Chapter 1 - Chapter One: Welcome to Lancaster County

March of 1985. It was a Friday. It was the first day that Emily Williams would spend in her new home in Little Britain Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Emily was twelve years old and was in sixth grade. It was a big difference to the city life that she was used to in Newark, New Jersey. She now lived in a small farmhouse, which was surrounded by Amish farms and beautiful terrain. She was going to do homeschooling, instead of going to a new school, because her she and her family thought it would be easier. She went to a public middle school, before she moved, but they decided on homeschooling.
As the movers brought in boxes and furniture from the moving-van, Emily sat on the stoop, at the front door. She watched the buggies and cars, that were traveling down the road. She never saw buggies before, until today. She was always stuck in the city, so this was going to take some time to get used to. She was used to the busy streets, the honking of horns, and the yelling of angry drivers. It was quiet here. It was peaceful.
Emily loved the beautiful scenery, that surrounded her new home. The acres of land and the beautiful farms. She was going to love her new home. She liked this better than the city, believe it or not. She disliked the city life. She hated hearing honking at midnight and waking up, because of this. She no longer had to deal with that, because it was so quiet. It was home.
Emily's mother, Samantha, approached her and sat down next to her, on the stoop. Emily continued to look out at the scenery and Samantha looked at the scenery, as well. "You like it here, do you?" Samantha asked. "I do, it's beautiful," Emily replied. Samantha smiled, while she continued to look at the scenery. "I knew you would like it. It's gorgeous here."
They continued to look at the beautiful scenery, until Emily's mother stood up from the stoop. Emily looked up at her mother and watched her, as she walked inside the house. Emily sighed and stood up, as well. She walked inside and saw the movers placing the couch down, in the living room. Emily walked up the stairs, that lead to the bedrooms. After Emily walked up the stairs, she turned left and walked into her bedroom. Boxes were piled, so she decided she was going to start unpacking.
Emily opened a box that was titled "clothes". Her clothes were neatly folded. She began to take out the clothes, from the box, and place them into the white bedroom chest. She unpacked for about an hour, until she was tired. After she finished filling the chest, she left her room. She walked downstairs and saw her parents paying the movers.
At 5 PM, her parents decided they would take a drive and get traditional Pennsylvania Dutch food, for dinner. Emily and her parents never had Pennsylvania Dutch food before. This was something new for them. Takeout wasn't available where they lived, so they had to either cook dinner at home or go out for dinner. They arrived at the restaurant, about ten minutes later. At dinner, Emily and her parents chatted, while they ate their dinner. They were happy and the ride home, after dinner, was enjoyable.
That night, Emily was getting ready for bed. Before she went to sleep, she went over to the window and looked at the star-filled sky. Emily thought about her new life, away from the city. She thought about that she was being homeschooled. She thought about everything. "Hopefully I make some friends," Emily said to herself. Then, Emily walked away from the window, got into her bed, and went to sleep.
