Chris now had scraps of paper thrown around her small room, all her ideas were stunted, ending with failure. She refused to believe that marriage was the only solution to end the war. Her eyes drifted to the small window above her bed. The sun had only just begun to set, it had already disappeared entirely from her line of sight.
Her stomach grumbled, in her tunnel vision Chris had overlooked eating anything since yesterday. Just last week going a day without time to eat would have been nothing for her, in fact she found herself missing meals quite frequently when she was leading her army. She would get lost just like this and completely forget any sense of self. If it weren't for her right hand man and friend she may have never eaten. Christopher missed Brennan. She found herself longing for his company. Now she feared she may never see him again.
Her stomach churned again, and Christopher began to make her way to the kitchen. She left her room and traveled down to the hallway. Right before she could turn to walk down the stairs the front door clicked open and then shut softly footsteps lead into the kitchen. Knowing whose steps those were, Chris retreated quietly back to the door that led back to her room.
She sat on the other side of the door and listened closely for any sign that he had left where she wanted to be. The noise from her stomach fought against her decision, but Chris had no desire to see Zeven right now. And nothing could convince her to willingly step into the same space as him.
The front door clicked open and shut again and Chris thanked her lucky stars that he returned from whence he came, and so quickly. She dashed for the hallway aiming to get what she came for and be back in her room by the time he came back. She stepped onto the stairs and ran down only halfway before stopping dead in her tracks.
A very solemn Brennan stood in front of the door, Chris recognized his sandy blond hair immediately. Her breathing stopped as their eyes met. Her father had said he would not be sending anyone, but here before her stood her best friend, come to rescue her. She floated down to the bottom landing, "Brennan?" she called softly, her hand reaching out to him. still not believing what was before her. And in the same moment, she watched his eyes fall to the ground, his body tense.
He was not there for her.
