I don't have to wait for more than a few minutes before it seems like everyone have finished selecting their first magic spell as well and we decide to head back to the adventurer's guild.
On the way out, Varris speaks up, "So, what all did you guys get? I took Stone Defense lvl.1. It lets my skin harden for a period of time. Since my intelligence and charisma aren't that high though its only for a short period."
"I took Haste lvl.1. It lets me move quicker for a period of time." Calliope chimes in.
"I have Firebolt lvl.1. I think its self explanatory" Elys says.
As Elys finishes talking, everyone looks at me expectantly, since its the first magic that a summoned hero has that they know of, I'm sure they're excited. "I have Calm lvl.1 It make allows me to calm people or creature's emotional state. The strength of the effect is controlled by intelligence, and the duration by charisma." I say.
"That's wild!" Varris exclaims, "Try it on me now. I'm super excited right now about leveling up and seeing it."
I mentally select to cast Emotion Control on him, and mentally set the emotion to calm, and then cast it on him. His expression slowly changes from excitement to a more neutral one over the course of a few seconds.
"That's very interesting. It really just feels like I calmed down. This could be useful if any of us are feeling anxious, or even on enemies maybe." Varris says in an even tone.
"That's crazy. Summoned heroes magic really is something!" Calliope exclaims, "I was excited to see what you got, and this is pretty neat. Its really useful as support magic beyond just the novelty of it."
"I don't know if I'd say its that amazing. I'm sure some of the other heroes have more amazing magic." I reply.
"Even if they do, its still amazing." Elys says.
"Why don't we start heading back." I suggest.
Everyone nods in agreement, and we continue back. After about a minute, Varris mentions that he feels like the effect of the spell is wearing off.
When we make it back to the guild, we turn in the remainder of giant rat tails, and the receptionist pulls out a few silver coins for us, and tells us its payment.
"I'm a little confused, the royal family is already paying my expenses, am I getting paid in addition to that?" I say.
"Yes, the royal family is paying your expenses, but they're fairly generous, I'm sure the princess mentioned that they understand that the whole summoning is fairly one sided, and they don't expect you to be slaves. So you're party will be rewarded normal rewards in addition to your expenses being paid." She responds.
"They have my thanks then." I say.
"If you four could wait here for a few minutes, Garm wanted to meet with each party after they completed their first task." The receptionist says, and heads upstairs.
I lean over to Elys and ask, "Later, could you explain how the currency here works? I have no clue what the value of a silver coin is, or what other currencies there are."
"Sure, we can talk about it later." Elys replies.
We wait around for a couple of minutes, when the receptionist returns down the stairs with Garm in tow.
"So you all finished your first task!" Garm says in a light mood. "Get anything good?" He asks knowingly.
"Yeah, we all levelled up to level 3, and got access to our first magics." Varris replies excitedly.
"I see, I see. I'll let you in on a little secret, you might've figured it out already, but those tasks were specifically designed to get you exactly to level 3. I've been doing this for a while, and I've got it down pretty well. How's the summoned hero's magic, anything good?" Garm rattles off.
"Yeah, his magic's real neat, its called Calm, and it basically sets whatever he casts it on to be calm." Calliope says, "We tried it out on Varris, since he volunteered and was super excited, and it was amazing, he calmed right down, and had a level head."
"That is interesting!" Garm says, and slaps me on the back, "I'll pick out a new task for your party tomorrow, I'll look if there is anything that matches your new magics, so what did the rest of you get?"
"I got Stone Defense, Calliope got Haste, and Elys got Firebolt." Varris says.
"Good. Good. Meet up here again in the morning tomorrow, and I'll get you your new task." Garm says, and heads back upstairs.
"Well, I think I'm going to clean off, then head home and relax for the rest of the afternoon." Varris says, "Today was exciting, but who knows how long our next task might take, so I think its important to relax while you can."
"Varris makes a good point." Calliope says and heads out with him.
"Those two get well, as always." Elys sighs.
"Well, it makes sense, given they grew up together." I reply, "Although he does make a good point. Why don't we meet back here a little early for dinner, and we can discuss currency then before we eat, outside of that, I think I'm going to just relax this afternoon."
"Alright, so around a half hour before we normally eat?" Elys asks.
"Sounds good." I reply, and head to clean up before going to my room.
Once I get back to my room, I let out a sigh of relief. No one seems to have found my magic suspicious. I was worried, last thing I want is to either be drafted to fight the Demon Lord, or be sent to prison for having powers too dangerous or something like that. I start idly flipping my one silver coin that was my share of my payment while thinking about situations where I might be able to use my magic to a further extent without being noticed in combat. For instance, I could make something feel panic at an opportune moment, and no one might notice.
After a few hours, its time to head down to talk about currency with Elys. As I head down, I spot her already sitting at a table.
"Sorry, did you wait long?" I ask.
"No, I only got here a couple minutes ago." Elys replies.
"Ok, so where do we start?" I say.
"Alright, well, lets start with the coin you have now. These silver coins are Godren Silver Pieces. One silver piece can get you about a loaf of bread, give or take. There are 6 other coins to know about. All the coins I'll explain today are all Godren's coins, other countries might have their own currencies, but I'm not sure about what they use." Elys explains slightly apologetically.
"That's ok, just what you know is fine." I say.
"Alright, well, the next coin to know about are Large Silver Pieces, they're the equivalent of 10 small silver pieces, they're about twice as big. There are also small and big Copper and Gold Pieces. It takes 10 Small Copper to make a Large Copper, and 10 Large Copper to make a Small Silver. It then takes 100 Large Silver to make a Small Gold Piece, and 10 Small Gold makes a Large Gold. The last piece that I've heard of is the Platinum Piece. A Platinum Piece, from what I understand is worth 100 Large Gold Pieces, and is only used during large transactions of money. For an idea of what some of the coins might be useful for, Copper Pieces are generally change exchanged as intermediate value in addition to Silver Pieces, and Gold Pieces are generally used for savings, a Small Gold Piece would feed a poor peasant for a year." Elys explains.
"Thanks, that's useful." I respond, "Why don't we go get dinner now."
We eat dinner while discussing various events from the day, afterwards we each head to bed and sleep readily takes me again tonight.
