Chereads / Prince of Olympus / Chapter 48 - Recruitment!!

Chapter 48 - Recruitment!!

An hour had passed and Jennifer started to calm down. Sky had taken a seat next to her and was watching the clouds above when he felt a weight on his shoulder. He looked to his left and was met by a plume of black hair. The sniffling had stopped and dead silence filled the large open space. He turned his attention towards the grave wondering who had buried the giant and how long ago they had done it.

"Feeling better?" He asked after a few more moments.

Jennifer nodded, still keeping her head glued to his shoulder.

"Can I ask you something?" He continued.

"White-haired tribe?" Her voice, barely audible and small.

Now it was his turn to nod as he did so.

"They're an old tribe that's been around since the beginning of humanity," She explained, her voice still soft and small, "They worship Hera, one of the gods that didn't take a throne on Olympus..."

"I see..." Sky murmured.

Jennifer lifted her head off his shoulder and looked at him. Suddenly Sky was hit with a wave of awkwardness, never having someone except his mother look at him so intensely.

"The reason why they're called the white-haired tribe is because of their characteristic white hair and brown eyes..." She said as she touched Sky's white hair.

Sky stiffened as she did so, tensing his body and sending a shock of pain throughout it. "GAH!" The sound escaped his mouth as Jennifer quickly pulled her hand away.

After a few moments the pain receded as he looked back towards the grave. "Where are they now?" Sky asked.

"Probably at their village..." She answered.

"Are there more?" Sky asked.

"More what?" She looked at his bright red eyes.

"Tribes." Sky said, lost in thought.

"Yes, there's quite a few that didn't fit in and decided to live alone." She answered, unable to look away.

Suddenly, Sky pushed himself off the ground and patted the dirt off. He looked at the grave ahead once more before looking down at Jennifer and offering her a hand. She gently took it, still pushing herself off the ground to prevent any more pain from hitting Sky. The two started walking back quietly, not saying a word.

When they had arrived at Hephaestus' house Kronos and Prometheus were sitting in the living room as Hephaestus cooked in the kitchen.

"Back from our date are we?" Prometheus gave a cheeky smile to Jennifer.

"It wasn't a-" She was interrupted by him again.

"Ah, I don't really care," He shooed away her words. "What's important however is that good ol' Heph boy here made us a traveling orb."

Hephaestus snorted in the back.

"So as soon as we're ready, we can head back!" He smiled.

Kronos froze. "WE?!" He quickly turned to Prometheus.

"Of course, you don't think I'd miss a family reunion now do you?" He smiled deviously.

"You're not coming!" Kronos leaped out of the couch.

"Fine, I guess there's nothing I can do then." Prometheus shrugged his shoulders in defeat.

Kronos froze once more. "What are you planning?" He said quickly.

Prometheus looked away and started whistling as he crossed his legs. "Just wondering if you can handle him by yourself..."

Kronos realized what he meant and started grinding his teeth and groaning. "FINE!" He finally said as he fell back into the couch, defeated and deflated.

"Great!" Prometheus clapped, "Tomorrow sounds good right?"

No one spoke. "Tomorrow it is!" He said cheerfully as he leapt out of his seat.

Hephaestus walked out with the food and the group ate together, and afterwards Sky made his way back upstairs and fell asleep in a matter of seconds.

It was late into the night when Sky woke up. On the side of his bed was Jennifer, sleeping with her head on the mattress and against the far wall was Kronos, breathing loudly as he slept. The drowsiness had worn off and his body ached from laying down, making him want to go for a walk.

Quietly and moving as little as possible, he crawled off the bed and made his way downstairs where he could hear Hephaestus still working away in the forge. Sky smiled and relaxed before walking through the door to the only place he knew of.

He was surprised to see someone else there when he reached the grave. Sitting down and looking at the stars was Prometheus.

"And to what pleasure do I owe this visit?" He asked, still staring at the stars.

"Mind if I join you?" Sky ignored him and took a seat next to him before he could respond.

"You really learn quickly don't you?" Prometheus smiled, seeing Sky already pick up on his habits.

"Beautiful aren't they?" Prometheus said.

Sky nodded as he stared at the purple sky above. There was a slow gradient going from a deep purple in the middle to black along the horizon. Through what seemed to be the middle of the sky was a stream of stars, all so small and so white. Every now and then, along the stream there would be some that had tried to escape and froze midway while the others watched in groups from afar. The sight was relaxing and soothing, almost making him feel like a normal twelve year old.

"You don't really get to see such a beautiful night sky everywhere..." Prometheus continued, "It's a real shame."

The two quietly watched the stars as they glittered and twinkled.

"You buried Striker didn't you?" Sky asked.

There was a brief silence before Prometheus answered. "I did."

Another brief silence filled the air. "It's kinda creepy when you answer so clearly..." Sky murmured.

Prometheus stiffened. "Kids these days can be so harsh..." He sounded defeated.

"...Thank you..." Sky said.

"It was the least I could do." Prometheus nodded.

They stared at the stars some more, taking in the peaceful night to the fullest.

"Why don't you join us?" Sky asked.

"I am." Prometheus responded.

"When we go to fight Porphyrion." Sky continued.

Prometheus snorted and smiled. "That is your fight, not mine nor my brothers." He responded.

"That's true… but..." Sky started.

"You won't be there to fight the giants..." He turned to Prometheus.

Prometheus looked at him in turn and smiled.

"You'll just be there to make sure the injured don't die." The two said in unison.

Sky looked startled as a giant grin appeared on Prometheus' face before he started laughing.

"ShiShiShiShiShiShiShi!!!!" He laughed heartily.

Sky smiled as he looked back at the stars above. Prometheus continued to laugh for a few more moments before wiping the tears from his eyes.

"Aaah," He said as he did so, "Some things never change..."

Sky smiled as a warm feeling swelled in his chest.

"I'll think about it..." Prometheus turned and looked at him, a genuine, warm smile sitting on his face.

Sky smiled back in return as he nodded.

"Now, go back to sleep, we have a long day tomorrow." He said as he ruffled Sky's hair and watched him stand up and leave.

His attention returned to the starry, night sky. "Who would've thought that a demigod would try to recruit me not once but twice in my lifetime… right Striker?" He said as he looked towards the mound of dirt..

Prometheus took in a deep breath and slowly let it out, being reminded of all the times he had spent with the first half-bloods and Striker. He smiled as his gaze fell to his feet while he covered his face with his hand and closed his eyes.
