Chapter 16 - Chapter 16

After Zeven stormed out, he veered right and made his way to the back of the house.

The horse stable was not far from the window that Chris had previously jumped from, when Zeven looked to the window all that he could think of was her. He huffed as he started walking faster to the stable, his feet carrying him far away from that room, his words, her. Throwing open the door he swung his hand to his left grabbing a satchel with practiced precision.

He thrust his hand onto the bag and grabbed the grey cloak that had been shoved inside it. With one hand he held the cloak while he used the other to maneuver the satchel over his head where it could rest on his shoulder. Then he unclipped the front of the cloak before putting it on with flare. Leaving the hood down for now, he reached behind him to the small table where the satchel had been stored. Zeven took a deep breath before picking up the single pair of glasses that sat on the table.

Unlike the pair in his bedroom, these were thick rimmed with the sole purpose of concealing as much of his face as possible. He carefully donned them keeping them far enough downward on his nose to prevent himself from looking through the lens.

The blurry world around him acted as his safety net. After years of seeing the world without clarity, he was an expert at finding his way around without hard lines. As a child he was permitted to wear glasses to help him see only when no one else could see him. Studying in his room before studying with his tutor in order to memorize the information to avoid reading from the book. Zeven's vision had only gotten worse since those days.

Calling his horse over to the edge of the stable, he threw on her saddle and checked the fit. He grabbed the reins and guided her out of the stable. Careful to shut the door without startling her, he felt his mood improving as he threw his leg over and rested in the saddle. He left his hood down and the wind whipped through his hair as he made his way towards the nearest town.

The town was only seven or eight miles from the house, but the dense forest kept most people from venturing too far. As far as they were concerned the forest stretched on for miles and was filled with peril. Most rumors were courtesy of Zeven himself, it would look bad if a villager stumbled upon his house by accident. He had done his best to keep his identity hidden from those in the town, there were of course several who knew, but Zeven could trust those few to keep his secret.

His horse kept at a steady pace as Zeven guided her through the thick trees and brush, careful to avoid the dangerous areas. He pushed his glasses up higher on his nose looking through them every so often to check the safety of their path. Zeven was familiar with the area, however in order to avoid making a trail straight to his house he took a different route each time he came this way.

Winding left and right he finally made it to the edge of the forest. Zeven dismounted his horse and guided her by the reins through the last few yards of forest. The first house was still a way off from the town, but it was a house he knew well. He didn't need to go inside to know what those currently in it were doing, nor what those currently outside were doing.

He hitched his horse to the post outside of the house. Patting her head before walking on, he took a deep breath and pulled the hood over his head.
