Following the conclusion of presentation by Asako Zelezinska, all participants started leaving the hall, exiting through different route than before - yet another safety measure put in place for those who were to be involved in what they called the biggest project in humanity's history.
Without a doubt, what they saw and heard could be considered a hot topic by media, therefore organizers expected journalists to stay around, and try to get something out of those who agreed on NDA.
Using different route was one of the solutions they put in motion to avoid contact with media. Obviously, it could not be considered enough, and if anyone thought this was the case, they would have been plainly stupid.
John left the site accompanied by Ryan and Keira. He expected Keira to tag along since she asked for that before, but colonel McRae clearly imposed on him. Given the circumstances, Marlow felt relieved to have agreed on spending more time with miss Evergate. Colonel clearly had some business with John, but if it was anything confidential and military-related, such topic could not be discussed with civilian. Of course, secure channels could be established with direct, non-verbal transmission, however, it still required focus from involved parties.
While major felt suspicious about higher ranked officer, whom he just met, colonel McRae seemed calm and unbothered, as if his only intention was to spend time with others and relax. Still, John wondered why would he choose to tag along with him. Given the rank, and knowledge about high security project like this one, he surely had connections.
Difference in their social standing became clear once they did not go with the main crowd, but were led by security directly to underground parking, where Ryan's private car was waiting. And the car colonel McRae owned was not something one could easily get. First of all, to get your own car, here in Tokyo, one had to go through many procedures, but to be allowed to use a vehicle equipped with combustion engine was a completely different case. Of course, it was nothing like engines from twenty-first century, and - as every classic car nowadays - also had modern propulsion, needed for flying when required, however, it would still produce fumes when driving on wheels.
- John, what do you think? - Ryan asked, obviously boasting - Pretty, isn't it?
- It's nice, it's first time I see original Albion Avalon with my own eyes.
John, being a technology geek, knew about this car, but coming upon fully operational version without mods was really hard. Even die-hard automotive fans could not help it and modified their classic cars following global restrictions concerning acceptable propulsion for private transportation. The taxes one had to pay to continue driving a non-modified car would often exceed the car's worth.
- Still, I'm wondering if we should be really driving that? Aren't the whole project needed because we made Earth into what it is right now?
Marlow looked at Keira, who did not say a word for some time now. Her eyes were sparkling as she kept ogling the car. Knowing she was British, he could not blame her for reacting like that over a car - it was the last combustion engine car built in UK. There was none other released afterwards, hence the name Avalon.
- Don't worry, John. It may look like that, but the original engine is disabled - colonel McRae explained - I just wanted to keep it intact. It is powered by an electromagnetic unit combined with fusion cell. Come on, get in. We can go grab something to eat and go back to the hotel.
Avalon had oldstyle doors, sliding up once touched, or rather after making a hand gesture. Miss Evergate seemed to have fun by simply opening the door, and she was the first one to get in. As most of people, she seemed to like such stuff.
John, on the other hand, was thinking about how mechanics managed to keep original engine intact, though disconnected, and fit in a hybrid unit alongside. He could not see any adjustments in the car body, so the most realistic scenario was to use trunk as a new engine chamber. Once he asked Ryan about that, colonel confirmed it was the case. In this setup, polarity played the major role - fusion cell only provided energy for magnet spirals of opposite polariy, which would cause metal rings to rotate and move pistons. Of course, pistons still required lubrication, so special, organic oils was required.
- To be honest, I'm missing the sound of the old engine - said colonel McRae as he started the car - You see, this car belonged to my great-grandfather, who bought it straight from the dealer, so it's like our family heirloom, passed from father to son.
If Marlow remembered correctly, the last year of producing Avalon was 2067, and since they had 2293 now, this vehicle was 226 years old. Quite a result for a car, though he knew some people still kept Mustangs from 20th century, but rather havely modified now.
While thinking about the time that passed since this vehicle was produced, John started wondering about colonel's age. Without a doubt, Ryan McRae had to be over 100 years old.
- Colonel, I've been thinking, how old are you? - John did not know if Keira read his mind, but she asked the exact question thay bothered him - You say your grandfather bought this car back in 21st century. This itself is amazing, but it seems you are one of those who don't look their age.
McRae smiled.
- You can call me Ryan, I'm off duty now. As for your question. Well, it's hard to guess someone's age nowadays, right? Medicine improved a lot since 21st century. My great-grandfather, who was born back then, lived for 120 years, while my grandfather passed at the age of 158, so nearly 40 years difference over several decades, and my father is still around at 181. As for me, I will be 140 this year.
Neither Keira nor John asked for such detailed explanation, including a bit of genealogy, but colonel McRae looked as a very talkative person - a bit too open and somehow eccentric, for Marlow at least.
