Chapter 7 - Magic, spells and loss

He surged the huge fireballs towards me and I ran like hell.

I jumped and hid behind a fallen wooden log but he just threw a fireball and eviscerated it.

"Stop hiding little mouse, don't take more of my time." He said hurling those fireballs around.

I was freaking out, I was scared, but I knew I couldn't just wait and die. I had to find my mother, I had to save dad. I could have a family. A complete family. And I am not just giving up on that.

"Wiz, help me, I want to cast sleep. How do I do that?" I asked him inside my head.

"The spell can be cast right away but I doubt it will be successful since your targets health is apparently at 100%"Wiz responded nonchalantly.

"Do you have to be hurt to fall asleep?" I wondered. Well what else could I do?

I took a look around me as I run for my life and saw fallen branches, mud and just... trees. Not much to work with. Then I saw Minos trying to catch my little cat. If I wasn't terrified it'd be a funny sight.

I called Snowball to come here and she immediately responded transforming again into a huge ball and hurling towards me. But Mark wouldn't let that happen.

"Oh so you want your kitty to help you." He said hurling a fireball towards my familiar. It created an explosion of steam on contact. I felt the heat, and I felt pain as I saw my green meter falling to about 50%.

"Snowball!" I yelled.

"I am alright, as long as you live I live."A female voice resounded in my head, I guessed it was Snowball and that she could speak now. Great. Then I got an idea.

"Wiz explain to me the aim and the frostbite spell." I asked him.

"Aim. A novice spell that creates a target on something you can see and then sends an object towards that target. The object cannot weigh more than 50 pounds.

Frostbite. A novice spell making the air in a specific place extremely cold, reaching approximately -150 degrees Celcious instantaneously." Wiz said robotically.

"I don't know all that Celcious stuff but is it enough to freeze that steam?"I said and hoped the answer would be yes.

"That kind of temperature is enough to freeze and condense water molecules in the air, yes." NOW WE ARE TALKING, BABY! I was ready to put my plan into action, I saw Snowball in the middle of the steam show, ready to go without much damage. Mark was preparing another fireball aiming towards her and Minos charged towards me. I guess they swapped targets.

"I am ready" The feminine voice of my kitty resounded in my head.

"Wiz, Snowball, cast frostbite inside the area the steam is in." As I told them this I saw a 3 foot tall magic circle appearing before me.

"Touch the circle to initiate mana transference" Wiz didn't sound excited, but I sure was. I was about to perform magic. Actual freaking magic.

I touched the circle and I felt a huge, powerful sensation. A tingle coming down from my spine, traveling through my shoulders then arms and reaching the tips of my fingers as blue sparks rushed forth and light the spell circle bright shining blue.

Parts of the spell circle started moving like cogs and I saw another magic circle appearing where the steam was. I felt on instinct the need to yell and so I did.

"FROSTBITE!"

Suddenly the air started condensing, the steam started covering everything in ice. The bull that was charging at me slipped and fell and the moisture on the trees and bushes became tiny stalagmites and stalactites. Mark felt cold as hell since he was floating around there and I saw a platform appearing under his legs. An ice platform that now fell together with him to the ground.

OK. That went better than I had hoped. My blue magic meter had fallen down to 25% though. After the use of just one spell.

Mark had fallen in the cold and was shaking. His cow-demon also couldn't move. But I wasn't about to just run now, letting them hunt me another day.

"Wiz, perform the aim spell, target Mark and his familiar and send the glaciers towards them" I was determined to see this through. He may have acted as my friend, but...

The magic circle appeared before me. It's color white. I inserted my mana and parts of it started spinning, the glaciers moved towards them. I couldn't look.

I turned away and went to find my dad.

He was where I last seen him, he must have lost consciousness when Minos hit him against the tree. I went closer to him and tried to check his vitals. He was alive and well, not too hurt, probably just got a concussion. I shook him and he returned to consciousness.

"W-what?!" He said surprised.

"Where are we? What happened sweetie? You look hurt!" He seemed concerned.

"Everything is fine dad, let's go."

"What about the daemon?" My dad looked confused.

"I dealt with him, he won't be a problem anymore."

He followed me back to the road in silence. He must understand how it feels to lose someone you care about. But I didn't feel remorse. I didn't feel loss. I felt betrayal.

I took a decision that day. I decided I wouldn't let anyone get close enough to hurt me and my family. I decided I would grow stronger. That I would become a force to be reckoned with.

My dad and I reached our destroyed car. We called the police and in about 10 minutes a police car was there to take us home. We decided to go to the Great tree another day. Maybe tomorrow. But today we'd sit back and calm down.

The next morning it was Saturday but I couldn't sleep in like I usually did on the weekend so I got up, I brushed my teeth as always, and went down for breakfast. But I didn't find dad cooking his infamous pancakes.

I found him having a heated conversation with the weirdest woman I had ever seen.
