Chapter 5 - Deborah and Barak

After Ehud died, the Israelites sinned against the Lord again.

So the Lord handed them over to Jabin, a Canaanite king who ruled the city of Hazor. The leader of his army was Sisera, who lived in Harosheth of the Gentiles.

Jabin had 900 iron chariots. He oppressed and mistreated the Israelites for 20 years. So the Israelites cried out to the Lord.

At that time the judge of Israel was Deborah a prophet and wife of Lapidoth.

He used to sit under a palm tree between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim. The Israelites go to Deborah to ask for her judgment.

Then Deborah took Barak the son of Abinoam, from Kadesh in Naphtali, and said, "The Lord, the God of Israel, has commanded you to go to Mount Tabor and bring 10,000 men from the tribes of Israel. Naphtali and Zebulun.

The Lord will bring Sisera, the commander of Jabin's army, to fight you at the Kishon River. He has chariots and soldiers, but the Lord will hand him over to you. "

Barak said to Deborah, "I will only go if you come with me."

Deborah replied,

"Come, I will go with you. But the honor will not be yours because Sisera will be handed over to a woman."

So Deborah went with Barak to Kadesh.

Barak gathered the tribes of Zebulun and Naphtali to Kadesh, and 10,000 men went with him. Deborah also went with him.

At that time Heber the Kenite was encamped near Kadesh, near the oak of Zaanannim. He drove away the other Kenites, descendants of Hobab, Moses' brother -in -law.

When Sisera heard that Barak son of Abinoam had gone up to Mount Tabor.

So he mustered his 900 chariots and all his men and set out from Harosheth of the Gentiles to the River Kishon.

And Deborah said to Barak, "Dasdas!

This is the day the Lord will bring you up against Sisera! The Lord is before you! "

.

So Barak went down to Mount Tabor with 10,000 men.

And the LORD smote Sisera, and all his chariots, and all his host, with the edge of the sword. Sisera got out of his chariot and ran.

Barak chased the chariots and the army of Sisera to Harosheth of the Gentiles. And Sisera's army was consumed by the plague.

Sisera fled to the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite, for Jabin king of Hazor and the family of Heber were friends.

Jael went out to meet Sisera and said to him,

"Then to my tent. Don't be afraid. " So Sisera went in, and Jael covered him with a rug.

Sisera said to Jael,

"Give me a drink because I'm thirsty."

Jael opened a skin bottle of milk and gave Sisera a drink and covered him again.

Then Sisera said to him,

"Stand at the door of the tent and if someone comes and asks you if anyone is inside, say no."

Sisera was so tired that he fell asleep. Then Jael took a hammer and a tent peg and went slowly and pushed the peg into the side of Sisera's head. The sting went down to the ground, and Sisera died.

When Barak came looking for Sisera, Jael met him and said,

"Come on! I will show you the man you are looking for. "

So he went in, and Sisera lay dead on the ground with his head pierced.

On that day God gave the people of Israel victory over Jabin king of Canaan. The Israelites kept attacking Jabin until they completely defeated him.