- Medicine really works wonders in today's world - Ryan continued - Given you can afford that, of course. You are still at the age when you don't need that, but for me regular treatment is the key. Sure, there are those who want to save money or limit the time needed for treatments, so they go for cybers, corrct? I also know that's becoming a hit among young people now, even removing healthy organs get an artificial one with fancy functions. First time I saw these in military, you'd get one if you lost one in combat, or in accident for a civilian. And now, they purposedly cut off their legs so they can - for example - jump higher, while gangsters can easily change their hands into weapons. It's crazy where all of this is going.
Marlow, who was looking through the window this whole time, turned his head to colonel.
- So, is that your reason for participating in this project? Are you tired of this planet?
Ryan did not respond immediately, lost in thought for a while.
- It's not that simple. Sometimes, I do feel lethargic, that's for sure. My reason for going is much more selfish. I want to do something important, and be remembered.
John was not surprised. Among all those people who joined the project, there would be many different reasons for participating, and personal gain of any kind seemed most common to him. After all, the world they lived in was money-driven, and money meant success. Major Marlow was no different in his life approach in his current job until now, although he felt satisfied and did not think this whole project is something he needed.
John still did not fully comprehend the new situation he got into. Signing up for the expedition could be considered a kind of pledge, and backing off would hurt him really bad. Still, declining as someone from military could easily destroy his whole career - Ryan helped him remember that.
- It's been bugging me since we've met, but why are you spending your time on me, on us?
Colonel suddenly turned into a small alley. This surprised both his companions.
- What was that about? - asked John.
- I'll tell you in a moment.
McRae sped up a bit, and couple of minutes later, they have arrived at a parking lot of a small restaurant.
- Here we are - he announced after turning of the engine - I've booked a private room, so nobody should disturb us.
To every question Ryan was asked, he simply replied "We'll talk inside."
Once they entered the restaurant, a waitress led them to a spacious private room with Western style furniture.
- This is the best restaurant with American food around - colonel informed his companions - I've been regular here since getting to Japan due to the project. I was assured we won't be bothered by anyone. Please, order whatever you want, it's all on me.
Though John much appreciated a free meal at such a nice restaurant, and same seemed to be the case for Keira, both of them exchanged confused looks.
- Ryan, if we are to eat in peace, let us know what's happenigng here - said Marlow - What's all this conspiracy for? Someone was tailing us?
Colonel has already started browsing the menu as the questions were asked.
Table was not only used for serving dishes, it also had a built-in interface for placing orders. Of course, they could connect with their implants, but due to security concerns many people became reluctant to use implants for such actions in recent years, hence the reappearance of this technology introduced 200 years ago.
McRae raised his head and finally spoke to his companions.
- Yes, we were being tailed, that's a fact - he started with confirming - I'm sure our security was following us, but I'm not really concerned about them. All those people were notified where I was going so they'll still get here soon. However, I know that other groups are sticking their noses in matters related to the expedition, and I'm watching out for those people.
- Why would they be interested in John or me? - asked Keira - It's not like we are considered for high positions withing the team. Or am I wrong?
Colonel smiled. In his opinion, being unaware of your own standing was naive. There was no place for courtesy in this world.
- Based on materials you've worked on so far, you should understand better, professor Evergate - Ryan sighed - The crew won't be a single body, it'll rather be a mix of people from different regions, different origins, different organizations. In your own opinion, you may seem insignificant in this huge group, but depending on the information someone is looking for, you may be considered a key person. Though, in your case, it seems you don't have high expectations about your position. Still, we are not here to discuss this matter, so I'll leave it for another time. Let's place orders, and then we can continue.
This restaurant had actual meat. Given how the economy changed in recent decades, getting this kind of ingredients was surely hard. Colonel surely had a nose for luxury items. Both John and Keira hesitated about their orders, but McRae encouraged them with a smile. Once the order was placed, he continued the explanation.
- Ok. So the crew will be several thousands strong, and we still don't have the final number that's going to be required. Everything is being estimated. However, what we know for sure is that we will be getting corporate agents, and corporations always look for opportunities to gain as much as possible, whether it's about information or resources. Since the military was tasked with keeping everything together during the mission, I'm planning to set a core team for it to succeed. And both of you are among key people I want on board. I was rather lucky to get you both at the same time.
They heard someone knocking to the door, and the waitress entered, bringing their food. Ryan waited for her to leave before continuing.
- You are new to this project, and may still not fully understand its scope, its importance. Due to that, many powerful people are looking our way. We need to be extremely careful for it to be an actual expedition instead of a power scuffle.
He took a bite of burger and a sip of beer. John, who was processing all the information he gained throughout this day while listening to colonel, understood by now in what kind of mess he got.
- Ok. So this expedition gonna have a lot of people with conflicting interest, and you need to make sure nothing breaks. But what exactly do you want from us?
- That's right - Keira joined in, nodding - John is already in military, so he responds to you regardless. As for me, what exactly can I do? I still don't quite get what's exactly my role in this whole undertaking, and the only things I can think about I could help with are archeological excavations, if any are needed, and maybe attempts to understand alien language, if they had such in any form.
McRae managed to eat the whole burger by the time his companions shared their thoughts.
