Chapter 2 - Family matters

"My mother?" My curiosity turned into anger and what was an eager look for him to continue had turned into an angry expression.

"Why do we have to talk about her? She abandoned me! Why do you have to bring her up now?! It's my birthday!"

"That's exactly why!" My father raised his voice. That was really unusual for him and he continued.

"You know she had to leave... I have told you that-"

"She did it to protect me! Yeah I know!" I interrupted him. I know... I am a great daughter, but in my defense today was tough.

"Young lady, you have to understand, this is all about your Legacy. Your power shall manifest today, you will be in constant danger... And you need to listen to me!" And... that's when he started sounding insane.

"What are you talking about?"

"The powers you have inherited from your mother. The powers of the Wodin family. I couldn't tell you before, I couldn't sweetie but... It's time for you to learn about your legacy" My father kept talking crazy and I became more and more scared as he went on.

And that brings us to the present.

"My legacy? I don't have a legacy!"

"You must have felt it today Adolpha! Your Gift! You awaken today!"

I can't shake off the feeling he is right. I did feel something today, maybe I didn't pay attention to it because of the scary freaking monster in front of me... But I did feel something in that alley. I felt my eyes hurting, and suddenly I could see.

"Dad... You understand you sound crazy right?" I asked him, in a calming manner.

"Yes dear... But you can't tell me you haven't felt it..." He was pleading, begging me to say yes.

"I-I felt... something, yes but I don't know anything about the rest of this!"

He suddenly jumped up and excitedly grabbed my shoulders.

"Yes! That's what I am talking about! I will explain everything! Or rather your mother will! It's in the library just wait!" My father ran towards the library and I was left hanging.

"Wait wha-? My mother will?" I asked him.

"Well, it's more about her side of the family than mine... Here! Here it is!" He presented me with an old huge book, it was about as big as my torso and looked like it weighed a thousand pounds.

"Go on... Open it sweetie! Everything will be clear, your mother will explain the situation!"

Again with the crazy talk...

You see my mother left me, or rather abandoned me when I was still a baby. She left without a word, a letter, or even an explanation. The best I've gotten from my father was an old black and white photograph of her in my age, looking rather happy with one of her friends and the phrase "she left to protect you", without an explanation of why she had to leave or from whom she was protecting me.

Small particles of dust were sparkled in the gleam of our living room as I turned over the leather cover of the book and in my surprise finding an envelope tucked inside a small paper compartment at it's backside. Tears started falling after I saw the inscription addressed to me that read:

ANGELINA WODIN GRAY

TO MY SWEETIE WHO PROBABLY HATES ME NOW, ADOLPHA GRAY

"How long did you have this?" I asked my father with a crackling voice. I could barely speak, the mother I thought had left me all alone with no explanation had left me a letter. It may not seem significant, but that feeling of total abandonment I had during my whole life was turning into a surge of anger towards my unassuming father.

"Ever since she left... But sweetie..." He looked sorry for what he had done. Keeping that letter in secrecy, making me believe I was abandoned... But I couldn't forgive him, even if I saw a side of him I had never seen before. The side that felt guilt.

"I-I need to go to my room Dad... I don't want to see you right now." I said and took the letter with me, holding it close to my heart as I left.

My father was left alone in the living room looking at my back with sad eyes and as I glanced behind me I could see a faint tear forming. He then brushed his big brown eyes with his fingertip and said in a supporting manner.

"Yeah, I understand... But if you need anything I'll be here. You know I love you right?"

"Right"

My tone was quite straightforward. If I was sure of anything that'd be that he loved me. He always treated me well and even though he always had to work hard to support the both of us, he was kind to me and showed more love than a mother and a father combined.

I reached my room, closed the wooden door, carved with weird European letter-symbols by my dad. and sat on my bed, then I stared at the envelop containing the last words my mother had ever written to me before she left for what felt like an eternity.

I gathered all my courage and gently ripped apart the glue at the back of the envelop sealing it's insides but a nerve wracking feeling and the anxiety that was building up inside me made me spontaneously make a move with my hand that ruined it.

The backside of the envelop was now ripped and looked in quite a sad state but it finally revealed the contents.

A black parchment letter, a ring made of some kind of weird black but glistering mineral with a blue inscription reading "WODIN", a black feather and a beautiful, long, jewelry box which was crimson with golden curved letters.

So many treasures. But the only thing I truly cared about was that parchment.

I grabbed hold of it, I smelled it and then I started reading it.

But before I could even pronounce the first word my ADHD kicked in and combined with my anxiety made the letters an unreadable mess that started flying above the black parchment page.
