Chapter 10 - The Rehearsal Dinner

Alexandra

"Baxter, get down. Everybody down!" I shouted as I spotted the shooter, a man in his mid 30's, with a revolver in hand. Forget that those small cuties are small, it still fires bullets and those bullets may leave a small hole but definitely not a small pain.

We already started to notice something, that something wasn't right. And by we I mean I, Gwen, Steven and Joe. Before I went forward for my speech, we noticed some suspicious movements amongst the staff and some guests. Given what happened to Baxter's friend, we decided to be cautious.

The continuous screaming of the guest couldn't keep me long in my thoughts.

"Baxter I need you to get this people to a safe place, is there anywhere here that can provide that" I asked Baxter.

"the ballroom is one of those places" he replied to me and there was no panic in his voice, shocking.

"well, get them to those other places" I said to him then quickly turned to my team that were already gathered around me. "Joe did you get a good look at the shooter" I asked Joe as we all reached for our guns and checked it for the bullets.

"vaguely but I can spot a suspicious human being" Joe said.

"that's good enough for me. Joe you're with Baxter. Make sure everyone gets to safety. And look out for the shooter, he may be going with the crowd" I said and Joe quickly moved and him and Baxter were leading the guests out of the ball room.

"how many agents came to attend the event?" I asked Gwen.

"asides the three of us, I think four more agents" Gwen replied.

"okay. Gwen take two of them, check out the left side of the estate. Steven take the other two and check out the right side of the estate, I'll cover the rest and we will circle round back to the main entrance, now!" I said and we moved to our various directions.

This guy did not know when to try to kill someone but on my engagement party. What an engagement gift!

If I find this guy, I would use that revolver to slap the nonsense out of his head. I continued to take a walk down the main house. I looked everywhere and nothing. As I got close to the rendezvous point I realized this was way pointless.

"the suspect is long gone" Joe said as we all circled back at the main entrance.

" I know" I said feeling tired and angry at the same time. we should have caught him.

"lets gather back in. And check out the guests, I've already called it in, agents should be here any minute" I said to them and they quickly moved in to the house and I followed them behind.

"what a show for your engagement/" Gwen said.

"or a sign from heaven" Steven said causing Gwen and I to look at him, both of us unsure of what reaction to give to his statement. But he didn't realize owe were looking at him because he was walking ahead of us, heading to the guests. I decide to ignore the statement and so does Gwen. We check out all the guests and they seemed fine. The other agents arrived the scene and began examining the place.

"the four of us noticed that there was something wrong with the crowd , so I went up the stage to scout the crowd, to see if I could spot the articular person because we didn't want to spook him or them" I said as I explained to Corbin what had happened.

"oh, that's why you gave that speech?" Baxter said but it sounded more like a question.

'alright if they could infiltrate the guest and the event what about the wedding?" Corbin said and he had a point. The rest of us were in a thinking pose.

"we'll need to tighten up security on that day and even at both your places" Corbin said.

"no need in mine. Besides we are staying together so…" I said.

"you are staying together? At your own place?" Steven asked, more like shouted a little in an irritated way. What's his problem?

"yeah, problem?" I asked in reply to his question, starting to be irritated with his attitude.

"not at all. But Corbin is right though" Steven said sternly.

"but Corbin isn't living in my house, I am" I said sternly., clearly indicating that my decision was mine and it was final. Seeing that he got the message by him keeping quiet I continued.