- Your respective jobs are not playing the major role here- he said, taking on another burger - We wouldn't have this talk if my people didn't run a thorough check on each of you. Your profiles are matching what Earth Army needs to oversee this project, including the most important requirement: absolutely no connections to corporations - Ryan put away his burger - Listen, everyone who joined today, every person at this conference, is being under surveillance from now on, but only until being sent to Orbital Ring. Once they go there, number of people involved will be limited to those directly related to the project, and I won't have resources to spare to keep everything in check. That's why I need people who can keep an eye on things wherever I cannot.
Finally, it was a bigger picture of what was going on. Various parties working on the project, towards a common goal, while also following their own agenda. As usual, governments planned to sell this as an idealistic story about saving humankind, hiding the true colors of standard fight for power and money.
- So, you are basically telling us to spy for you? - that's how it looked to John.
Colonel quickly shook his head.
- By no means, John. Just tell me if something bad, potentially dangerous might happen. If you see or hear something concerning, let me know then. I don't wany you to spend time on silly things like checking someone. Honestly, you won't have time for that. Also, be sure to do everything you deem necessary for this expedition to be beneficial to humanity.
- If it's only about stuff like that, you didn't have to ask - Keira seemed tired - I think anyone would do that if they had a bad feeling.
Ryan smiled.
- If it was that easy, I wouldn't have a need for such talks.
- Beneficial to humanity is rather subjective matter - said John, taking a bite of his steak - But I get the general idea.
They have spent the rest of the evening on chit-chatting and eating delicious food, before returning to the hotel.
As colonel received an information about journalists flocking around the building's entrance, he chose an alternative entrance, specifically prepared for situations like this. Owing to hotel's security systems, they successfully got directly to parking lot, and reached their respective apartments from there.
Once they split with McRae, John and Keira were left alone inside the elevator. Their rooms were on the same floor, though on completely different ends of the corridor.
- That was sure one hell of a tiring day - said Keira, yawning - Travel by a train, several hours in the hall, listening about things I have no idea about, and then colonel talking about conspiracies, spying.
- And imagine this is only just a beginning - John also felt fatigued - We still have one day of conference left, and later we are going to Orbital Ring.
The sound miss Evergate let out seemed a bit like crying. She was not facing John, so he could not see her face.
- Do you think they will give us at least couple of days to stay at home?
When Keira asked him, Marlow realized he did not think about it until now.
- I hope so. I didn't pack enough clothes. And I need to make preparations. I doubt anyone could leave just like that. What would happen to our homes when we return...
It has now just hit him. If they have to spend time before departure on Orbital Ring, then for how long will they be away? They could return in the next century!
- It finally got to you, right? - Keira was facing him now, with a sad smile - I also didn't think about that back in the hall. I was too curious and found myself caught in the moment.
- So, are you having second thoughts?
Miss Evergate leaned on the cold, metal wall.
- And who wouldn't? Ok, maybe someone who has nothing to lose, or has a really bad situation... What I mean is, this world's really in poor shape, but still... It's the place where I grew up, where I have friends, though not many have time nowadays. It feels surreal now. Still, I can't imagine myself just letting such opportunity go. I mean, only selected people can participate... And I'm really interested in this alien civilization now. If we come upon their language, I'd love to have chance for studying it.
This was the very first time Keira mentioned this very topic when talking to John. Sure, she did speak about her work, and not specifically about something connected to aliens, but there was something else Marlow wanted to bring up for some time now.
- When we talked about this earlier, you've mentioned that it's not like aliens speak Greek or Latin. However, what was the thing Barszcz brought up? What kind of text did you translate for him?
Elevator reached their floor and the door opened. Both John and Keira went out, and were about to go their respective ways.
- I'm surprised you were actually listening to what I was talking about during dinner - she smiled - Many people just pretend they enjoy the conversation, doing this just for company. I would gladly tell you a bit more about my work, but we need to get ready for tomorrow.
- I can accompany you for a bit more - offered John - That way, we can talk a bit longer.
- If that's fine with you - Keira noded - So, about your question. I couldn't tell what he meant back then, but I've been thinking about it and there is one work I suspect, based on what you told me.
Marlow did not interrupt, simply waiting for her to continue.
- I might have mentioned Greek and Latin, but I work on several other languages, and one of most interesting languages for me is Sanskrit. And there was one such text I got couple of years ago. It appeared to be a bit like Vedic Sanskrit at first, but the more time I spent on it, the more difficult it seemed. At some point, I even found myself pretty lost, but going through some other old texts I had from Indo-European group, I've managed to put up a key that allowed to create a translation, though it felt rather raw. Still, I think the meaning was translated properly. The text was mentioning star travels. Back then, it looked to me like one of those myths, talking about godly powers, and hearing your explanation about black holes made me realize this text covered the topic of space tunnels. Now, when I think about it, it seems surreal something like this was in such an old text, as if people from thousands of years ago knew about space travels.
- And you think this bit helped out Barszcz and Pavlov with their work? For a moment, I thought you may mention what you got was actually an alien language.
