Evie was seated on the bed, staring at the wide-opened window beside her, watching as people passed by.
Then she sighed and got up, the bed made a desperate creaking noise and she sighed again.
She took the shawl that lay on the bed and hung it over her shoulders.
Walking down the stairs was also a risk as the stairs were not in good shape.
She saw her younger sister seated on the sofa while she knitted.
Her big eyes opened but did not see anything.
Yet she knew every nook and cranny of the house.
She sighed again and took the shopping bag and walked to the door.
"Evie?" Sophia called.
"Yes," she replied.
"Where are you going?" Sophia asked.
"I'm going to buy some foodstuffs for dinner," Evie said and opened the door.
"I wanna go with you," Sophia said reaching out for crutches.
"But Junior would be back soon," Evie said checking her wristwatch.
"I've made some tea for him and besides the house is boring," Sophia said.
Evie then accepted and helped Sophia with her crutches.
She walked slowly beside Sophia till they got outside and headed to Mrs. Olivias' shop.
Instead, she met his son, Joseph, stocking oranges into a box.
What captured Evie's attention was the orange, it was damn orange and looked juicy.
"Uhmm how much is for one of that?" she asked.
"That'll be fifty cents," he said.
"Can you please give us two for sixty cents," Sophia begged.
Evie felt so embarrassed.
For three years now they begged for food and money.
"How about seventy," he said.
Sophia's expression dropped as she knew Evie would never waste much money.
"I'll take it," Evie said.
Joseph grinned before handing out two oranges to Evie, who in return gave him loose changes.
As they were about to walk away, they heard Mrs. Olivia scold Joseph.
"You didn't have to cut off the price for the daughters of a slut," she said.
Evie felt her eyes watery and quickly blinked them away.
"What was that?" she asked.
"Nothing," Evie said.
"I may be blind but I'm not deaf," Sophia said a little hurt.
"I'm sorry, I just got a little emotional," Evie said and sniffed.
Sophia held her arm and patted it gently.
As they were going they saw children running about, then everywhere became crowded.
They sighted soldiers moving with a vehicle.
"Is it the new mayor?" someone asked.
"It should be," another said.
Evie and Sophia struggled to make out what was happening.
They gave up and went home.
Junior was seated right beside his pet dog, Buddy.
"How was school today?" Evie asked.
"Horrible," he muttered.
"What happened?" Evie asked seating beside him.
"Jake and Sam made fun of me in class," he said.
"Don't you worry bro, I'm gonna spank them hard on their asses," she said.
"But you'll lose your job," Junior said widening his eyes.
"That wouldn't stop me from teaching those two a lesson," she said.
"Rather I'm gonna get another job," she said.
"But who's gonna hire you?" he asked.
Evie felt a sting in her heart.
Yeah, he was right, who's gonna hire Evie Wiggs?!
"Soon, everything is gonna be okay," she said patting his brown hair.
Maybe getting married would be the best option.
She could get married to Mr. Luke. He's in his late sixties and isn't so bad.
Besides, he has been pestering her and all she needs is money.
Sophia brought tea and a cookie for Junior.
Despite their living condition, they wanted the best for him.
