As Sylvie explained the complex social structure of the kingdom, Haruto reflected on the nature of power. This was a place where social status and wealth might not buy influence directly because everyone was ostensibly on an equal playing field. Yet, Haruto sensed a naiveté in Sylvie's view. He remembered a saying from his world: "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." It seemed improbable that an organization like the Warlords, which wielded such power, wouldn't harbor internal discord and factions. Gram's reaction at the gate was a testament to that. People like Gram, with their inflated egos, would struggle to accept equality with commoners. Sylvie might not see this, or perhaps she chose to overlook it, trusting in the system's ideal rather than its reality.
Sylvie noticed Kage's thoughtful expression and assumed he was overwhelmed by the complexity. "The guilds are divided into five major ones, with numerous smaller factions. Each guild can have as many members as they want. Advancement in rank is achieved through duels against higher-ranked members. Only the top two ranks in each guild, excluding the guild master, can challenge a Vanguard to become the tenth-ranked member."
She continued, "Guild masters are second only to the Vanguard in terms of strength. But for a master to challenge for a Vanguard spot, they must resign their post, defeat the top-ranked member of their guild, and then the tenth-ranked Vanguard. It's a grueling process that few undertake. Only Gram's brother has tried it."
"I'll put it simply: while guild ranks change frequently, the Vanguard positions have been stable for the last 15-20 years, except for the tenth spot. They are, quite literally, monsters in terms of strength."
Sylvie elaborated on the Vanguards' unique dueling conditions. "Vanguard duels can only occur with the King present, and they have to be held at a special location because of the potential for massive destruction. So, most don't bother challenging each other. The effort's too great, and the top four spots are particularly stable. Just imagine the power required to advance in such a system..." Haruto could see Sylvie drifting into thought again, marveling at the strength her sister and other Vanguards must possess.
"Is that why there are so many vendors here?" Haruto inquired, gesturing towards the bustling stands.
Sylvie, who had been admiring an item at a vendor's stand, nodded. "Exactly! Aspirants buy gear to enhance their chances during the Initiation. All items up to 'Unique' grade are permitted. Unfortunately, many novices purchase powerful items in hopes of defeating higher-ranked members if they qualify, which often doesn't end well. Successful Warlords gain access to superior kingdom shops. However, if a Warlord misuses an item causing harm or destruction, they risk demotion or even losing their title. Warlords are valued for their power, but it's power meant to protect everyone from the dangers beyond these walls."
Haruto glanced towards the walls, recalling the formidable griffin he had encountered. The kingdom was clearly safeguarded by these warriors from creatures like that and potentially worse. Lost in thought, he didn't notice the streets beginning to clear until Sylvie's sudden exclamation brought him back.
"OHhhhhh, it's about to happen!!!" Haruto snapped out of his reverie and looked around, realizing the streets were now empty. Loud trumpets sounded a regal tone, heralding an important event. Sylvie squealed with excitement.
"The Vanguard are arriving!!!!"
As the crowd's excitement built, Haruto felt a mix of anticipation and anxiety about witnessing the arrival of these legendary warriors, his mind racing with what their presence could mean for the Initiation.