Keira laughed.
- Don't be silly. Of course, we cannot exclude the possibility, but if that was the case, it would've been big discovery. We would've to rewrite a large part of humanity's history.
- But isn't knowing that people from ancient times might have seen such high technology a pretty big deal already?
- Of course, it is. However, it's not like I know this for sure. It's just a speculation. I don't think anyone would treat this seriously based on a single text, John.
Marlow recalled some works he happened to read back during his school days.
- I remember reading a book about advanced civilization living on Earth thousands of years ago. I heard even some weapons of mass destruction created in twentieth century was actually a result of studying some old texts by scientists.
They have just arrived at miss Evergate's room, but she did not unlock the door yet.
- Though it's really interesting, and would've been wonderous history, it's still considered a conspiracy theory - she was completely frank - I think getting a chance to work on alien language is more feasible and has a higher chance of success.
- If that's so, how do yo work on deciphering a language you've never seen before? Do you think it will be possible?
- It's not like the language has to be similar to ours if we want to learn it, John. There are many techniques that can be used to work on a completely new language, though the more complex it is and the less clues we have, the longer the whole process will take. Besides, I don't expect they will have only a single person doing that. But still, there's no point in thinking about that now, it's too soon.
Keira covered her mouth as she yawned.
- Sorry, John. I'm really tired. Let's leave this topic for another time, when we both know more. Have a nice sleep.
- Sure, you too.
Marlow waited for miss Evergate to close the door to her room before going to his own. While Keira seemed to have everything sorted out by now, and ready for participation in the expedition, John was actually the one who kept having second thoughts.
Initially, when boarding the train, Marlow expected this to be yet another technoloy effort, like developing a new type of engines for space ships, but not what actually happened there. Learning about ongoing investigation of the planet and preparations being in place for an actual mission to another planet came as a big surprise. Something like this was sure to turn your life upside-down.
As a single, lone person, John did not have to worry about leaving family or significant other. Still, he was wondering how the schedule will look like, how much time will they have to spend on Orbital Ring, and when they will depart.
Both Ryan and Keira seemed kind of excited about this opportunity to have their names recorded in history. However, John was not really an attention seeker, rather more of a type hoping to live an easy life now that he had a good and stable job. He like his current life, but the problem was he could lose a lot by changing his mind, so there was no going back.
Fortunately, all the things he did not knew at the time were to be discussed during the second day of the conference. Hoping for answers, and seeing no point in dwelling on these concerns of his, Marlow finally reached his room and went straight to bed, falling asleep while fully clothed.
***
A huge uproar woke John up. It was hard to tell what actually happened, but as alarms went off, he knew it could not be any kind of a stupid joke, and immediately started preparing to leave his room.
Emergency protocols stated that hotel clients had to go out their rooms and head towards the dedicated exit as soon as they hear the alarm. They are not supposed to take anything with them, since luggage could potentially get in the way, but Marlow did not feel good about leaving his stuff unattended in such a situation, especially since there were no signs of fire and smoke, and couple of things he had in his case might be useful if he got in danger.
After gathering all important belongings, and it take maybe a minute at most, John opened the door to bump into Keira, who just arrived, looking really scared.
- Did you hear that? - she asked, shaking.
To major, who did not see or hear anything aside from the alarm, it seemed to be a bit exagerrated reaction coming from miss Evergate.
- Yeah, those alarms are really noisy - he nodded, agreeingly.
Miss Evergate gave him a confused look.
- I didn't mean that. Didn't you hear gunshots and the explosion?
It would have been an overreaction to give an evacuation signal without any signs of fire or smoke, but Marlow did not expect something like gunfight in this area.
- I woke up after hearing people making noise outside. I couldn't hear any gunshots, but maybe I was too deep in sleep? Still, it seems weird to me. If there's someone dangerous, armed, why would they have us leave? I'd say staying indoors is much safer. You sure you heard someone shooting?
Keira gave him a serious look.
- Listen, you may think of me as some kind of rich girl, who does not know how bad the world is, but I've seen a lot in my life and know how gunshots sound. And I tell you, I'm sure it's what I've heard.
John had no reason to argue.
- Honestly, I'd prefer a fire than someone wreaking havoc by shooting guns. If that's the case, we should stay inside...
Once he said that, door leading to Marlow's room suddenly closed. He tried to open them, but the interface was not responding.
- Damn, the power got cut - he concluded on a glance - No point in trying to break it up now. Let's go through emergency route, but be cautious.
Though this was never something John felt comfortable with, he took out his military kit, including an armor and two weapons - so-called ripper blade for melee and ranged electric gun. Since major wanted to stay true to his ways, both weapons were something allowing to take the opponent down without killing them, though deadly blows were possible should there be no other way.
They both rushed to the closest staircase to find out the route got blocked there too. A rather short, blond-haired woman was trying to disable the door lock as they have arrived.
- Fuck this shit! - the woman was screaming in Russian - We are locked for good! - she said after noticing the two.
