Chapter 3 - Chapter 3

Evie had just arrived from her house service from where she worked and she was exhausted.

After eating and washing up, she got downstairs.

There was a little knock on the old door and she got up to answer it.

Looking through the peephole, she saw a guard standing outside.

She then opened it.

"The duke of Flummingtin is requesting for you to come to a dinner party tonight," he said and handed me an envelope.

I reluctantly took it and scanned it before nodding.

Then I shut the door close and brought out the paper in the envelope.

It read thus: Miss Evie Wiggs, you've been invited to the dinner party tonight.

Host of the party: Lord Dylan.

There's no way she was gonna meet Dylan.

And she's doing all this to get married to the duke.

Yeah, he's the man that's been asking her.

She sighed as she dropped the paper and its envelope on the table and then went upstairs.

She went through her wardrobe in search of a perfect dress.

At last, she picked out a glittery blue cocktail gown her mother had bought for her years ago.

It was a little tight on her but that's all she has got.

She then went through her mother's jewelry box.

The pieces of jewelry were worth nearly a thousand dollars each.

But each time Sophia brought up the topic of selling them, Evie declined, stating that it was her mother's possession and she wouldn't sell it for any amount at all.

She carefully poured them on the bed and began trying them out.

She finally picked the golden chain with blue crystal as its pendant and a diamond earring, with a silver wristwatch.

Then she took one of her mother's shoes and wore it.

She smiled as she looked at herself in the broken mirror.

She had her mother's silver eyes and brown hair just like Junior's own.

She let her long brown hair pinned behind her hair and she applied lipstick.

She had to look attractive to the duke if she wanted to get married to him.

Sophia and Junior who had gone to the park got back home and met Evie.

"I'm going to a dinner party I'll be back before eight," Evie said.

"I wish I could see you, I bet you look dazzling," Sophia said grinning.

Evie knew her grin, the type with a hint of sadness.

She hugged her sister and blinked back the tears that were building up.

"Take care," Evie said.

She got out and waited patiently for the duke to arrive.

She tapped her feet on the earth as she stared at the wristwatch.

Is she gonna wait till eternity?

Just then the duke's horse carriage pulled up in front of her house.

She managed to smile to impress the duke.

She got in with the help of the guard and met the duke grinning lustfully at her.

"Darling, you're looking gorgeous tonight," he said and she muttered a "Thank you."

The duke placed his wrinkled hand on her lap and she shivered a bit but she covered it up with a smile.

She wondered how she'd survive when she gets married because she'll have to bear kids.

Then the horse carriage stopped and she peeped out to see a huge building in front of her.

The duke took her hand and they got out together.

Evie stared at his large, protruding, rotund stomach.

It disgusted her so much by standing beside a man who had three wives already.

He then wrapped his hand around her waist and drew her to himself as soon as they got in.
