Chereads / Tales from the wolf pack: Fall of the Red Wolf / Chapter 367 - Mission objective.

Chapter 367 - Mission objective.

After Dean Sunshine's interference, he rose from the table to add to his air of authority while me, Ana and Raven sat at the table. I didn't even get a glimmer of dissatisfaction on his face, but there's no way he could be happy about Raven and Ana's argument.

Seems like he really has a lot of control over his emotions, he really is a strong noble mage and experienced in many areas, he seems to be a very diplomatic guy.

"Apart from Mrs. Ana and the boy, the rest of the team doesn't know why they're here. This team was assembled in an improvised way for two important reasons, we don't know what we're going to face and the second is that everyone here is allowed to access confidential information, even if it seems unusual."

This guy has something against me, not only did he call me a boy but he insisted on saying that he thinks it's weird that I'm here. And from the faces of the two other team members I don't know, they seem to find my presence strange.

"Our first target is an unusual magic beast that was encountered earlier today by the team led by captain Ana, her team was tasked with killing some magic beasts in the forest near the base, but the magic beasts were uncommon. Ana's team has killed almost all the magic beasts leaving only one alive, this magic beast has several unusual abilities making it a very valuable target for research."

"We should capture her doing as little damage as possible, this quest will mainly be performed by Ana who is an earth and wind elemental warrior specializing in defense and Luka who is a curse and shadow elemental mage who specializes in debilitating curses, I don't think it will require the assistance of not one other team member to capture the magical beast."

"This magical beast has the element of life and earth, it seems to have the ability to alter its external appearance and mimic the human voice which usually means little combat power, but unfortunately this is wrong in this case the magical beast appears to be cloaks of great power of battle to a tier three beast, it can devour the vitality of others and petrify its enemies with any kind of wound."

That's just what we've seen, maybe after going back or regressing to her normal form completely she'll show other problematic abilities, after what I've seen this magical beast do, I wouldn't be surprised even if she started spitting fire at me from the fight.

"But it wouldn't be weird for her to show another type of skill so we should all be careful when we locate her, but now comes the second part of this mission and why the team is led by a mage of my level and captain Raven who is a very warrior. above average specialized in hunting human targets to be on that team as well."

"Both my strength and Raven are well above what is needed to deal with the magical beast, our strongest and most problematic enemy during this mission and the one responsible for this magical beast. The kingdom has investigated this region in the past because of the unusual magical beasts that appear in this region for the past few decades, you may not know anymore this region has a very famous history and this made these magical beasts stand out."

Are we really going to hunt down a sacred site that has been hidden for countless decades? This seems wrong for several reasons.

"Unfortunately for many people the investigation proved to be a failure, they did not find anything that linked the magical beasts to the legends of the region or even finding a nest in the swamp, several theories were created and even a few years ago there was a wizard who was very interested in unravel this mystery, but at the end of the day this mystery remains unsolved."

"But today we have a chance to unravel this mystery, our only clue is not just the appearance of an intelligent and special magical beast that should be considered a success in the eyes of any researcher. Several years ago, a movement was discovered by luck in a kingdom close to ours and rumors about the existence of a secret society were confirmed, our second clue."

How fun, let's look for the base of a new secret society that must be full of devotees of an evil or chaotic god. This can go very wrong.

"This secret society goes by the name Sons of the Future, although they call themselves a society they seem more like a secretive, well-disturbed cult without a god as their protective figure or objective to worship. The information we have come from the only base of one of the members of this society that has been discovered until today, the sons of the future has as its supreme objective to trigger the evolution of intelligent species around the world through the use of the life element in many different ways."

I didn't expect this, this secret society seems to be made up of a bunch of mad scientists and not mad cultists. I don't know what I should expect to find in a secret society base, but considering we're hunting a magical beast I wouldn't be surprised to find more magical beasts being used in experiments.

I just hope I don't have the misfortune of encountering an army of abnormal magic beasts in an underground base.

"This society is quite old and the reason it has been hidden for so long is why the very few members in it, by the copy of the tome which serves as a guide for those who initiate into this secret society, say, that the society was founded by nine life element mages who had different specialties. The research between them was shared with their companions and passed on to a few apprentices who should be able to inherit their master's research when their lifetime was up, to very little information about what these nine projects or legacies were, but as far as we know the society has nine leaders in our generation."

"As only nine masters spread across the world it is difficult to find any clues about them, but as all nine legacies have the element of life as their main element the realm has kept a group of investigators and researchers looking for any account of the element of life, from materials, magical beasts, arts and potions anything with the life element that is highlighted a bit and considered a possible clue to this society."

"So, the appearance of a unique magical beast whose life element seems to have many different uses, including the ability to devour the vitality of your enemies is a very important possibility for the realm. I don't need to tell you how much our kingdom can gain from discovering a base or laboratory of this secret society, and how dangerous it is for information that a possible base is in our kingdom's territory. So, all of you shouldn't talk about this mission to anyone, no matter the military rank or power of that person's family."

"The only account of this quest was made by me and will be handed over to the king no matter what the outcome of this quest, even the royal family has no right to know what we find here."

I feel like I've just gotten myself into an even bigger problem than I've ever been in before. Didn't this guy say that it was necessary to have merits and high enough position to know the secret information about this mission? I doubt I have that level of security to participate in this mission, I shouldn't be here!

"After we've capitulated the magic beast, we're going to search this entire forest, swamp and surrounding region for any clues to a secret base, obviously we don't expect a gray core tracker to be able to do that."

I know he's right, but I still believe I'm being insulted as if it's useless because he doesn't like my presence here and not because I'm incompetent. If I were completely useless, I wouldn't be here to track down the magical beast.

"We are going to use a level six magic tool invented by the best minds and artisans in the realm and crafted using many unique high-level treasures. It is capable of detecting the life element that would be present in a laboratory of a member of this society, unfortunately as there must be barriers of different types protecting the base the magic tool must not be able to easily detect the secret base, but if it is in that region let's find her."

"Any doubts or questions? Speak now or be silent forever."

How dramatic, the first hand to go up was Raven's hand.

"I know Ulric's abilities very well and even taking into account the existence of this legendary magical tool. I don't understand why you think we can enter the base of this secret society without one or more runemasters. Even if you have more freak tools capable of neutralizing magic matrices, I still think we looked like a pretty good runemaster to break into a place like this."

A very valid point.

"Not that I'm saying that Luka here or you can't be good rune crafters, I'm pretty sure nobody here is a real high-level runemaster specializing in raiding secret bases."

"I understand your concern, there is not even a runemaster of this type available for this quest. But that doesn't mean we don't have a chance to enter the base or we can protect the base by expecting reinforcements in case we find ourselves being unable to enter the base without risking activating a trap that could destroy the base's contents and secrets."

Now it makes more sense, our group's main objective is to find the base and not completely recover its secrets. It is quite likely that a team made up of the realm's true elite is being assembled and assembled to be sent here, the army must only want us to make sure there is something valuable here before sending a team that can draw the attention of figures which can be troublesome and unwanted.

"But any questions?"

They don't even hear a hand raised anymore, but I felt like I was being focused by the mage and warrior I don't know. They must be deciding if I ask about my presence here.

I can't say I don't understand your curiosity.