Marlow, though working on large scale projects in recent years did not forgot his basic abilities. He might have become a technology scientist, however, he was still an all-rounder when it came to practical skills, including hacking.
Contrary to his room's lock system, this one had power so it could be unlocked with a little bit of tinkering.
- There's no point - Russian woman sat on the floor, resigned - The door has insta-lock.
This was actually a very useful information. Learning the type of system applied in the door saved them a couple of minutes at least. Still, while John started working on disabling the lock, he could not help but feel somehow uneasy - this floor was quite vast and most of the rooms were occupied according to what he learned at reception desk, so why only three of them were out? Either they left much too late or other people got locked inside.
When major was thinking this through, both Keira and Russian woman started coughing. Marlow's focus immediately shifted to this strange behavior and he suddenly realized what was happening as he felt a weird sensation in his throat - a gas, poisonous gas.
- Slow your breathing and take out masks from the emergency box! - he quickly ordered both women, pointing at his bag - It's likely a poison. We need masks, and quick!
The very moment miss Evergate passed him a mask, John managed to open the door leading to a staircase, but what he saw there was a gloom sight of bodies lying on the floor. Even though it was not thick, gas could be seen clouding inside, and they had over twenty floors to get outside.
Marlow gave a hand sign to Keira to follow him, however, she stopped by the body lying closest to the door, checking the pulse.
- Can't we do anything for them?
- Without knowing what kind of gas it is, we'd only expose ourselves to danger.
When explaining the hard truth to Keira, John was finally able to get a proper connection for his PEC. It felt weird for so many systems being down and no safety bots deployed in this kind of situation, it looked as if someone took the control over the whole building.
Obviously, he first reached to local services, learning they are aware of the situation, and then contacted colonel McRae, who was already on the site.
John, alongside Keira and Russian woman were quite fortunate to be escorted by military once they reached the lobby. From what they have heard, casualties were many.
Following safe escape from the building, the blonde Russian woman introduced herself as Svetlana "something" and thanked Marlow for the help, before going her way. As for major and his companion, miss Evergate, they were escorted to cordoned off area, where Ryan was waiting. The very moment colonel glimpsed a sight of them, he told the people around to leave.
- I'm glad to see you safe - he said, with grim-looking face - I've already organized another place for you to stay, one with better security. Sorry that I can't spare you more time, but there's quite a big commotion here.
John exchanged looks with Keira.
- So there's nothing you can tell us? Ryan, you sure know how many dead people we saw there?
Marlow was the one who asked the question. The hotel was booked by organizers of the conference, therefore many of the guests were participants.
- John, it's not the time for that, really - McRae sighed - I told you about curent state of affairs, but I really don't know any details now. It was an inside job, someone from the hotel staff took over the main control room, though we have no idea on whose orders. For now, your safety is more important.
An attendant entered the room, leading both John and Keira to the car awaiting at the back. The driver was a sergeant from the military, who saluted Marlow without a word, and started the car.
As the car was driving through the street, numerous police and military cars passed by, all going towards the hotel.
- Good thing we made it out - Keira was looking through the window as she said that - How many do you think died there?
Major shrugged, since he tried to focus on getting them out safe back then, counting victims was not something he could bother about.
- I have no idea. And it will be better for us not to think about it.
Miss Evergate had a gloomy look on her face.
- I knew corps can be ruthless, but this... John, it's been only a day and so many deaths. How are we going live through the next couple of years?
Marlow spent quite a bit of time thinking about upcoming years so far. The thing is, he did not really consider the possibility of dying. Of course, Ryan warned them about the mission and involvement of various parties, but John did not expect to be involved in this kind of event, and while still not being really sure about his participation in the project.
- It only shows that McRae wasn't joking - affirmed major - It really looks like there is an ongoing struggle around this project. Though it's not the first time I see or hear about various parties fighting over rights concerning an important effore, I've never been directly involved. This makes me feel like reconsidering my decision.
Keira's eyes showed a sign of surprise.
- You think about backing off? I mean, if we can stay away from trouble this way... I think I feel the same, or rather, I had this though going through my head already yesterday.
John suspected that much.
- But will they let us? I wonder.
***
The incident happened in the middle of the night - a bit after 2 AM to be exact, but despite the late hour, lobby of the new hotel was really crowded. Order was kept by the hotel staff supported by tight security.
Upon arrival, Marlow quickly noticed autonomous bots, guard robots and militarymen around the building. Before being allowed inside, both he and miss Evergate had to go through compulsory identity checkup, even though being brough by Earth Army's sergeant.
Following entering the lobby, they have learned that incident at their hotel was not the only one to happen that night. From the looks of it, several locations hosting participants of the conference were targeted, and majority was evacuated to the hotel they were in right now.
John did a quick check of headlines in most popular news services only to find out that there was no mention of any terrorist attacks so far. It must have been too soon or project's overseers were really good at covering up inconvenient events. Either way, even with all of the commotion, nothing could be found on the web.
