Chereads / GEMINI: OF TWO WORLDS / Chapter 21 - CHAPTER TWENTY

Chapter 21 - CHAPTER TWENTY

Old Town Memorial Park

Chris walked down the almost empty park. He was in a black hoodie. He kept looking left and right. As though he were looking for someone.

He stopped as soon he he saw her in front of her. She stood almost ten metres away from. She kept titled her head and squinting her eyes at Chris. She wasn't sure he was Chris.

Chris pulled down his hoodie revealing his face.

"Was it all a lie?" She raised her voice

"Which part? Be specific!" Replied Chris in a cocky tone.

"The part where you loved me. The part where you said you cared for me."

"Being close as we did, I would be lying if I said I didn't care for you! But I can't say I loved you. I'm sorry! "

"You're sorry? Why put me through something like that? The mugging. You staged it, why?"

"So that you would pull me in closer to you."

Chris could tell Shea was emotional. Her voice showed it. Furthermore he could see her wipe her cheeks now and then. He really, genuinely cared for her.

"They say your first love always messes you up but not like this. Damnit Chris. If that's even your name."

"It doesn't matter."

"The worst part is that you were going to disappear. Without a word."

"I was going to die. That way you won't look for me." He smiled a concealing smile

"I can't let you do that. After what you did, it won't be that easy for you!"

"Why is that?"

"You didn't expect your friend telling me where you would be. Now I'll stop you."

Chris nodded his head," Hmm! You mean Patrick! The rugged looking guy with the beautiful daughter? I told him, I told him to tell you to meet me here."

"You couldn't have. You didn't know I would go to your apartment."

" True. While you were there, he called me. He told me you were there."

"So why? Why would you want me here if you were to disappear?"

She began moving closer. Tears had stopped flowing down her cheeks. Anger and spite began rushing through her veins. Sirens filled the air.

"To tie up loose ends!"

"Is that what I am now, huh? A loose end?" She smiled then pulled out a gun. She pointed it at Chris and took a step forward.

Chris took a step back.

"Didn't see that coming huh? You aren't going anywhere. "

"You're not well Shea, you need help!"

"Don't you say that to me. You ruined me!" She was shouting, all emotional. Chris truth echoed in Chris's head.

"You are right, so let me help you. To be honest, I saw this coming. I hoped actually. So I planned ahead." Chris took some steps back. There was twenty metres between them.

"No stop! No!" She took a step forward and fired at Chris twice on the chest. Chris went down immediately. Just as she tried to take a step closer, she heard.

"Police. Stop and put the gun down. She turned her head around to see two officers, pointing their guns at her. One male, the other female. She looked back at Chris who was motionless on the ground.

Shea put the gun down and got to her knees. She rested her head against the ground while her hand were at the back of her head. One officer, the woman, cuffed her while the other picked up the gun.

While was being helped to her feet she glanced at where Chris was. She couldn't believe it. He was gone! She began craning her head left and right but she couldn't see any sign of him.

"He was there. Where did he go? Where did he go?" Shea began jumping around, struggling with the officer.

"Who is she talking about? There's no one else here." Asked the man

While trying to get hold her down,"She must've fired her gun at someone. Let's take her in."

Chris watched from a distance. Under his hoodie was a bullet proof vest. He was grateful Patrick had informed him of Shea's unexpected visit. It gave him the time to figure out a plan.

He knew there was enough proof that Shea killed Mathew. It was certain that she would go to jail. He was responsible for her mental state, though. So he had orchestrated everything to make her look crazy. So that she would get the psychiatric help she needed.

Now, he needed to go find his brother!

Three Months Later

He leaned against the cold wall. He took in the dust filled air. It had been a quiet three months. Quite uneventful. He had refused visits from Olivia, though. Other than that he didn't have a single visitor during that time.

Jack grew to be bitter. Chris had not visited him at all. It was his fault he was looking at thirty years imprisonment. If only he hadn't showed up at his graduation. If only he had not fallen for his words. He would probably be somewhere else. Probably cooking lunch for his wife. Who knows!

"405, you have a visitor!" Said the prison guard with distaste in his mouth.

Jack was taken to a secluded room. He wasn't sure if that was the protocol. At the back of his mind he felt like a goat being led to slaughter. He lacked the energy to fight. Not physically but mentally. He was surprised when he got a glimpse of his guest. It was like looking into a mirror. The prison guard then disappeared.

"Brother!" Jack embraced his brother. It felt good not to be forgotten. They sat next to each other against a wall.

"I thought you would never come!" Jack managed to say

"I couldn't just come empty handed. I had to come bearing gifts. " Said Chris

"What gifts are those?"