"good. Now that we are on the same page, I'm going to meet with the Baxter's and my parents" I said ending the whole discussion, that's the only way any of this was happening.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Snow, Snow!" Gwen said snapping her fingers in my face, bringing me back to reality.
"what?" I asked, not knowing what was happening.
"dude's been talking to you" Gwen said referring to the examiner standing in front of me.
"yes" I said, giving him the go ahead to speak.
"so I was saying that the whole incident at your engagement party has been examined, the CCTV footage and all the security camera's were checked and nothing. We came up with nothing, no suspects, no nothing" Ray said.
"what about the traffic cam's?" I asked him.
"well I don't know about that because I don't know what we could get from that but I could try and see if anyone turns up with the description you guys put down" Ray said and left my office. As he closed the door, Gwen faced me.
"what's with you?" Gwen asked.
"don't you think there is something wrong?" I asked.
"I've told you, there is no correlation between Owen Fletcher's death and what happened t your party" Gwen said with full assurance.
"how not. Gwen the link is that at both instances Baxter was there. What is he is the target" I said being convinced about what happened.
"and if he was, he would be dead by now. Owen's gun shot to the head was a clear and precise shot, not a missed one says the M.E, meaning it was deliberate. The shooting yesterday was definitely a scare. I'm sure of that. He shot into the air, is Baxter in the air?" Gwen said, sounding like she was getting pissed. "It could have been a jealous ex who hired that guy to scare you off for all we know!" Gwen added, making a good point and a lot of sense, but I wasn't convinced.
"Girl you getting married on Saturday, that's tomorrow, you need to chill" Gwen said. And on this, Gwen was right. I was getting married tomorrow and I needed to be in the right frame of mind. I needed to let this go and focus on the facts. That's what Gwen would say.
"you need to focus on the facts. Wedding tomorrow… she was saying as my phone chimed and I brought it out to see what it was. It was a message and I opened it as Gwen continued to speak.
"and after all of this, there is your house, your money, your freedom, Danny" Gwen said.
"Danny" I said and I could hear the trembling in my own voice which I believe resulted to the shocked and worried expression Gwen currently wore on her face.
"what happened to Danny, what happened?" Gwen asked but I had no time for Q&A's. I headed for my gun and badge and ran out of the office, with Gwen following behind me.
"what happened to Danny, talk to me… Alex!" she called me bringing me to a halt.
"there is a bomb at Dany's school" I said hurriedly and continued to walk hurriedly to the elevator.
"how do you know that?" Gwen asked, sounding more worried than she sounded at first.
" I just got an anonymous text. You know the schools location, I'm heading there right now, call for back up" I said as I was in the elevator. It closed with the picture of Gwen's worried look in my head, and beside it a picture of Danny. Laced with all that was my fear and anger. I will never forgive myself if anything happened to him.
The 1 hour 30 minutes drive it takes from my office to his school took me 45 minutes, I must have broken almost every traffic rule there is. I mediately I got to the school, I ran out of the car, leaving the engine running.
As I ran, heading towards the school's entrance, I saw students trooping out of the school's building, school had closed, perfect opportunity for more chaos. I started to search for Danny. I alerted the security personnel's at the entrance on what was going on and they helped in getting everyone's attention quietly and also stayed on the look out just in case the bomber was still around the schools vicinity. They got them to safety while I continued in my search for Danny and the bomb.
I went to his class and he wasn't there. I went to the toilet, he wasn't there, I went to the gym, he wasn't there, where the hell was he! At this I headed to the locker room and then I found him there with some other kids I assume to be his friends.
"why are you in here when everyone is going out of school!" I shouted, not even knowing here it was coming form, or why even. That he was in danger or that he was sneaking around in school.
"who the hell are you?" one of the other boys asked.
"ask me that one more time and I will beat your manners back into you" I said to the kid and he drew back.
"get out of here now. All of you!" I shouted again.
"Danny you know this lady, cause I'mma mess her up" another one said.
The last one came forward and before he could lift a finger I raised my hands and took his right hand and bent it and he screamed.
"she's the woman that gave birth to me" Danny says. Given the situation, I'll let the attitude slide.
"there's a bomb in this building, move. I will not say it again, move!" I said sternly and they all left the room, while I continued to search for the bomb, walking behind them as they moved a bit faster. As we go on, my phone vibrates in my pocket, I pull it out and pick up the call.
"Gwen" I said as I answered the call.
" I have a team on ground, got here as fast as we could. Have you confirmed the bomb?" Gwen asked.
"not yet, but I'll keep searching. Four kids should be heading out soon, and have the bomb squad on standby" I said to her.
"I already do. Be careful" Gwen said and I ended the call. I put the phone back in my pocket, with my gun still in hand and kept walking down the school's hallway, the same way I came. As I continued to search for the bomb, I walked past a classroom, I caught something in the corner of my eye, it was so quick like a flash, like there was nothing there. I stopped and walked backwards and looked at the room, it looked suspicious.
I hate suspicious.
I walked into the classroom cautiously and looked around then I noticed a box on the table, I approached it carefully then took deep breaths before I picked my phone, put a call through to Gwen and placed the phone on the table.
"yeah, anything?" Gwen asked eagerly.
"I found a small box on the table in a classroom" I said to her.
"is it a bomb?" she asked.
"I'm not sure, I just want to check it out" I said to her, took another deep breath and opened the box and followed by that opening was a loud bang sound, like a bomb. I looked around my surrounding and saw it was still intact. I f that sound wasn't from here, then where was it from? I ran out of the classroom and raced to the entrance of the school. As I got out, I saw that here was smoke coming from the other side. As I was about going to the direction of the smoke, Gwen quickly approached me and called my attention.
"Snow. I already sent some guys out there, they should be reporting any minute" Gwen said to me and as she finished that line, a voice came over from the radio.
"all clear. It wasn't a bomb" the man over the radio said.
"copy that. What was it then?" Gwen asked.
"the explosion was caused by some road parts which fell off. Apparently, there was a construction going on here" the man said.
"alright, copy that. All of you should head back and still be on the look out for anything fishy on the way back" Gwen said to him.
"copy that" the man said and the radio went silent. I looked at Gwen and she looked back at me and I knew just what that look was. I walked over to where Danny was standing with his friends.
"are you okay?" I asked him.
"not like you care but I'm peachy" he replied to me then walked out with his friends.
"Danny, Danny" I called but he ignored me. "I wasn't even done talking" I said to Gwen as she walked up to me.
"take it easy. And Corbin wants to see you" Gwen said to me and we went to see Corbin.
After the whole day, getting home I couldn't help but think about what happened today. Something was off. I stepped into the shower just to take a bath and refresh my brain, possibly my thinking. As I came out from the shower and was drying my hair, my phone chimed, the sound indicating a new message had entered my phone. I moved closer to my bed and picked my phone which was resting on top of my clothes and opened the message and I couldn't fathom the meaning of the message.
"this was just the rehearsal dinner"