It looked like the hotel staff managed to handle the situation rather well, though John and Keira had to wait for about thirty minutes before being assigned their rooms - this time next to each other, the fact miss Evergate found re-assuring.
- Remembering all the events since we left the British Isles, it's better to have someone you know closeby, don't you think?
John could tell Keira's mood slightly improved, though he was sure they will not forget what they saw anytime soon.
- I feel much safer with the security we have here. Though I hope there is no saboteur among them.
- Don't say such things. No jinxes allowed.
Fortunately, the rest of the night passed quietly, and with no dangerous incidents to mention.
***
All participants of the conference, who agreed to the terms of cooperation, had to wake up early in the morning to join the final introduction.
John started the day by browsing the web in search for any news concerning the yesterday's incident. It turned out that several hotels had something going on, but there was no useful, more precise information as to what actually happened. Only in comments, he could find people discussing unusual observations they have made during the night.
Apparently, media were being controlled. While main news providers were all like that, Marlow was able to come upon much more detailed reports coming from smaller agencies, streamers and social media posts he found in the comments. However, any such entries kept disappearing from the net way too fast.
Honestly, when thinking about how they have managed to keep this project, especially construction of humongous ship, from the people's eyes, it was actually amazing how capable the higher-ups were to pull this off.
Still, Ryan surely made a valid point that nothing can go on forever, and keeping the situation in check would not be easy. It was not just a big project, it was a really serious matter for the whole humanity, but there will be always people who want to gain money and power using such opportunity.
John had no idea about the Future until now, could not tell who wass pulling the strings, and how to approach this whole project. When departing to the conference, he had no idea it will come to something like that. Usually, they would use his knowledge to consult, make him do some planning, designing or helping with finding new solutions. But this time, it was still not obvious what would his role be.
When browsing through provided documentation, and after talking to colonel McRae, he only knew that some of his ideas were to be implemented in the ship. There was for sure a lot of engineering work to help with, and Marlow could only wonder about his assignment for now, especally about the role he will be given when they arrive at their destination.
As John was getting ready, he received a notification to his PEC. It turned out that the venue was changed for the second day of conference, and it was to happen in the very hotel they were staying at - decision likely made based on most recent events, a valid precaution for avoiding further acts of terrorism. However, major still thought having the people involved in the project gathered in one place would surely make it easier for saboteurs to act.
Sadly, he was in no position to do anything about the decisions being made, so all he could do was to hope nothing serious happens today.
Knowing that there was no need to travel anywhere, and having about two hours to the start of the second round of the conference, Marlow decided to go to the cafeteria to eat something, so he left the room.
On the way, he knocked to Keira's room to check on her out of courtesy, but there was no response. Just to be sure, he also checked her online status which was set to busy. Since nothing seemed off, John went to the elevator.
It was 10 AM, therefore he was hoping for quiet meal, as people on business trips usually had to leave much earlier. To his surprise, the hotel proved to be crowded even at this hour. He found it hard to even get inside the elevator, and cafeteria was already packed.
Seeing all the people gathered in one place, Marlow was about to give up on eating here and going somewhere else, but in that very moment he saw someone waiving at him. The person in question was none other than professor Adam Barszcz, using a table all by himself.
Though he did not really like the guy much, John decided he could give it a rest for the sake of good breakfast.
- Hello, Adam - Marlow greeted Barszcz, while taking a seat - I didn't think there will be so many people here at this hour.
Professor took a sip of coffee and smiled.
- Well, most of them are not guests here, or even not participating in the conference. I've been here for like thirty minutes now, and I heard some of them talking. There's a lot of journalists and corps lurking around - Adam was looking around, while drinking his coffee - Help yourself, John. I've ordered more, hoping Miss Evergate would join, but she declined.
Dots in John's mind instantly connected - that was most likely the reason why Keira decided to stay in her room. To be honest, professor Barszcz was not a bad guy, but his attidtude and behavior could feel overbearing - it was actually the main reason why Marlow would often stay away from the guy.
- Well, you can't blame her - said Marlow, taking a bite of expensive pastrami sandwich - I think that last night could have been hard for many.
Barszcz sighed.
- Sure, I heard what happened. Though I'm one of those lucky guys who had it easy, but I know it's a lot of stress to go through something like that.
Marlow knew the story well. Being a renowned specialist in his field, professor Barszcz was often targeted by governments and corporations for his inventions. In relation to one of these, he even ended up losing one of his assistants in a scuffle. The tragedy was even greater as this assistant was also his lover.
- I was planning to ask that the next time we meet - John recalled one important thing - I bet you were involved in this project from the very start, so you should know pretty much everything, or am I wrong?
Professor put away the cup, and leaned closer to major.
- This is a complex matter, John. The only people that know pretty much everything about the project would be Mathias, Asako and maybe Ryan, though I heard he is being kept away from technical details. Aside from that, some people in governments and corporate executives. I know what you thought, but I didn't get any special treatment.
Marlow nodded, finishing the sandwich.
