It had been one of the last good, untainted memories she'd had before Cam poisoned her mind. He'd brainwashed her into thinking the U.S. Government was responsible for him torturing her. He'd also tried to make her believe that Max had been the unfaithful traitor who had deserted her and left her in that awful cell.
Even in her darkest moments, Cam hadn't been able to reroute her wiring to persuade herself that Max had been the traitor to give her up. At her most desperate and weakest, she'd held on to the one sure belief that he would still be there and avenge her even if she quit.
Quit everything.
Like breathing.
The darkness and pain gathered around her heart and she felt herself being pulled back to that place again.
The dark, cold, rotting cell. The decaying, rancid smell of hopelessness and despair.
