. It took an hour or so to completely melt the ice from the ring.

"Alright, next match in two minutes!" Midnight announced and went to her little designated place as ref. 'Damn kids need to be more careful.' Present Mic and Aizawa were shocked by the amount of power in the boy as was most of the audience. A few moments later, Ibara and Denki walked out into the ring and the match began. Denki was saying something but she couldn't quite hear him so she didn't pay much attention to it but she did pay attention to their quirks since she didn't know anyone's quirk aside from Midoriya's. While she was thinking, Denki lost the match and Ibara won. She just shrugged as she didn't see it going much differently. "Shiozaki wins! Next match fighters to the ring!" A girl with light pink hair and a bunch of gadgets took the stage and so did Iida who Nakama sent a smile towards as good luck. He noticed and nodded, before putting on a gadget of his own which Midnight protested until moved by Iida's speech. "Fine, I'll allow it. Only this once." Iida thanked her and the match began. 'Iida will win. Even without the gear he'd win.' She just sighed and turned away as her friend was embarrassed. She then left the area and went down to one of the halls that led to the ring and waited for it to be over. "Iida wins!" She hugged him as he passed her and bowed.

"It's alright Nakama. Thank you for supporting me in the match." He bowed in return before walking away as she stood and waited for the next signal from Midnight.

"Next match fighters to the ring!" Masa then walked out and looked at Midnight then her prosthetics who just nodded as Masa walked into the ring to face Mina. "Fighters ready?" Both showed or said they were and Midnight started the match. Mina tried to land hits but before long, Masa had enough power to use Safeguard as a shockwave big enough to send Mina flying out of the ring. "Nakama wins!" The crowd went wild, the school was shocked, and a lot of the pro heroes went crazy, wanting her to intern with them or go to her work study with them. 'I didn't even have to use my bow staff that round. Welp, people loved that so I guess I can't complain.' She walked off stage and went back to the stands and was greeted by a lot of questions and hugs and praise. The rest of the first round matches went as they did in the anime. The biggest difference is that Izuku didn't tell Shoto that his fire quirk wasn't his father's and that it was his. Tenya beat Ibara and then it was Nakama's turn to fight again. She made a bunch of shards of her safeguard quirk materialize above Tokoyami before making them shatter, causing more light to come into the ring and further weakening Dark Shadow and just used the same move to force Tokoyami out of bounds giving her the win. "Nakama wins! Next fighters to the ring!" Masa left the ring to even more craziness from her class, as she hadn't even shown them half of what she could do as Eijiro went and took the ring along with Katsuki. That match ended with Bakugou overloading Kirishima's Hardening and knocking him out. Nakama had been able to watch the last half of the fight but she was more worried about whether or not Kirishima was ok.

"They're fine Nakama. Kirishima has a strong spirit. He won't let this drag him down for long. He's a fighter, they both are. They'll make it." Midoriya went up to her and tried to comfort her which worked to an extent but she was again worried about the next couple matches.

"Next fighters to the ring!" Bakugou came in and Iida and Shoto left. Their match ended with Shoto as the victor. When Nakama and Bakugou left, she stopped Bakugou from leaving and made him realize she didn't want him holding back before letting him go to the ring. She headed out as well while her classmates were horrified that she wanted Bakugou to go all out against her.

"Just know, Nakama asked for me not to hold back." Bakugou told Midnight who looked at Matsui while she just nodded.

"Alright, fighters ready?" Both students nodded and Midnight gave them the signal to start. "Begin!" Nakama put her guard up and put a dome shaped shield around her and Midnight while Bakugou made a bunch of explosions, making a bunch of smoke and dust billow and heard her phone ring which she checked and answered immediately because she didn't know why the hospital would be calling her.

"Hello? Is this Nakama Masa?" She gulped when she heard the formality in the person's voice. Meanwhile, the smoke was still very thick but just barely beginning to clear finally.

"Yes, this is her. May I ask the purpose of this call?" She was trembling a little and those near her could feel her emotions as she began to push them onto those around her without realizing it.

"Well, we have your mother with us and I'm afraid she doesn't have a lot of time. Are you able to come to the hospital?" The person asked and she felt completely overwhelmed with the same panic she felt when her dad died but this was even worse so almost everyone in the stadium could feel it half as strong as she was.

"Not now. I'm in the Sports Festival. Will it be alright if I came after my match?" She asked, her voice beginning to tremble and break.

"Yes of course, though I'm not sure she will last long enough for you to arrive." She just nodded and sent Bakugou out of bounds and showing Midnight that she was the winner before looking over at her with tears in her eyes as she hung up the phone.

"I-I n-nee-need t-to g-go....p-pl-please...." She begged and got permission from a shocked Midnight before she bolted out of the arena and began to run to the hospital closest to her house. 'Mom, please don't go. I need you. You are the last person I have..... Plus, I'll have to tell Haru and Hiroyuki that you are gone. Please pull through!' She began to cry while she was running and didn't notice the warp gates opening a few feet in front of her.