- Ok, I get it. Still, I didn't think they would keep you away. For such project, I thought they would keep you on orbital ring.
- About that. They couldn't keep two most knowledgeable black hole specialists on the orbital ring, could they? Oleks was chosen, just because he is older than me, and losing me would have been worse since I have more years to live. Have you ever heard something so stupid? Nevertheless, the reason why I'm here is that Oleks doesn't feel well enough to participate in this expedition anymore.
- So you can actually drop out of the project? This NDA seemed like this was a contract with the devil himself...
- Oh, I agree with that. But it's up to higher-ups if they take someone out of the list. Oleks simply needs a longer treatment now, hence the decision. I doubt they are letting people out that easily. And even if they do, don't think they won't keep an eye on them.
Adam looked at his watch, took a handful of cookies and stood up.
- Well, that's enough of chatting for me. I have couple of things to take care of before conference resumes. Until the next time, John.
Professor Barszcz left Marlow all by himself, but major was not complaining - he had a table all for himself after all. However, not long after staying alone, someone talked to him, a woman's voice:
- Excuse me, would it be a problem if I sit with you? There's hardly any free spot here.
John looked at the woman, and immediately recognized her.
- Oh, you are the person from yesterday. Svetlana, do I recall correctly?
The woman nodded and smiled.
- So, is it okay?
- Sure, please, have a sit. I'm here all by myself after all.
- Miss Evergate is not with you, mister Marlow?
Major suddenly realized he did not get the woman's surname the last night, he only remembered her name.
- Just call me John, I'm not really good at being formal.
Svetlana laughed for some reason. Marlow gave her a surprised look.
- Sorry about that, but you are a soldier - she said - How can you be bad at being formal?
- I may be in the army, however, I'm a science officer. I consider myself a scientist, and an engineer, more than military man.
The woman still had a smile on her face as she listened to John, while eating her meal.
- You really seem unusual for a soldier, I must say. Not what I'd expect at least.
- Are you some kind of psychologist specialized in military behaviorism?
- No, by no means. Just a mechanic, who worked a bit with the army back in my homeland. When I compare you to the soldiers I've met, you're a completely different type of person. Well, it may be just that soldiers in my country are die hard traditionalists. Maybe that's why it feels so weird casually talking with a military guy like you.
Marlow knew a good deal about Russia. The country surely changed over the last 200 years, but some of the old ways were still deeply rooted. While her thoughts about military conduct were quite intereseting, what he took even more interest in was Svetlana's profession.
- To be perfectly honest, I'd have never guessed you are a mechanic.
This was pretty straightforward, but Svetlana did not look as being offended or anything like that. On the other hand, she immediately asked several questions.
- Where did it come from? Is it because I'm a woman? Or maybe because of my built?
- A bit of each. You don't come often at women in this line of work, and you need quite a bit of strength to manage.
The woman smiled widely as she looked at John.
- That's why I'm using my finesse and other skills when working. I think of this as my main job, though I'm also a class S operator.
This made Marlow speechless for quite a moment. Class S operators were elite people who could handle any available mecha on the market. Exams were known for being extremely hard as biggest machines could easily weight several hundred tonnes.
- Why would you stay as mechanic if you have this kind of license? Don't you know how well are operators paid?
Smile quickly disappeared from Svetlana's face as she heard the question.
- That's why I was really happy about getting it, but finding a job was a completely different matter. And now, I'm here, mainly because they pay well, including money for my family.
John could not believe that such a multi-skilled person would have to stick to lower wage contract despite qualifying to be an all-rounder useful in most of technology companies. He was really curious about finding the reason.
- By the way, how old are you? - he could not help it, he had to ask.
The woman bursted with laughter, causing several people to look their way.
- You know, that now was really rude - she said that, but her face showed she was really amused - You shouldn't ask girls about their age, really. Still, I get your point, an you are right, I was rejected because of my looks. Who would give equipment worth millions to some teenager girl. The thing is, I may look like that, but I'm well over twenty now, and I'm really confident about my skills. You may not believe it, but I've spent years in training, well before coming of age. That's how my life was, and I was doing that for my parents and siblings, so I do have motivation. At some point, I even considered investing in changing my looks, however, my parents were against that. At least, I got a really good chance now.
Here was the woman who was placing a bet on this expedition, talking to a man who already had a good life on Earth, and did not need to participate at all. Two people with so different approach sitting by the same table.
Hearing about Svetlana making this choice for her relatives made Marlow remember the days when his parents were still alive. Back then, he could not even hope or dream about getting to where he was now.
John had a really hard start at life. His parents, though very intelligent and well-educated, never made it to the top. As a child and a teenager, he kept thinking why this was happening, why would his parents have to live such lives. After years, he finally came to conclusion that they simply did not have luck, maybe did not meet correct people. In John's case, he was scouted as a student, and that's how landing a good job became possible. Sadly, both his mother and father did not live long enough to see their son's success.
Recalling the past, Marlow could relate to Svetlana's situation, understanding why would she go to such lengths.