"The target on you and your comrades has been lifted. They are safe!"

"Good."

"Also, I came to apologize. I should never have brought you into this kind of life. You had your own life back then. I was desperate to have my brother on my side that I didn't realize what you were giving up."

"You shouldn't apologize. Thanks to you I got to travel a lot. I also got to meet Rachel and got to know her."

"You shouldn't be here. We were supposed to do our last mission then disappear together. That has always been your motivation all this time. You deserve better."

"It shouldn't worry you! It's probably better this way."

"It's my job to worry. It's also my job to be my brother's keeper. Which brings me to the gift I was talking about! "

Chris couldn't hide a smile. Jack didn't know what he was talking about. Chris hugged Jack. The kind of hug that said goodbye.

Kamiti Prison. Later

Chris lay on the top bed reading a book. He was actually staring at the pages while he was deep in thought. He thought of Jack. He had finally done it right with him. All he wanted was Jack to be happy, even if it meant they won't be together.

He thought of their plans to disappear and live a low key life somewhere nice. That was Jack's plan. Not his. To be honest, he was happy with his life. He wasn't ready to leave it.

He didn't want to settle down or have a family, like his brother. He wanted the danger, the thrill, the rush of adrenaline. He was happy with how things turned out though.

Mathew's Funeral. One Week Later

There weren't a lot of people there. Roughly twenty at most. They had their ominous black umbrellas but it showed no signs of raining.

Mandy was there with David. Mandy decided to take a break from dating. David didn't mind though, he had promised to be there to catch her when she was ready. Mandy was ok with that.

She would really miss Mathew. She just hoped it had ended better between them. She had also been to another funeral recently. Her uncle's. He couldn't believe that the guy was Chris. Though he was arrested as Chris Dhati, she was still sceptical. She didn't think much of it though. She just chose to move on.

Olivia had a huge pair of sunglasses. She a didn't want anyone to see that she had been crying. Mathew's demise, coupled with the fact that it was Shea, her best friend who killed him. She had grown fond of Mathew in the time they spent investigating Chris. Chris who was arrested in Happy Harbour for killing a man. Nothing made sense to her.

She had been cut off by her parents after quiting her job has a lawyer to pursue journalism. They don't answer her calls or messages. They probably need time.

Shea had was in a mental institution. She was declared mentally unfit after she was charged with the murder of Mathew. Unlike the first time she was in therapy, this time Olivia wasn't going to leave her side.

Avery had made it, from Kamiti County. She needed to pay off her respects to her friend. Mandy had convinced her to stay after the funeral. She needn't be alone.

From a far, two men watched the proceedings. They were close enough to see clearly yet far enough not to be noticed.

"So you knew you were going to be let out when you switched with your brother?" asked Patrick

"No. I mean I knew I was going to burst out but I didn't know it would be so soon!" Said Chris. They turned and made their way to the car

"Well, the Don sure has a soft spot for you."

"Thanks to me Golden Eagle Bank controls TechSolutions LTD. I'd say, I'm MVP this year."

"Yeah, yeah. So what about your brother?"

Five Years Ago

Chris had returned home from a briefing. Jack was seated in the living room. Before him was his laptop. He could tell something was not right with him.

"Is something wrong?" Jack looked at his twin, he couldn't speak."Is there a problem with Rachel?"

"No. Everything is going well with her." He paused a bit before blasting," Why are we doing this exactly?"

"What do you mean?"

"I mean why are we doing this? Why did I have give up my life. "

Chris was confused," You know why. And besides, you didn't give up your life. When we are done you can go back!"

"I can't!" He muttered under his breath

"Why? You didn't die. Your identity was just sealed. You just think of a great story and they'll accept you back!"

"I can't. Look."

He turned his laptop to face Chris. Chris came closer to see a photo. It was a picture of a bride and groom.

"Is that Julie?" Chris asked in exasperation. He felt sympathetic to his brother.

"She's married. Happily. And the others, they have all moved on. "

"They are still your friends! "

"Don't you get it. Once all this is over, I have nothing to go back to. I don't have anyone else."

Chris didn't speak. Jack was hurting. There was nothing he could say that could help him.

Present Day

"He's where he needs to be." Said Chris with satisfaction.

"Can't believe the Don just let Gemini disband like that. Let Callisto go like that."

"As I said I'm MVP. It won't matter anyway. The first part is already completed, Gemini won't be needed going forward."

"Sure but still. You think you'll ever see your brother again?"

"When the time is right!"

Patrick and Chris got into the sleek black Mercedes Benz. Chris reved up the car and they were off, driving into the horizon.
