Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: Meet the Family

Emily and Elizabeth talked for a while, before leaving the schoolhouse. After leaving the schoolhouse, Emily offered Elizabeth a ride home and Elizabeth obliged. They got into Emily's car and Emily drove Elizabeth home. It was about a five minute drive away. Emily couldn't believe how large of a property Elizabeth had.

Elizabeth lived on a large dairy farm and their farmhouse was rather big. Emily drove up the driveway and parked her car. "Would you like to come inside?" Elizabeth asked, while looking at Emily. "Sure," Emily responded. They got out of Emily's car and went inside Elizabeth's house.

Elizabeth's three daughters were doing chores around the house and her sons were doing work in the fields, with Elizabeth's husband, John Fisher. Elizabeth's eldest daughter, Sarah, was the first to meet Emily. Sarah was twelve years old. Emily and Elizabeth walked into the kitchen, where Sarah was sweeping the floor. Sarah paused from sweeping the floor and looked at Emily and Elizabeth. It was odd that an Englishman was in their house, Sarah thought, but she did not want to be rude.

"Hallo, how are you?" Sarah asked, while looking at Emily. "I am doing fine. So, you must be Sarah," Emily said. Sarah nodded, with a smile. "Ja, I am," Sarah responded. Then, Elizabeth's other daughter, Martha, walked into the kitchen and saw Emily and Elizabeth. Martha was eight years of age. "Hallo, who are you?" Martha asked, while looking at Emily, with an eyebrow raised. "I'm Emily, and who are you?" Emily asked. "I'm Martha," Martha responded.

Emily talked with Martha, Elizabeth, and Sarah for a while, until the youngest daughter, Erma, walked into the kitchen. Erma was six years old. Erma didn't say anything to Emily, but just looked at her. "Hi, and you must be?" Emily asked Erma. "I'm Erma," Erma responded.

The front door then opened. Elizabeth's two sons and her husband walked inside the house. Her sons and husband then walked into the kitchen, where they were greeted by Elizabeth, Emily, and the three daughters. Elizabeth's sons and husband introduced themselves to Emily. Elizabeth's oldest son, Jacob, was fifteen. Levi, Elizabeth's second oldest son, was thirteen. Finally, Noah, who was Elizabeth's youngest son, was five.

She then met John, Elizabeth's husband, who was 41. John was a rather nice fellow, but was a very hard worker. She learned that John had helped built the new schoolhouse and several other buildings in the area. John talked to Emily for a while, getting to know her. He didn't seem to care that an Englishman was in his home and that was a good thing. John and Elizabeth then decided that they wanted Emily to stay for dinner, so she did.
