Chapter 1 - Hot Spot

Trees passing by at a speed that you can't catch up, a road that goes a mile ahead yet not a single vehicle in sight. My sister wasn't kidding when she said the area here is less populated here. After 3 hours in the car, it's starting to make my feet cramped up. I look at my only elder sister in the driver's seat and her eyes are fixated on the road. She then cranks up the radio as she heard her favorite music on.
I sigh out of boredom. My sister, Masako, must have heard me cause she then instantly lower down the volume. She looks at my side and gave me a small smile.
"You doing alright, Kimiya-san?", my sister ask while shifting her eyes back and forth from the road to me.
"Yeah, I'm doing okay. Just a little cramp up in here. We haven't even take a potty break throughout the ride", blowing a raspberry as I lay my elbow on the side and put my head on my knuckles.
Masako laugh. "Do you need to go to the toilet now?'
"No..."
"Then we don't need to stop. Besides, in about an hour, we'll reach our destination"
I let out a big sigh and look out the window. I understand the purpose of moving from one place to another. It was for both of our safety and to keep our identity hidden. That's right. Our "identity". No, we're not serial killers. Jeez. We're what people call 'Kitsune' in Japanese which translates 'fox spirit' in English. Many considered kitsune a trickster, strife for chaos and destruction of both human and supernatural. That's what we called "Nogitsune", a dark fox spirit.
But that is not entirely true where all fox is bad. You see, kitsune are known to be protector, wise, and powerful. Kitsune are known to have 9 tails right? But you can only gain a tail when you gain an ability. So far, Masako has 8 tails while I have 5. Masako is a lightning fox. You know....the blue one. She's an atmokinesis means she can control the weather, plant manipulation, animal manipulation, able to control the elements, and shapeshift. The only thing my sister couldn't do is the ability to control or conjure electricity or lightning despite that....well she's a lightning fox.

While lil old me, a fire fox, I can move objects, teleport, psychokinesis means I can create an illusion that felt real but it's not and like my sister, I can shapeshift. It's one of the advantages if you don't want people to notice you a lot but if we overuse it, it'll drain us completely. AND no, I do not have the ability to control fire or even conjure up one...YET. While I am rambling here, I didn't realize that we already reach our new home. The house just looks simple. It's a two-story house and behind the house are just trees and leaves.
"Alright, Kim. Let's go and unpack. Then we head for dinner and check out the places that are essential for us," she unbuckles her seatbelt and leaves her seat, out of the car. Every time we move, we had to scout the area, looking for shops that WE NEED only like hardware and groceries. That's why she uses the word "essential". Kid you not, it does annoy my tail sometimes but I understand where she is coming from.
So I exited the car and take a huge stretch until my body just feel relieves. I close my eyes and take a deep breath in. The smell of the damp leaves, the deer and rabbits hopping around in the forest. Even my hearing sense is picking it up around me. The river flowing, the rustling leaves, the spider weaving its web. I open my eyes and look around. Not many people insight, that's for sure which kinda serves the purpose here so yeah. I grab our luggage and head into the house. I can hear my sister's voice, talking on the phone. She ends the call after she's done and turns to me.
"That was the school. Said that you can start tomorrow if you want or start next week, to give you time to settle in"
"Do I really have to go to school? I basically knew the history long before our kind even existed. And I had to endure it by listening to the same thing over and over?"
I don't know why she do this. Kitsune are known to be intelligent and wise. We basically knew everything.
"Well...I didn't want you to be coop up at home all the time while I work. So it's best to put you in school. You're 18, in the age where humans finish up their studies to do the same thing they studied for," as she arranges the stuff in the kitchen on the counter.
I put both my hands on my waist in frustration with arched eyebrows and she returns the 'what' look. She stops what she's doing and looks at me with a serious look.
"Besides, school is the best place to snoop around gossips and news. Of all people, you should know that -"
"Yeah yeah, I know...." I barely made any friends because we always move and second, I choose not to because I didn't want to risk exposing us and Masako knew that either.
I look around the emptiness of each room and floor. I snap my fingers and our things and luggage begin to lift in the air. I wave my hand to specific places where I want our things to be and send our clothes upstairs. Then I wave both my hands from left to right, clearing the dust and webs that's been sticking around and it disappears into thin air.
Masako smiles at my progression. "Welp, you're improving lately with your powers. And convenient of course."
I laugh at her statement. "Well, I'm glad to be at your service" I gave her the sarcasm bow.
Masako laugh at my ridiculousness and said she needs to prepare for her work interview tomorrow and told me to get ready for school tomorrow.
I head up to my room and I must say, it's not so bad after all. The room is able to fit a 2 size cupboard, a queen size bed with a huge window at the side. The view is pretty as well. Vast of the forest with the sun setting down on it. I change into my sleeping clothes and head for bed. I look up at my dull ceiling, planning what I will be doing tomorrow in school.
Another day in a different life...
And darkness is all that's left in my eyes.
