Chapter 17 - Ambush

--Gremory Point of View--

There was blood all over the road, so it was easy to pick the direction of the camp.

Goblins are not known for their intelligence, so the tracks were clear as day.

Danton started to analyze the blood on the ground.

"It must have been no more than a few hours ago, whoever was attacked here, has been dragged back to their camp" Danton spoke while pointing northwest.

"If we hurry maybe we can save them" Claire spoke worriedly.

'Would not be too bad if they are dead already, humans are quite delicious... What the hell am I thinking? Of course it would be bad, we have to hurry!'

"We better keep going, everyone stays alert" Danton spoke.

"Wait, and what about our formations?" I asked.

"Oh, we just stay together and try not to die" Danton replied while everyone stared at me.

"Do you have the desire to die?" I asked surprised by the answer.

"Rudo uses a heavy two-handed hammer, so he has no mobility, I usually use this to attack the flanks and Claire keeps helping us from a distance"

"So Rudo is the tank, Claire the archer and you and I are going to be the rogues of the team for now then. Rudo, since your armor is not good for your function I recommend you to focus on evasion instead of attack while keeping most of the Agro in yourself, once the fight began Danton take the left flank and I will take the right while Claire focuses on helping those in difficulty during battle"

"Yes, that's good for me. A little planning doesn't hurt Danton" Rudo spoke sarcastically to Danton.

"That's fine for me, let's go" Both Danton and Claire say to me.

The bloodstains disappeared quickly from the moment we entered the forest on the side of the road, but we continued following the same direction for about 5 miles until we started to hear a lot of noise from the proximity.

"They must be close, keep your head down guys" Danton spoke whispering.

We peek through the trees until we find a flat surface region with a much larger camp than expected.

There were more than 2 hundred goblins, some humans in a cage and others being prepared as food at a big fire in the middle of the camp, they didn't even bother to kill before roasting people, the screams were agonizing.

Or at least it was for them, but the only thing I could see was much more dark energy than I could ask for.

"We can't do this guy, we probably should leave" Claire spoke worried.

"She is probably right, this is too much for us. If we get back to the city with the contract and explain that the camp was bigger than expected maybe they'll take the contract back without charging a fee for failure" Danton spoke as he turned to go back the same way we came.

"Maybe we have a chance to pull this out" I said pointing to the humans in the cages.

"What do you mean by that?" Danton asked.

"There is no more than a dozen humans for more than two hundred goblins, they are feasting now, but soon they will have to hunt again. A group this big wouldn't be able to hunt without drawing attention from afar, so we might have a chance if we wait here and kill them while they are divided."

"You are talking about sitting here and watch the people in the cages die?" Claire spoke angrily.

"They are going to die anyway, the only difference is that we can prevent it from happening again!" I replied without taking my eyes off the camp.

"He is right, let's wait here for an opportunity" Rudo spoke while holding Claire from punching me.

"Your call chief, let's do it then" Danton spoke while sitting on the ground.

After a while, the screams stopped until all the humans died at the stake, and we waited there for some hours until we got bored.

Rudo took some rations from a small backpack and started passing for everyone.

But in my turn I rejected.

"You need to eat boy if you don't eat you will have no use in battle"

"I will eat soon, but my food is kinda different from yours, look at the camp and tell me what you see" I replied.

"Goblins, a lot of them"

"That's my food"

"It is easy to forget you are a child with you scaring me like this, you could just say no again..."

"Sorry"

'It looks like this will take a while'

--Hours later--

When the night came a great commotion started in the camp. 3 groups of goblins began to enter the forest, one going southwest, one west, and the other one going north, but most of the goblins stayed at the camp.

"Wake up people, this is our time" I talked looking around, all three had already fallen asleep.

"What? Just more five minutes please" Claire spoke without whispering.

"Shhhhh! Let's keep our heads down and follow the southwest group, it's the closest one from us"

Everyone listening to this soon started to concentrate and followed me without saying a word.

We followed them for an entire hour until they were far enough, since it was completely dark and the goblins were the only point of light thanks to their torches, it was very easy to follow them.

"I think they are getting close to some road, it's now or never guys!" I whispered to everyone while picking up a stick from the floor.

"What are you doing with this stick" Danton asked.

"It's the only weapon I have..." I said while realizing what I can do now, just like with the short sword from before, I let the shadows flow to the stick in an attempt to mold them into a sword, but all I can do is make a crooked staff.

'This is good already"

"They are stopping, Claire try to hit the bigger goblins right there, Rudo stay here with her, once they start attacking you Claire will run away for the left and there will be Danton providing support, I will take left and maybe try to kill the bigger ones that approach Rudo from there. This should break their formation and it will be easier to kill them one by one" I spoke while pointing the direction in which everyone should go.

"What goblins there? I can't see them properly, only the ones holding the torches. How am I going to shoot them without seeing???" Claire asked confused.

'Shit, they can't see in the dark like me, this will be problematic'

"You also have night vision dude? Why don't you said it already?" Danton whispered.

'Why didn't I think in that before? It couldn't be better!'
