Chapter 28 - Bell's Lecture

"Don't worry about it too much." A softer voice distracted Arc from the sense of death. "As long as you follow the second rule you won't ever have to worry about that third rule." The rainbow winged woman with closed eyes took a seat on the same block he had seen before. "You will have much more freedom to act than you are thinking as well. We really only care about how you do very specific long term things, pretty much all short and medium term decisions will be up to you."

Arc decided he very much liked Bell. He didn't necessarily hate Sirius, but he was definitely the least favorite of the team members at the moment. He preferred Bell's kindness.

"I think I'll take care of the lecture from here on out Sirius. You aren't exactly in the right state of mind."

"No. This is my project. I want to teach him." Sirius was adamant about this.

Bell wasn't taking his shit though.

"Do you want to ruin this chance just because you can't get over that stupid pride of yours? Just now you completely failed to explain what any of that was. I'm here because I saw you were starting to act up." If her eyes were open they would definitely be staring coldly at him. "How many centuries has it been since you last trained a candidate? I know you often guide them but when did you actually TRAIN one? If my memory serves me correctly it should be the case that you have never done it successfully."

Sirius' ears were drooping at this point. It was true. It had been a few centuries since he had even guided a candidate, it was the nature of his monolith. Even in the distant past when he had tried to train a few for an operation. It ended awfully but he thought it was primarily the climate's fault.

Still, he didn't dare act up in front of her. She was scary when she was mad.

"You have to remember that this time it isn't just you who is going to be raising him. I won't stop you from teaching him in the future but the beginning is vital." Her tone dropped a bit. "I'm sure you know that much right?"

Arc had an issue with being talked about like an object, but he was experiencing the same sense of submission that Sirius was going through. He still liked her, but he was now also afraid of her.

Seeming to suddenly remember Arc's presence, she turned to speak to him, that pressure she emitted earlier was gone. "Stellaris... no I suppose Arc would be better. I will take over your lecture for now. First off, do you have any questions?"

Once again Arc was given the chance for questions. He was prepared this time, but he already gathered what he wanted to know earlier. Now he had some questions that applied to what the adults around him were talking about, including a lot of terms that he didn't know. "What is a Nexus? I've heard that my mother's death was caused by it breaking but I still don't know what it is or why its so important."

He really wanted to know why his mother died. Jamie insisted it was his fault while Zerrin denied it. He still had no clue as to how she died.

"I take it you are interested in the fate of your mother then? Her soul is fine. We made sure to reincarnate her without issue." Bell falsely assumed what Arc was asking. Sometimes her kinder side had a habit of looking too far into things. "As for the Nexus, it is the subject matter that I wanted to teach you about. If you don't have any other pressing questions I take it you will be fine if I tell you?"

Arc, not really having anything too major to ask of her, nodded his head.

"Very well. The Nexus is made up of three main parts. Those parts are the Neidan, Codex, and Nucleus. If you were to generalize what each of those parts represent, they would be the body, mind, and soul, respectively. In the world you are in, and the rest of the Lower Nine for that matter, the ambient world energy is not high enough to support the development of the Codex and Nucleus beyond a certain point. There are very few people with Codices or Nuclei strong or developed enough to use them. Most combat involves strictly the Neidan."

"The fact that the Codex and Nucleus cannot be developed means that the Nexus of cultivators is fairly weak there. The sudden stress of childbirth caused a crack to form in her Nexus. Her Codex was fairly strong for a cultivator of that world, but she was unable to strengthen her Nucleus. When the shell of her Nexus cracked her soul slipped out before it could be sealed." She was trying her best to show sympathy for him, not knowing he wasn't attached to her in the slightest.

"The Nexus is located right behind the upper sternum, close to the heart. It isn't particularly vulnerable to attacks thanks to its nature, but if it cracks, or worse shatters, you will find yourself in major trouble." She made certain to get the severity of a shattered Nexus across. "Protect it. It is your life."