- So, they also pay money to relatives?
The woman shrugged.
- I have no idea about contracts of other people. I wanted to secure money for my family, that's why I negotiated and got such deal. My parents weren't too happy about my decision.
John would not blame them. When he gave it a bit of thought, many families would not let their relatives go for a dangerous journey like that - there were too many unknows concerning the project, though he did not know what kind of details participants could share with their close ones.
- They are just likely worried. Though I don't know what exactly were you allowed to tell them?
Svetlana looked at him, slightly confused.
- Didn't you get the information in your contract?
- I didn't look since I don't have any relatives to worry about.
His words probably made her feel uneasy and sympathetic at the same time, but she did not pry, and answered his question:
- Officially, I'm going for space mining, which should give enough explanation about the amount of money I'm getting. Apparently, they plan to disclose more information at later date, once we reach the planet.
Major nodded.
- I would expect as much from people who kept it all away from the public for so long. It easily matches your qualifications. You could even use it in the future to get a job requiring this S class license.
Svetlana smiled, but shook her head.
- I doubt it would be the case though. I mean, we don't even know how much time will it take to get there and back, if we manage to get back of course. They gave us only some rough estimates after all.
- That's a pretty pessimistic approach, if I'm to put it bluntly.
- Well, I can hardly be an optimist after the last night. I'm happy to be still alive, but what happened there made me realize this is one risky business to get involved. Not that I've joined without being aware how many people would want to take part.
Given the general economic situation around the globe, John expected many people were likely to join being simply money-driven. If it was several years ago, he would probably be the one of such people, looking for a better future. Nowadays, joining the job market was extremely hard without having good connections and signing up with some major corporation while still being a student. He was ideal example of such situation with his works being noticed by military, following an official offer for becoming engineer and scientist for the Earth Army. Needless to say, this choice changed his life completely, allowing him living without worrying about waking up the next day.
His background, being a citizen coming from the lower parts of British Agglomeration where the poor had to live, was not something commonly seen in resumes of elites. First of all, it was not easy to get rid of labels people from such neighborhoods had. Only thanks to his hard work, Marlow managed to get where he was now. Sadly, his parents did not live to this day to see his success - something that was painful for John each time he recalled his past. The only keepsakes they left were books and furniture - everything else was used by his parents to help his studies. With all of that, major felt connection with Svetlana, who also thought about family as he did when his parents were still alive.
- Since so many people would volunteer, shouldn't we be overjoyed? - John asked sarcastically.
- For now, I hope my family is happy and can live a decent life - Svetlana smiled slightly - Thinking of it gives me motivation.
Loud alarm echoed seconds after her words, and numerous militarymen entered the building, with all monitors showing messages to follow army orders. Marlow thought for a moment about going to get Keira, but it turned out to be out of question as one of soldiers explained to him.
All those armed people and robots they brought were precautions for delivering participants of the conference to the new site where final instructions were to be shared. Their belongings were supposed to be send separately in a secure convoy.
While John knew and understood policies military was following, being in the middle of operation did not feel good by any means. Honestly speaking, even during trainings he always hoped any of the scenarios will not happen for him in reality. But life was never easy on him. Good thing he had someone to talk to next to him, even though Svetlana was someone he met just recently.
They were separated into groups and escorted into armored vehicles major knew quite well as he was involved in its creation. These were military grade ATV (All Terrain Vehicles), capable of moving in any conditions on the Earth's surface, capable of floating, riding and flying. Maybe not very comfortable when riding in cargo section, but offering a strong defence against most of available conventional weapons.
- This is the first time I'm inside one of these - Svetlana looked at the vehicle with visible admiration - I heard they could even withstand nuke's shockwave.
John smiled, hearing the comment she made.
- That's an exaggeration. I don't recall we designed it for that.
- Wait, you designed this ATV?
- It's not like I was the one. We had a whole team working on this project.
- But it's still amazing. I had no idea you were involved in something like that.
Marlow was about to elaborate on the project, but he suddenly realized it was not something he could disclose so easily. Ryan told him to be careful, and here he was, talking so openly. Sure, his current companion seemed nice, but why would it make her trustworthy. In a world where information was worth a lot and sold to corporations for load of money, he should be much more careful. Following that, John continued to talk with Svetlana, though being more vague about details and explaining to her that details are confidential.
Minutes later, they have arrived to their destination and - to their much surprise - it was not any kind of university or conference hall where military took them. Instead, they were at a shuttle train station, the one leading to the closest Orbital Ring pillar. Obviously, this led to a big confusion.
Orbital Ring was connected to Earth by enormous pillars which were acting not only as supports, but had many more functions, and were main means of traveling to Orbital Ring, using specially prepared elevators. Those who knew to where this shuttle line is connected quickly understood what this situation meant - there would be no second conference day, or rather, not on Earth's surface.
- John, do you know what's this is about? - Svetlana seemed to be one of those who were unfamiliar with the area.
- It looks like we are leaving for Orbital Ring today.
