Chapter 13 - The Battle for the End

The arc of light and darkness was all could be seen as the Dark King's shadowy blade met the violet sword of light that threw sparks. Davenna watched the fight with apprehension, glancing back at the doorway that glimmered slightly in the darkness.

It would've been the simplest thing to just walk into it and be safe, but in order to do it, they'd have to get past the fight between the King and Queen. She nudged Iris, gesturing to the door. Iris's gaze sharpened. Her hands made a swirling ball of water, and she made a line around the Dark Court. Raena put her hand out and vines sprouted from the water. The Dark Court screeched at the sight. "Hulio. Take Zira and Davenna."

"NO," Davenna said, cutting Raena off. "I have to keep the door open."

"Fine," Raena said with a scowl. "You lot." She said, gesturing to Discord, Prince, and Artie. "On the dragon."

Much to Zira's protest, Prince grabbed her around the waist and climbed on the golden dragon, who flew up high in the sky once everyone had climbed on, and then dived into the doorway, making Davenna flinch. Ifrinn pulled out his sword. "I believe it would be your turn," Ifrinn said, looking between Davenna and Raena. Davenna protested.

"What about you?" She said. "The Queen of light is my true Queen. I served her, in the past. I won't leave her now." Ifrinn said.

Raena glanced at Ifrinn with distaste. "The Queen will be disappointed." She said.

"The Queen has always known where my heart truly lies," Ifrinn answered.

"That doesn't look like a good sign," Iris murmured as she looked at where the King and Queen were fighting. There was a sudden gust of wind as Julio returned to human form, standing protectively over Iris. "The Queen is getting tired." He said. Ifrinn frowned. "She's the Queen of light she isn't accustomed to battle the way the King must be," Ifrinn said worriedly.

"Ifrinn, get ready to protect your Queen," Raena said. Iris moved her hands in a twisting motion, a sheet of water appearing between her palms.

Davenna watched as the King made a powerful swipe and the sword of light flew from the Queen's hands. She took a cautious step back and Iris threw a sheet of water between them, much to the King's fury. He whipped around and threw his sword up as Ifrinn threw down his. Davenna and Raena ran to the Queen to make sure she was alright. The Queen's eyes widened at seeing Davenna.

"You shouldn't be here." She said as she pushed herself to stand. Her eyes moved to the clashing of swords behind her.

"Ifrinn." She moaned. Her hand going to her stomach.

"My Queen! You're hurt!" Raena said. "The Dark King has always been the better fighter." The Queen said, falling to her knees with a painful gasp. Davenna, Julio, and Raena crouched down worriedly while Iris stood protecting them from the King and Ifrinn with a wall of water.

"What can we do?" Davenna asked. "You can be safe, and better than your parents." The Queen said. Davenna frowned. "How do you know my parents?" Davenna asked, Raena and Julio felt a swell of power and knew that something was happening that they were all unprepared for.

"A mother will always know their child even if this is the first time they met." The Queen said, putting a hand on Davenna's cheek. "There's so much I wished to tell you. And now it's too late." She said, her eyes filling with tears. She looked beyond Davenna at where the Dark King stood fighting.

"It's my curse. I'm always too late. I was too late to tell your father whose child I had borne, and he nearly destroyed my kingdom. The only way to protect you from your father's wrath was to send you where he most despised to go. I never got the chance to know you. But I have loved you more than all the stars in the sky." The Queen said. Davenna's head spun, and as the Queen's hand fell light surrounded them both before it flew out in an arc separating Ifrinn and the Dark King, and beyond the Dark King's Kingdom the sound of glass could be heard breaking as the Crystal gates that protected the light kingdom fell with the death of their queen.

The Dark King dropped to his knees, his Sword fallen as he watched the Light magic from the Queen move to her daughter Davenna. Her pale skin glowed, the blonde in her hair turning into a platinum violet. The King looked into Davenna's eyes and saw not the Queen but his grandfather looking back at him, and he knew. He knew Davenna belonged to the dark kingdom as much as she belonged to the light Kingdom. A burst of light so bright that he had to close his eyes flashed, and then his daughter was gone. Like she'd never been there before.

In the Forest of the Fae

Davenna opened her eyes and saw the blue sky, birds chirping in the distance. As she looked up, Katherine's face appeared above her, as did Irina's. "Nice hair," Katherine said, making Davenna frown. She sat up and pulled a lock of hair in front of her, seeing instead of her blonde, a silvery purple curl.

"Odd," Davenna murmured. She looked around, seeing the dazed members of everyone who had traveled to the fairylands.

She looked back at Katherine. Who she now realized spurted a bloody nose. "You pulled us out," Davenna said with surprise.

"I tugged on the bracelet. And possibly gave myself a concussion. But at least everyone's safe." Kat said. "I have a feeling that isn't the last you've seen of that place," Katherine said, plopping down on the grass. "I think I'm going to nap right here," Katherine said, and promptly went to sleep.

Zira walked over and sat beside Davenna. "I don't think I'll be going to another school dance, no matter how many cute boys are there," Zira said. Davenna laughed, hugging Zira quite happy to have her friend back.
